So a bit of background. I'm 37 weeks pregnant. Huge and uncomfortable. Trying to renovate/move house in the next 3 weeks before baby arrives. In between cars so have rented a little run around for a week.
Rushing today to meet the plumber at said new house as OH was running late at work, very carefully maneuvered the new driveway..... and royally hit the gate post Confused in the rental car, which doesn't have full insurance (I'm not in the UK it's not standard here before anyone calls me stupid) then I panicked and couldn't figure out how to reverse or go forward without bashing it more... so I did the only logical thing and got out, left the car half out the driveway and snottily cried to the plumber until he took pity and moved the car for me Blush it's dented both doors badly and full of scratches.

Please please someone tell me your stupid moments especially while pregnant so I can feel better!

Currently trying to muster the courage to call the rental company and tell them, also trying to swallow the fact that I've just run up a rather large excess bill into the thousands Sad

Also my husband treated himself to a nice Jaguar convertible as a mid life crisis. I parked it on the road, popped the hood up and wandered off to see friends in a coffee shop for a couple of hours. Came back to find I'd left the engine running (you don't need the keys present after it starts), ready for anyone that fancied driving it away. I did own up.

I drove to town, took buggy out of boot, strapped dd in and went shopping for 2 hours.
Got back to car and couldn’t find car keys. I walked back into town, asked in various shops. No luck. Walked back to car park and saw car keys hanging from the boot lock!

My bil was a social worker, he once put case papers on car roof and drove off, luckily realised almost immediately and had to retrieve them all from the roadside.

The funniest thing was when dd was a tiny baby we had an extension including a porch. The painter came out to paint the new back door. I put dd into pram and told painter if he finished before I returned from the market to lock the back door and put the key through the letterbox.
I left via the front door, pulled door shut, on Yale, and then locked porch door.
When I returned, over 2 hours later, the painter was sat in the porch on the floor looking very worried.
He’d decided to lock the back door from the inside and leave via the front door. He pulled front door shut popped keys through letterbox of main front door and promptly locked himself in the porch.
This was pre mobiles.
I asked him why he was sat down, he was trying to hide in case the boss turned up. In a glass porch. I couldn’t stop laughing especially as it was April 1st.

Stood on a flimsy, child's plastic table to reach something, thinking I was 8 stone rather than 8 months pregnant. Two of the legs snapped off and I ended up in A&E.

Myself and baby were both fine :-)

When I was pregnant, I feel asleep on the train, missed my stop and had a 45 minute wait in the cold for the next one. Not like me at all. I'm a chronic insomniac. Also, when I had a newborn I was so tired I poured milk in the fabric conditioner section of the washing machine and I put a just boiled kettle in the fridge when I was tidying up the kitchen. My brain was fried!

My DH managed to ruin a rental car. He only had the rental car in the first place because he had damaged his own car by hitting TWO parked cars on different occasions in one week. Then he hit a bollard in the bloody rental car. But weirdly, they never got back to us about charging for it, and touch wood, he's never had a ding or dent since. His insurance costs went through the roof for quite a few years after that.

Years ago driving to work but dropping dd off at childminder on the way. I drove around a roundabout and the back door on my side swung open. Obviously I had not shut it properly. With my seat belt still on but loosened a little, I managed to twist around, grab the handle of the door with my right hand but somehow the fingers of my left hand got trapped in the hinge side of the door. I was trapped and in pain. I cried for a while and then managed to my fingers out. Sore but nothing broken.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 11/11/2020 13:47

Not pregnant. However when my husband and I used to trade cars we kept all the keys in a large plastic Tupperware box...with no lid.

He was working on one day and asked me to test drive it, I pull out of our road and accelerate sharply (didn’t break speed limit but needed to check for excess smoke) looked in the rear view to see something bouncing on the road. Stop the car and get out and find the key box in the middle of the road...with 15 sets of car keys helpfully scattered everywhere! Did manage to find them all and swore loudly at DH for leaving the key box on the roof of the car!

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 11/11/2020 13:48

Not me but dsis. She had a 1yo and a newborn. Called me crying hysterically, was putting them in the car, 1yo is in the car, car is locked, keys are inside, she's stood on the pavement with newborn and bag, front door has locked behind her and it's freezing.

She only lived 1 street away at the time so I raced to her - calm her down, talk to 1yo through the glass to entertain her, only to realise the keys aren't in the car, they're in dsis bag so she's had them the whole time. Explained this which made her cry more - I think hormones are definitely to blame for that one!

Mine - was on hormone / fertility treatment. Reversed into DHs car on MILS drive, cried when he asked if I was ok then went inside leaving the door wide open 🙄

Hormones have a lot to answer for!

These stories have made me glad I wasn't driving when I was pregnant / my kids were tiny Grin

However I do have a story involving pregnancy and a car...

I was quite heavily pregnant and had a 16 month old as well. We lived in a flat above a kids' charity shop and I would take him down there every now and then to pick out a little toy or puzzle. One day we went down and he saw one of those red and yellow sit-in Little Tikes cars. You know the ones. Anyway, he got straight in to it and I let him play for a bit but then he refused to come out. Point-blank refused. I was so pregnant that I physically could not manoeuvre him out through either the window or the door of the car. So I did the only thing I could think of and BOUGHT the damn thing and let him "drive" it back to our flat. People who had passed us by and saw me begging him to get out and then saw him driving along grinning, made comments like "ahhh bless you let him have it after all", I was mortified. As we were on the first floor we had to leave it in the corridor of the ground floor (thankfully he agreed to get out of it on the promise of lunch!) and I had to ask my dad to come and pick it up in his car and take it back to my parents' house which had an actual garden for it to live in!!

However we then kept it for absolute ages and passed it on to family, so it turned out to be well worth the £7 and the embarrassment Grin

ArabellaScott · 11/11/2020 13:50

I thought you were going to say you'd shagged the plumber, OP. A door ding is nothing. I have several door dings before breakfast. Smile

messy123 · 11/11/2020 14:15

Lost car in a huge car park at John Lewis at the Trafford Centre, rang around for half an hour crying trying to find it.

Also, I power walked to my midwife appointment at 8 months pregnant, thinking it would be good exercise. Forgot about blood pressure reading, it was through the roof after my walk and had to go get it checked twice more that same week!!

PrismSpectrum · 11/11/2020 14:20

Oh bless you OP. You'll be able to laugh about it one day, honestly.
At 8 months pregnant we did a car boot sale to make space for baby stuff. I unthinkingly sold all my belts as none fit anymore. A few weeks later it finally dawned on me why all my trousers kept falling down. Blush

J1112 · 11/11/2020 14:26

A few hours after my 20 week scan for went excitedly to show my grandparents the photos - they couldn’t want to be Great grandparents. But whilst trying to park (I had only passed my test a few weeks before too) I hit another car. All the excitement from that day went! 🤣 As a new and youngish driver my insurance was sky high anyway.

To add further to the story. My partner and sons dad at the time (long split up now) wouldn’t help me sort it. I know it was my mistake but I was so ill at the beginning of my pregnancy that I had to minimise my work hours. He had promised to try and provide on his wage. Did he hell!

Dreamscomingtrue · 11/11/2020 14:29

Went to Legoland Windsor when it first opened. Had a frustrating day queueing up to 2 hours for each ride (there wasn’t enough rides for the amount of children there). Only managed to get on about 4 or 5 rides.
Including last minute dashes for the loo.

Went back to massive car park with no idea where our car was. That took another hour or two of wandering around to find it with sore feet.

My husband hates theme parks. I complained when I got home about the 2 hour queues.
We got complimentary tickets for our next visit.
My husband wouldn’t go back again.

So I spent the next 10 years visiting theme parks all over the U.K. on my own with 3 sons, we had a grand time and never lost the car again.

MoonJelly · 11/11/2020 14:39

I hate to say it, but isn't planning to move house on or around your due date the really, um, unwise thing in all this? And your DH presumably has to take some responsibility for that one!

AlexTheLittleCat · 11/11/2020 15:00

I ordered a wardrobe online from Ikea but forgot to order the carcass and only ordered the doors. I did wonder why it was cheaper than in the shop Grin. The lovely Ikea customer service guy couldn't cancel the delivery and sent the rest for without charging £40 for the second delivery.

ArialAnna · 11/11/2020 15:18

I've not read the whole thread but DO NOT tell the rental company! They will charge you through the nose to fix it. Take it to a good garage to fix (extend the car rental time if you need to). It will be much cheaper. We have done this in both Spain (scratched in car park when we weren't there) and Morocco (flat tyre), after being caught out with a small scratch in France. As you can see we don't have great luck with rental cars! Blush

Bad tins? I meant to write bad yins.
I think bad tins might be what PPs highly flammable beans came out of Grin

I had two near misses when newly pregnant and I'm sure it is a proven thing when pregnant.

First trip to Sainsbury's with baby if about seven weeks. Safely strapped into his car seat I put it in the back then answered a call while loading the shopping. Drove off and yep, hadn't strapped baby ds into the car. Luckily mums instinct kicked in and I'd only gone two car lengths before I stopped and checked and strapped him in. I'm still cross at myself for leaving him with a stranger while I went to get my purse. She was sat in a cafe in the same Sainsbury's. Looked like a granny so thought he'd be fine. Came back and his washable nappy had leaked wee on her trousers. I was still learning how long they lasted for. She was lovely about it. Unlike others who had complained about breastfeeding mums and I was told I couldn't feed him in the cafe Angry.

Hesnotlocal · 11/11/2020 16:29

Pregnant with DC 2, I took toddler DC1 to a theme park (with a couple of other mums & toddlers). Went on a sort of vintage car ride and DC2 wriggled around in the womb and somehow managed to jam by belly under the steering wheel. The ride had to be stopped so my friends could help me get out (the teenage boy controlling the ride looked horrified).

I worked until quite late in the pregnancy and needed to dress smartly to visit clients. One day I was wearing a dress with hold-ups to a site tour with several male colleagues and clients. Half way round it started to feel like something was going wrong with the hold-ups but my bump was too big for me to see my ankles without sitting down.
When we sat down for a discussion at the end of the tour I realised they had entirely fallen down and were flapping round my feet. The ladies loo was at the opposite side of the building so I tried to position myself behind a coffee table to pull them up secretly but it didn't work and as soon as we all stood up again they fell down again.

BlueCheckedTeatowel · 11/11/2020 16:42

When DD was 3 we lived in an apartment with a balcony and a sliding door. One day I was on the balcony, cleaning the outside of the sliding door while DD played on the carpet inside. She came toddling over and CLICK pulled down the lever and locked me out. After about 20 seconds of staring at me she wandered on back to her toys and plonked herself down, back to me. I tried banging on the glass, shouting for neighbours to help and then had to ring DH at work, sobbing hysterically, to drag him out of a meeting and home to come inside and unlock the door Blush. longest 45 minutes of my life.

FlurkenSchnit · 11/11/2020 16:52

I reversed into my next door neighbour's car when I was pregnant with DS1 whilst trying to parallel park after work one day.

In my defence it was really dark as was winter and the street lights were on the blink - so I'm in the car and I just need to move back a little bit more to straighten up but the car wouldn't move...I press a bit harder on the accelerator but it still won't move and I don't know why??

Turns out I was already up against their bumper and they were stood on their doorstep watching the whole thing! I was so embarrassed and just got out of the car where it was, mumbled sorry and ran into the house before I started crying. I then made my partner at the time go out and sort it all out with the neighbour and I tried my best to avoid them forever more.

JMG1234 · 11/11/2020 18:33

Remembered another one. My friend was 8 months pregnant and went to test drive a people carrier. Pulled out of the showroom, hit the accelerator instead of the brake (afterwards the salesman said it was a common error as the brake was so high but hadn't thought to mention it). As it happened, our local football team were playing so there were loads of supporters wandering around. In her efforts to avoid hitting them, she drove straight into and then over a wall and managed to write off the garage's brand new car. They then felt compelled to buy one.

This is the best thread I’ve read in some time - long time lurker!
I was about 6 months pregnant and at work in the emergency services. I turned up to work half an hour early and was completely bewildered when none of my colleagues were there at all. Send a stream of raging messages and when the replies came through they pointed out that I was an hour early for the shift. I had completely forgotten what time I started work and had come in for the wrong time. Donuts on me that day!!

Scotabroad24 · 11/11/2020 20:12

I'm so so glad I posted this thread last night Grin what a tonic reading these! Some heart stopping moments that all turn into funny stories down the line.

I'll keep repeating that mantra in my mind come Friday morning when I have to face the music and return the hire car.

I had thought of that....but the damage is so bad I'm not sure I can get it looking back to normal so I'm scared they'll charge me on top of me fixing it as well Blush the terms and conditions have a maximum excess which is very high but not sure I could cope paying twice---- Sad
