How many times a day do you put your dishwasher on?

Just being nosey really as I've only just brought my very first dishwasher (no idea why i waited so long!).

Do you wait until it is totally full? How many times a day do you use it? Do you use the short or long circles?

After dinner every evening but during lockdowns it goes on after lunch too!

Please, please don't run your dishwasher overnight. I know three people who have had house fires caused by dishwashers. Luckily they all got out safely but it took months for their homes to be habitable again.

DramaAlpaca · 10/11/2020 20:22

Once a day now there's only three of us at home. When the whole family is here it might be twice a day.

userxx · 10/11/2020 20:37

Either every day or every other day, only 2 of us and it's a slimline. When I bought my house years ago the kitchen fitter was outraged that a single female would need a dishwasher, he kept trying to talk me out of it. No chance.

Once or twice. 4 of us.

ineedaholidaynow · 10/11/2020 20:48

We used to run ours at night, every night. We also used to run our washing machine when we were out. Then saw the damage a tumble dryer fire did at a relative's block of flats. Never run any of these appliances when we are out or at night now. We now run the dishwasher on a shorter cycle after our evening meal, but always make sure it has finished before going to bed.

TeaOneSugar · 10/11/2020 20:48

Once a day, it goes on after dinner.

MisiSam · 10/11/2020 20:52

Twice but I only have a slim line one so I can't fit much into it, I'm new to dishwashers, I can't believe I had gone my whole life without one. Such a wonderful thing!!

TeaOneSugar · 10/11/2020 20:57

Pleasantville Mine is also always full enough to put on after dinner everyday, if we've eaten out for dinner it gets left into after breakfast the next day, but on an average day dishes from three meals plus mugs, glasses etc. fills my dishwasher once every 24hrs.

EasilyDepleted · 10/11/2020 21:02

Most nights straight after dinner. Occasionally skip a night if for example we've had takeaway so no pots and pans.

Never overnight or when we're out because of the fire risk.

AlwaysLatte · 10/11/2020 21:06

Usually twice but sometimes three if a particular lot of utensils used. Today I made soup and bread for lunch and we had roast chicken and cauliflower cheese for supper and lots of glasses as no one uses a mug or glass twice so three times today.

AlwaysLatte · 10/11/2020 21:09

We do put rinsed pet bowls in. Considering everything has been going round for two hours in there and is way too hot to touch when it first finishes means that any germs have had their butt kicked big time!

catwithflowers · 10/11/2020 22:08

Two adults here. About twice a week once it's full. I fill it, wash a few things like pots by hand, and set it off to wash overnight (economy 7 😉).

PontiacBandit · 10/11/2020 22:15

Usually every other day unless we've used a lot of pots in cooking.

Xmasbaby11 · 10/11/2020 22:27

Twice a day if we're all home - family of 4.

With visitors- 3 times .. maybe 4!

I love the dishwasher!

Grimbot · 10/11/2020 23:05

Usually once, sometimes twice if we’ve just a lot of pans to cook dinner. Family of 4.

Tatum1234 · 10/11/2020 23:22

2-3 times a day.

SockQueen · 10/11/2020 23:24

Once a day if we're all home for three meals, less frequently if I'm at work/DC at nursery as we'll only have one meal at home on those days. 2 adults, 2 kids (under 5)

IHeartHounds · 10/11/2020 23:26

Just when it is full. Probably every 36-48 hours.

grassgreenthisside · 10/11/2020 23:44

@Woui

There is only 2 of us but we have been putting it on straight after our evening meal on a 30 minute wash because if we wait until its full (usually 2 days) we have to use the long (2.5 hours) wash to get rid on the dried on stains.

I wonder which is better!

...and yes, loving it. Its mad that I've never had one!

Use the eco setting, more than sufficient

Don't skimp on tablets, cheap ones don't work.

Remember to check your salt and rinse aid frequently.

A nice freshener replaced every few months is a nice touch

BackforGood · 10/11/2020 23:56

Ours gets set off when it is full.
So, how often, depends on how many are here, and what we've been eating / cooking. So, the slow cooker dish takes up a lot more room if we've used that, than if we had something like jacket potatoes for a meal, which doesn't involve any pots and pans.

If I'm putting things in that have, say gravy or sauce on them , then I'd rinse them before putting them in anyway controversial on MN I know, just as I would before starting a bowl of washing up. I don't want gravy or sauce in my washing up bowl, so have always rinsed it off before putting in the dishwasher so not an issue on the days when plates wait overnight for a wash.

TeaOneSugar · 11/11/2020 09:08

catwithflowers Have a look into that economy 7 unless you have electric storage heaters it's probably not cost effective, it didn't cost me anything to have a new meter fitted.

Squirrelblanket · 11/11/2020 09:57

Once a day, after our evening meal. There are two of us and it's usually full by then as we're both at home all the time at the moment. I'll wash awkward shaped things or pans that don't fit very well in the sink.

muddledmidget · 11/11/2020 10:04

2 of us here and a slimline dishwasher. Usually goes on every evening after dinner and then emptied the following morning while the kettle boils. Occasionally it doesn't need to go on, in which it goes on after lunch the following day. We don't put large trays into it (as they don't fit) or the large pyrex dishes but everything else goes in

BiddyPop · 11/11/2020 11:04

We have a slim dishwasher (it’s what fits in the space) so I think it’s 2 fewer place settings than a regular one. Family of 3.

We used to run it every 2-3 days, as needed. Since lockdown, with both DH and I wfh ft, there are more breakfast dishes, more mugs during the day, lunch dishes, etc (and more frequent wine glasses mid week). So now it seems to need running most days, sometimes every 2nd day depending.

We run it at an eco setting, only do the full hot long cycle very occasionally for really dirty pots or to clean the machine.

We generally do pots and cooking utensils by hand still - some don’t go in the machine so we generally need to do some wash up every day anyway. But will fill up remaining space with things that can go in if we are about to run it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/11/2020 12:16

As often as I need to on the eco setting.

You don’t need to rinse, you’re introducing unsoftened water if you do that and creating aerosols of dog food particles to breathe in 🤮. Scraping with a spatulas is just as efficient.
