So a bit of background. I'm 37 weeks pregnant. Huge and uncomfortable. Trying to renovate/move house in the next 3 weeks before baby arrives. In between cars so have rented a little run around for a week.
Rushing today to meet the plumber at said new house as OH was running late at work, very carefully maneuvered the new driveway..... and royally hit the gate post Confused in the rental car, which doesn't have full insurance (I'm not in the UK it's not standard here before anyone calls me stupid) then I panicked and couldn't figure out how to reverse or go forward without bashing it more... so I did the only logical thing and got out, left the car half out the driveway and snottily cried to the plumber until he took pity and moved the car for me Blush it's dented both doors badly and full of scratches.

Please please someone tell me your stupid moments especially while pregnant so I can feel better!

Currently trying to muster the courage to call the rental company and tell them, also trying to swallow the fact that I've just run up a rather large excess bill into the thousands Sad

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

I crashed into my own gate post twice when not pregnant. DH likes to tease me about it. And the time I drive into the welfare officers car.

However, I have ammunition in return now. Last year... He ran over the microwave.

Excellent.... so glad it's not just me Grin

How on earth did he run over the microwave?!

What brand is it? The manufacturers garage would get it looking pristine again, but if there's not one near you, it might be more trouble than it's worth.

Just watch out the car rental company don't try and charge you for extra repairs you didn't cause. That's what happened yo us in France with Europcar. They tried to charge us an extortionate amount for extra repairs (e.g. on wipers and mirrors) that had nothing to do with the small paintwork scratch! I remember seeing on the news a couple of years later that they were in trouble with trading standards for fraudulent repairs claims though, so maybe all the rental car companies are being better behaved now!

It's a Toyota.

Oh god, we've read and re-read the terms and conditions and it looks like there's a maximum excess that they can't charge over?! But now I'm doubting that Confused not what I need to be stressing about with baby almost here!

33+6 pregnant with twins and had been for routine weekly scan in the morning. Had to drive as, while only 30 minutes away by car, the hospital is 1 1/2 hours away by public transport and DH doesn’t drive.

At appointment consultant decided it was time for me to have c section and plans to admit me from clinic. As car is in hospital car park and, once I’ve had surgery there’s no way to get it home for 6 weeks, we negotiated with her that I’d drive home and immediately return by taxi. She also only allowed this plan of action if I called to book the taxi before leaving the scan appointment!! This is duly done and we drive home to find taxi waiting outside our house (bonus as I managed to persuade him to move so car was parked directly outside the house rather than 1/2 way down the road).

Grab hospital bags and jump in taxi for journey back to hospital. About 2/3 of way there I go to have a sip of my drink to realise my bottle of squash is sat on the table at home - next to my maternity notes 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Cue having to ask taxi driver to turn around and take us back to get them as there was no way I could turn up to hospital without my notes. Taxi fare of £25 was prepaid and, very nice driver, agreed to charge £10 extra for the additional journey instead of the probable £25-30 that it should have cost!!

Have also reversed car into a lamppost in a street in daylight - and managed to crack bumper and dent boot of car in 2 places 🤬 never did fix car as it functioned perfectly well despite the dent and crack!!

ArialAnna · 12/11/2020 08:00

Oh I didn't mean to stress you out. Don't worry, I'm sure if you've hired in the UK it'll be more reputable as they say in the ts and cs.

ArialAnna · 12/11/2020 08:01
  • do as they say
ArialAnna · 12/11/2020 08:16

Also, by 'excess', do you mean you paid for the extra insurance when hiring the car? If you have that you'll be fine. (We never take the extra insurance because it seems quite pricey for the risk level, tho we probably should given our track record!!)

I remembered another one when I was pregnant, probably around 25 weeks as I had a little bump. We were in Spain to attend a wedding and me and husband were chilling in the very small hotel room. I was going to go out to the balcony to get my swimmers and walk straight into the glass balcony doors, which of course were not opened as I had thought, didn't particularly hurt but my husband had the nerve to laugh!! I have never felt such rage, I was so angry and of course crying hysterically. Wink

KILNAMATRA · 12/11/2020 09:55

Would you not just repair it at a local garage yourself? I did that years ago in Greece . Rental company was non the wiser..

FatBottomedGurl · 12/11/2020 13:45

Mine was a driving one too - My mum had been in the car before me and left the car in gear (why do people do this?!). I started the car and went right through the neighbours fence.

He was very sweet about it and only accepted a bottle of wine as apology.

sunflowershine · 12/11/2020 14:00

38 weeks pregnant, reversed off my drive. There is a neighbours garage opposite my driveway (no road in between just another parking space).

There is miles of space to swing round without out hitting the front of the car. Unfortunately I walloped the front of the car into the garage, completely bashing the side, breaking the light and cracking the bumper so it had to be replaced. Also gouged a nice line out of neighbours bricks Confused

Luckily the neighbour just laughed and told me not to worry when I went to say sorry and offer to pay for the damage. DH was a little bit more annoyed! Oops.

Wotrewelookinat · 12/11/2020 16:35

When I was pregnant with DD1 I ran over the hoover cable while hoovering and managed to strip off all the insulation layer. It doesn’t sound like a big deal but it was a brand new hoover which we’d splashed out on for our new house. I was so upset I sank down on the stairs and bawled my eyes out...then when I recovered I was so cross that I ran over it again and again on purpose.

Scotabroad24 · 13/11/2020 11:27

Well wise and funny ladies of MN...

As well as making me howl with laughter over the last few days, and not feel so completely stupid, I'm happy to report I've handed the insurance-less rental car back, the very nice man booking it in took great pity when he saw how pregnant I am, and I've only paid about a third of what I really should have.

Lesson learnt. Don't drive whilst pregnant Grinand always take the insurance Confused

Good news OP, glad it ended well (well, as well as it could do!)

Might be outing but parked at work carpark when pregnant. Opposite a down ramp. Forgot to put handbrake on AND into park (automatic). God knows why, I still can't explain it myself.

You can see what's coming. Rolled down the ramp straight into a car parked on the level below. Reception called me but didn't give me many details, so off I went to the carpark thinking who the bloody hell has damaged my car Blush

By some stroke of luck (not that any of it was lucky) it didn't hit any of flashmobiles but an old banger. My husband knew the owner and did most of the talking cause I was too snottily crying about it all. He was also the nicest man ever about it, and apologised to me because I was upset! We sorted it through insurance he got enough to replace (as it was a banger, the damage was a write off), and I'm always meticulous about park and handbrake since.

MatildaonaWaltzer · 13/11/2020 13:37

I drove to hospital in labour. Through central London. Didn't occur to me that it was a dumb thing to do. I was on my own and had to get there without waiting for husband (who was at a party btw). Also left hospital bag at home.

LilaButterfly · 13/11/2020 15:29

When i was 9 months pregnant we went to the beach (lived in australia). It was really hot and when we got back to the car we threw our bag in the trunk and closed it, then realised the keys are un the bag and the car was locked. Both phones were also in the bag. We went to our hidden little spot on the beach far away from everything, and had to walk 40mins to the nearest restaurant in the sun at 40 degrees.

Todayisgood2 · 13/11/2020 15:35

Whilst 39 weeks pregnant with dc2 I decided to make the point that I could park our car in the new carport without a hitch and would have space to get both kids out. Drove into said new carport...... the end!

someoneorother · 14/11/2020 21:23

@HidingFromDD

Just to show it’s not just women...., Stopped at a traffic lights, three lanes, lots of cars. Looked in mirror and there’s a bloke behind me on his phone, he wasn’t slowing down and there was nowhere for me to go. He drove straight into back of my car, luckily not at great speed. He got out of the car, hugely apologetic and explained that his gf, of 6 months, had just rung him and told him she was pregnant. I had to calm him down about that before we could even get to exchanging details!
Several years ago I reversed into my wife's midwife's car (when she was at our house on a professional visit) and made a horrible mess of one side of it. For some reason I was only looking in the driver's side mirror. I think maybe I had a child in the car and children's songs on, but oh how mortifying!
RightYesButNo · 15/11/2020 12:21

I know this is a (mostly) light-hearted thread, and I don’t want to “pollute” it exactly, but... so, SO many of these are a result of sleep deprivation, and I suspect maybe even a lot of the “pregnancy hormone” ones are a result of months on months of not getting deep sleep as being uncomfortable or constantly needing the toilet. My husband flew helicopters for years and they wouldn’t let him fly if he’d gotten less than six hours of sleep, yet a lot of mums of babies or toddlers are expected to operate huge machines that can maim or kill whilst living on less sleep than that every night for months or years. If you’re suffering from sleep deprivation, please talk to your DP, DH, or even a friend you can swap babysitting with if you have an unsupportive DH (I’m very sorry), about helping you before you have an auto accident. There are a lot of stories about the other accident party being lovely here, but they’re not always lovely, and suddenly having to pay £100s to £1000s for an accident can cause horrific stress.

TJ17 · 15/11/2020 12:37

Genuinely still have no recollection of how or why this happened but when pregnant with DC1 my DH found a load of pens in our cutlery drawer.
Then over the course of the next few weeks still kept finding the odd one or two in there!!

It was only the two of us living here

Still absolutely baffles me but I can only assume it was me 🤷🏼‍♀️😅😂😂😂

Winecrispschocolatecats · 15/11/2020 13:37

DS was 10 months old and I was 4mths pregnant with DD - had a new front door fitted which, unlike the previous one, automatically locked from the outside when it closed. Heard the waste lorry arrive, dashed out to put the bin out, pulled the door closed behind me...DS inside, me locked outside.

Thanks to some heroics from my lovely neighbours we eventually managed to break in without too much damage Blush
