Tescos shop

So I booked an online shop at the beginning of lockdown, it finally arrived yesterday evening. I was too tired and just put it away without checking anything, today I start going through the fresh food and with the exception of 2 packs of sausages everything fresh had today and tomorrow’s dates on it. I’ve had to throw almost everything away 😢

@emilyfrost

But why would you bin a pack of sausages today, that are best before tomorrow???

Perhaps I’m not planning on eating them today; perhaps I have a different plan for dinner.

And before anyone suggests it, I’m not in the habit of freezing stuff.

Brilliant. Only on mumsnet Grin
IHaveBrilloHair · 11/11/2020 21:11

I'm really fancying sausages now.

IloveJudgeJudy · 11/11/2020 21:12

Some items from Tesco now don't have dates on them such as fresh fruit in order to try and stop people throwing away so much edible food.

I'm another poster that doesn't understand why you had to throw everything away Confused

I am planning a sausage casserole for tomorrow night's dinner off the back of this thread. Grin
emilyfrost · 11/11/2020 21:15

@00100001

Well, you could... shockingly ... move the sausage dinner from Saturday to...tomorrow???

Or fucking freeze them. Just because you're not in the habit, doesn't mean you can't do that...

Confused

Because I don’t want to freeze them. It’s my money, I paid for them, I’ll do what I like with them.

But in this case I would get a refund on the short shelf life items so I wouldn’t lose out financially anyway 🤷‍♀️

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2020 21:17

I don't see the issue with the freezing. Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 11/11/2020 21:19

Yeah. What's the problem with freezing things? We love a bit of freezing in this house (we can't eat all of my allotment produce at once, for one thing!).

Kolo · 11/11/2020 21:19

My Tesco is terrible for this. It's not consistently identified on the receipt and so the driver can't warn me most of the time. They will refund those items if you call up, but I've told them that's not the solution I want. I want my food to have the shelf life they note on the website!

This last week was much worse than normal, guessing there's been a bit of extra demand with the lockdown.

AliceMcK · 11/11/2020 21:19

@LagneyandCasey

What food was it? Throwing food away is wasteful but Tesco should refund. Ocado would refund without quibble.
Deli chicken, fresh chicken pizza, duck in sauce, Thai chicken meals, deli ham, chicken thighs, steak (that went in the freezer) & pork mince.

They have refunded, it’s just frustrating, the point of the online shop was so I’m not going out shopping as I take immune suppressants trying to avoid going out at all unless I really need to.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 11/11/2020 21:20

Tesco is the absolute pits for sell and used by dates and their fresh fruit & veg are rank

Osquito · 11/11/2020 21:21

Haven’t rtft but:

That’s unacceptable. Even if you do freeze stuff (a whole weekly shop though?) they should not be delivering that to you. Hope you have contacted them about it.

Morgan12 · 11/11/2020 21:23

Most of that could have went in the freezer?

RuudGullitOnAShed · 11/11/2020 21:25

Genuine question OP - if you are not in the habit of freezing things how come there was only room for one pack of meat in your freezer?

Pipandmum · 11/11/2020 21:30

I just picked up a shop and was told (as I always am if delivered too) that the smoked salmon had a use by date two days away. I said 'fine and it will last well beyond that date anyway'.
The driver should have pointed it out to you, and you should have checked the dates too (I always stack things in the fridge by sell by dates).
Today we had potato slices six days beyond their best before date - not meat or sausages I grant you, but things can be fine well after the date stamped on them.

MiniMum97 · 11/11/2020 22:08

That's not great and you were right to request a refund but you really didn't need to throw it away. If you had no room in your freezer you could have cooked it.

Abs you really don't need to avoid food away that's 2 days within it's use by date. Even if you have gut issues. Supermarkets always leave some contingency and you are extremely unlikely to get food poisoning from food within its use by date.

BackforGood · 11/11/2020 22:42

I have really bad gastro problems so I usually won’t eat anything unless it’s a good 48 hours outside its use by date.

You can hardly blame the (minimum wage) Tesco picker for not having some sort of extra sensory perception to know that you make such weird decisions. Hmm

Yes, when I do my shopping, I make sure the dates are spread so there are a couple of meals ready for a week's time. From this thread, I've learned that Tesco will - and you say have - refund(ed) the food, but you are being so wasteful to put the food in the bin. So many other ways you could have used them up / frozen / offered to friends / offered to local food projects.

Rememberallball · 12/11/2020 01:54

I’ve had this argument with both Morrison’s about the meat in their online delivery food boxes and Asda about home delivery.

During last lockdown we were doing a fortnightly supermarket delivery shop and, in between, would order a Morrison’s ‘Best of British’ food box. The food box contains 8 packs of meat, some dairy products and some veggies. The number of times we had damaged veggies (from being put under heavy stuff or due to the delivery company not taking care of the boxes in transit - first couple of times I complained they refunded part of the cost of items but then said they accept 3 days as being fine for meat products to expire and refused to do anything about the damaged products so we stopped using them for a while. Have used them again recently and quality was much improved but still fairly short dates so will now only use them in a dire emergency!!

Asda apparently only consider items as short dated if it’s expiry is the day of delivery or the day after but, if it is, they will give you a refund or you can return the items to the driver (but that’s no good if the delivery driver is in a hurry to leave).

At least with Sainsbury’s they tell you by email in advance of delivery if any fresh foods have short dates so you can decide whether to keep the item or return it.

I think OP hasn't got freezer fear-that was another poster.

Grin You need to get into the freezer habit-they're great. Very useful.
MadisonAvenue · 12/11/2020 09:34

The Tesco that supplies my home delivery has been awful for sending short dated items over the last few months.

I had quite an amount refunded from yesterday’s delivery.
Three packs of mince which the website states should have 4+ days before the use by date are all out of date today.
Two packs of fish which should’ve had 3+ days had a same day use by date!
Deli rolls which should have a best before of 3+ days are dated today.
Add to that a loaf which was squashed almost flat below some bags of potatoes and carrots and a cabbage!

The only thing which the delivery note flagged up as having a short date was an iceberg lettuce which was dated the 13th. There was no mention at all of the other items.

I don’t have much freezer space and already had some chicken defrosting for last night’s dinner to free up some space in there so we’ll have cottage pie tonight, one of the packs of mince has gone in the freezer but I’ve given the other and the fish to my parents as they have room.

Sparklingbrook · 12/11/2020 09:42

While I totally get how frustrating and annoying it is to get short dated stuff etc I think with the massive increase in everyone wanting delivery (isolating/lockdown etc) the supermarkets are doing what they can to get groceries to people. Some people can't even get a delivery slot at all and are relying on the kindness of neighbours. So while it's not ideal at least the OP had a delivery.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 12/11/2020 09:42

I'm relatively speechless well not really takes a lot to shut me up

OP whilst i sympathise with your gastro issue can i just check you aren't saying you won't eat anything that doesn't have 48 hours left on the use by date? How on earth does that impact?

I thought we all pretty much knew the use bus have a little but of give in them (producers will sensibly have a little leeway to prevent lawsuits ). Even so surely if it looked right and smelled right you would use common sense.

I do sympathise with lack of freezer space though so absolutely I would ring them , we just bought another freezer which I know is not always an option but it frustrated me that we had a tiny one.

Not in the habit of freezing ? Wait what? So you would throw actual food away (pp not you op) err because you aren't in the habit?

That might be the most bizarre view I've ever heard
Get in the habit ? I open the freezer , put food in. Done.

Didn't realise it was a habit Confused

Sparklingbrook · 12/11/2020 09:44

If there was ever a time to get into the habit of freezing food then during a pandemic would be it.

AriesTheRam · 12/11/2020 09:47

I'm surprised they refunded without seeing or collecting the old stuff.I had this with asda and they wanted to collect the short dated stuff before refund.
