Broken phone, monthly contract still payable - do I buy a PAYG phone - HELP!

My son has smashed his phone which is relatively new with a lot of the contract still payable.
I've been looking at getting a replacement and was looking at 'Pay As You Go' assuming I could use that with the existing contract but DH says you can't do that.
I can't go to a shop and I can't contact the airtime provide either online of by phone.

Can anyone advise me?

You need a phone that is either unlocked or on the network that your son's contract is on. O2 PAYG phones are unlocked, for example this one.

Is it insured? Can you get it repaired?

TeddyIsaHe · 10/11/2020 19:28

Just buy a sim free phone. I’d get a refurbished one in eBay, there’re cheap and in good nick.

This is what I have done in the past when I broke phones before I could afford insurance!

You should be able to get a good deal on an unlocked phone on Black Friday. Then you just switch the SIM over.

Walkingtheplank · 10/11/2020 19:33

Not insured and not reparable as far as I can see.

@Hayeahnobutw Son is on O2, so I buy a PAYG O2 phone and use the existing SIM?

Yes.

Also Tesco mobile is on the o2 network 🙂 might give you other options for purchase

No spare/older phones in the house that are unlocked or on O2?

Itsorange · 10/11/2020 20:56

Just buy a sim free phone. I did that a few months ago as it was cheaper to buy the phone and continue with my monthly sim only contract than take out a new contract to get a new phone. I got my phone from Currys

SenorFrog · 10/11/2020 20:58

Get an O2 phone, don't get Tesco, it definitely will not work unless unlocked. O2 sims work in Tesco phones but not the other way round.

Giffgaff also use O2 network & they sell refurbished phones as well as new.
DH just got this one and is very happy with it. Only 32GB though but will take a memory card.
