Tescos shop

So I booked an online shop at the beginning of lockdown, it finally arrived yesterday evening. I was too tired and just put it away without checking anything, today I start going through the fresh food and with the exception of 2 packs of sausages everything fresh had today and tomorrow’s dates on it. I’ve had to throw almost everything away 😢

If you phone up customer services they'll probably refund you the cost of those items.

Clevs · 11/11/2020 20:23

Did you throw it away because it was all off? Or just go by the date on the packets? Food often lasts past the date stated, as long as it looked and smelt ok then there was no need to throw it away.

greyspottedgoose · 11/11/2020 20:23

Throwing almost everything away was obviously the rational thing to do....

FundamentallyFucked · 11/11/2020 20:23

This is absolutely not the point whatsoever.

Definitely call the customer services.

Clutterbugsmum · 11/11/2020 20:24

Why if you ordered fresh meat would you not put it away straight away, It's not Tesco fault you didn't.

The sausages were in date.

mindutopia · 11/11/2020 20:27

Definitely call and complain but no need to throw it away unless off. Freeze as much as you can and then just don’t eat if off.

That said, I’ve found Tesco has been particularly bad for this lately. Ordered sausages a few weeks ago, delivery slot was 7-8pm, sausages went off that day. When they were expecting I’d cook them that evening, I don’t know.

PiperPiper20 · 11/11/2020 20:27

You either put it in the freezer or note on the item when ordering that you want a long date.

FatGirlShrinking · 11/11/2020 20:28

Couldn't you have frozen it? I'd have called for a refund, if I absolutely couldn't get that I'd have frozen what could be frozen, and cooked anything else.

Once cooked it has another 3 days in the fridge.

LagneyandCasey · 11/11/2020 20:28

What food was it? Throwing food away is wasteful but Tesco should refund. Ocado would refund without quibble.

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2020 20:29

Just ring them, you should get a refund. But there was no need to throw any food away unless it was actually off, that's really wasteful.

Floralnomad · 11/11/2020 20:30

Do ring customer services but why would you just throw stuff away that’s madness . I shop online with Tesco and we rarely have an issue with dates on stuff but I don’t take much notice of them anyway , you can generally tell if something is ok to use .

FundamentallyFucked · 11/11/2020 20:32

Read it again ffs.

pistolknight · 11/11/2020 20:34

Was it actually off or did you just go by the dates? Why didn't you freeze it? It won't be off just because the date has passed Confused

gamerchick · 11/11/2020 20:35

I know it's not the point but I'm another one who doesnt know why you binned it. That's what freezers are for.

The sooner they do away with dates the better.

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2020 20:36

Best Before/Use By and Display Until are all just guidance. Obviously you want longer dates is possible but it was all in date when it arrived and they have to pick from what they have on the shelves at the time presumably?

murmurgam · 11/11/2020 20:39

I've always been asked if I want to accept things with short dates on. The one time I didn't I got a refund and put it all in the freezer.

In the time you've written this post you could have contacted them and got a refund.

emilyfrost · 11/11/2020 20:42

I’d have binned it too, but only after taking photos and ringing to complain.

Personal shoppers shouldn’t be picking today/tomorrow’s use by/best before dates for delivery orders; they’re told not to so if they’re being lazy their supervisors need to know.

00100001 · 11/11/2020 20:42

Why would you have to throw it away of the expiry was today or tomorrow?? Confused

00100001 · 11/11/2020 20:43

But why would you bin a pack of sausages today, that are best before tomorrow??? Confused

But why would you bin a pack of sausages today, that are best before tomorrow???

Perhaps I’m not planning on eating them today; perhaps I have a different plan for dinner.

And before anyone suggests it, I’m not in the habit of freezing stuff.

Sirzy · 11/11/2020 20:48

The invoice from Tesco states when items have short dates. Every driver I have had has pointed this out too.

But the dates are just a guide

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2020 20:48

Maybe those dates were all that was available? With everyone wanting a delivery in the middle of a pandemic maybe stock levels aren't as good as they could be? So it's those dates or nothing?
NoWordForFluffy · 11/11/2020 20:48

I don't get why you binned stuff either. Yes, they shouldn't send stuff with such short dates, but none of it is out of date.

00100001 · 11/11/2020 20:50

Well, you could... shockingly ... move the sausage dinner from Saturday to...tomorrow???

Or fucking freeze them. Just because you're not in the habit, doesn't mean you can't do that...

Confused
