Would you attend a peaceful protest if a convicted paedophile moved into your street?

I’ve never attended anything similar before and I’m in two minds about going. He was convicted (I’ve read the newspaper articles which show his photo) and has been released after serving half his sentence. I don’t know if he owns the property but he’s moved in with his wife who stood by him. There’s a peaceful protest being arranged. Would you go?

I obviously wouldn't want to live near a paedophile (hopefully no one would) but I don't suppose I have any more right to not have a paedophile living nearby than anyone else does, so in that sense intimidating him out of the area doesn't solve the problem, it just moves it elsewhere.

It's a horrible situation for neighbours.

Doingitaloneandproud · 11/11/2020 21:37

@Grenlei

Once someone has been convicted, sentenced by a judge and served that sentence, they are allowed to live in and be part of society.

You think sentences are too lenient? Ok, then the route is to campaign for legal reform, for an increase to the sentencing tariff. Not mob justice where 'punishment' is dispensed. It makes you no less of a criminal, and no better than them whether you actively participate in that punishment, or abet it/ turn a blind eye.

I agree with This.

I wouldn't be happy but no I wouldn't attend a protest. It doesn't mean I sympathise with him in any way.

janetmendoza · 11/11/2020 21:37

And NotTheToothFairy22 - they do have a right to live peacefully. Are you disputing that? Because in law they absolutely definitely do!

SisyphusDad · 11/11/2020 21:38

No.

BananaPop2020 · 11/11/2020 21:38

@NotTheToothFairy22 your comment about the person’s wife says it all. Who are you to decide whether she lives peacefully or not?

MrsJunglelow · 11/11/2020 21:38

No.
I can’t promise I wouldn’t leave dog shit on its doorstep though and spread the word it’s moved in In the hope the atmosphere would be sufficiently uncomfortable it would move on.

CoronaBollox · 11/11/2020 21:38

Yes.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 11/11/2020 21:40

I am just agog at paedo sympathizers saying they have a right to live peacefully.

Nobody is sympathising.

You aren't the only person in the world who hates paedophiles you know Hmm

MrsJunglelow · 11/11/2020 21:40

He has to live somewhere
In law perhaps.
No normal person would want it living anywhere near them.

Where else should he go?
Prison?
A noose?
Does anyone really care..

ItCouldBeBunnies · 11/11/2020 21:40

Maybe not a peaceful protest, no. I would be telling everyone who was living there though. Maybe someone would accidentally run the monster over with their car. Then reverse.

My cousin is in jail for raping an 8 year old girl. I hope he gets similar treatment when he is released.

00100001 · 11/11/2020 21:40

@NotTheToothFairy22

Whaaaaaaat? Nobody here would go to a protest if a paedo moved into their street?

I would. And it wouldn't have to be peaceful either. They can fuck off somewhere else.

Where should they fuck off to?

NIMBYism at it's finest

Grenlei · 11/11/2020 21:40

I appreciate the man living near the OP has been convicted rather than merely accused, but this case is a perfect example of what can happen when idiots decide to take the law info their own hands - a(n entirely innocent) disabled man set on fire and murdered Sad

PurpleFrames · 11/11/2020 21:42

Absolutely would attend a protest.

What's with the wife though? You must have really low self esteem to think a sex offender is a good catch. Or just an idiot deep in a pile of denial...

Surprising how common this is, a young man in my hometown got caught with indicent images and went all "it was an accident". His parents believed him, funded his legal fees and allow him to have access to kids in the family. wtf...

Figgygal · 11/11/2020 21:42

No it’s a passive aggressive road to nothing
He’s not going to move is he?

userxx · 11/11/2020 21:43

NIMBYism at it's finest

Yep.

ShipOfTheseus · 11/11/2020 21:43

No, I wouldn’t.

BananaPop2020 · 11/11/2020 21:43

@MrsJunglelow I have before lived opposite a convicted sex offender, and it made no difference whatsoever to my life. I can assure you I am perfectly normal.

How can you protest in a lockdown?

Nobody wants a paedophile living near them but unfortunately you probably have paedophile living near you.

It's scarily common.

Nicknacky · 11/11/2020 21:44

PurpleFrames Why attend though? What are you personally gaining from it apart from the desire to be involved?

These protects are causing people to be injured (and not the target of the protest).

NotTheToothFairy22 · 11/11/2020 21:45

@NotTheToothFairy22 your comment about the person’s wife says it all. Who are you to decide whether she lives peacefully or not?

I'm glad it does say it all. I've no tolerance for anyone who supports/sympathizes/condones/hides/dismisses the actions of a paedophile. A wife who supports and stays with a convicted rapist of a 5 year doesn't deserve peace either. The family of that 5 year old (and God knows how many others) don't get peace. The 5 year old doesn't get peace. Why should the rapist and his wife get peace?

mathanxiety · 11/11/2020 21:45

This once happened on a street where I lived. The pedophile moved in with a very elderly and heavy drinking neighbour whom he had met in a local bar. We tried to get the old man to throw out his lodger but he refused.

The guy used to put Barbie dolls in the front window and big, interesting looking glass balls in the front yard - things small children would stop to look at. He was creepy AF.

Neighbours called the police but nothing he was doing was illegal. We kept on calling every time some new, interesting toy or shiny object appeared.

Finally the police found an unlicenced home daycare operating within 500 feet of the house the pedophile lived in (he was restricted from going within 500 feet of any facility where children would reasonably be found, as part of his condition of release).

So they forced him out via court order. He had to be given 90 days notice and he took advantage of every single day. Moved out on day 90.

500 feet is nothing.

Nicknacky · 11/11/2020 21:46

isadorapolly Don’t talk such shite.

00100001 · 11/11/2020 21:47

@RosieLemonade

How can you protest in a lockdown?
Protest is allowed in lockdown.

Remember BLM etc? Protests were exempt
