weighted blankets

I am a very poor sleeper, take ages to get to sleep. Also very anxious. I know these blankets were originally designed for children with autism, as calming blankets , but are now being touted as helping people sleep.

They are expensive , so wondered if people here have experience of using them and if they do help with getting to sleep .

Also so many around, any recommendations .

Thanks.

Some people Fong the extra weight comforting and it helps them find calm and fall asleep, including but not limited to those with ASD. I'd buy a cheap one and see how you get on. They also come in various weights.

Livedandlearned · 10/11/2020 19:50

I ordered one today from a company that does them quite cheaply (£19) just to see if my dd likes it. I'll find the link if you like?

A few people in the Christmas bargains thread have bought them from here with good reviews. I keep umming and ahhing about it.

As someone with anxiety that I’m not sure if the feeling of weight on me when I’m trying to relax and sleep sounds very.. relaxing? Sounds like it could spur a panic attack more likely.. for me anyway!

NotMeNoNo · 10/11/2020 19:56

I made one for my son. He doesn't like it much but I can sure see why people use them. It's like having a number of cats sit on you. I find it relaxing for me.

There have been tons of threads about these in the last few weeks. With loads of recommendations etc on.

But here's mine.
I've got a gravity Blanket. It's amazing. I sleep so much better with it. It was expensive, but they had a payment plan which was the only way I could afford it.

Things to consider: it should be about 10% of your body weight. You aren't meant to share it, so a single duvet size is better than a double. A lot of the cheaper ones didn't seem to have removable covers and/or were weird sizes so you couldn't buy a duvet cover to put them in. I bought mine over a year ago though so there are many many more options than there were then.

RealLifeHotWaterBottle · 10/11/2020 20:00

Can anyone say whether the extra weight also means its warmer? I love the idea but hate feeling toasty at night

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 10/11/2020 20:02

Mines no warmer than a fleece blanket and less so than a duvet.

TurquoiseDragon · 10/11/2020 20:08

Mine is enough to keep me warm at night and not overheat, and I tend to run hot anyway.

I get more sleep of a decent quality since I bought mine. The only issue I have is the size.

It's 153cm by 203 cm, meaning it's too narrow but a tiny bit too long for a double duvet cover. I'm making my own covers for them by cutting down king size duvet covers for the width (I plan on using the excess fabric for cushion covers. I'm not planning on paying for expensive made to measure covers.

Mine's quite heavy, but as I'm fat it fits within the recommended weight range (it should be between 7% and 12% of your body weight). I love the feel of it draping around me.

I think I may go for a cheap one to see if it helps and how the weight feels

If I like it can later get a better one , but haven't spent a lot upfront if don't like it.

Thanks everyone.,

I’ve just brought a cheap velvet one I think I’ll like nice and heavy soft as well.
