Money for nothing

Is it just me being unartistic, or are the redone furniture pieces on the programme "Money for nothing" really c*p?

The premise is that entrepreneur Sarah Moore saves things from being dumped and transforms them into valuable pieces, making money for people who had no idea there was money to be made from their trash.

What they really do is take absolute tat like old furniture and give it to skilled designers., craftsmen and artists who might use part of it to turn into more pretentious tat that might sell for £££

Can't believe the prices she fligs some of the utter bollocks which is "Produced"

Sometimes they are horrible, occasionally ok. I get all twitchy when I see a nice wood set of drawers, etc that just needs sanding/polishing taken to bits and made into something not very useful.

Yes I cringe at some of the things they make.

Sforsh49 · 10/11/2020 17:56

I have renamed this programme "Money for Old Rope" and get really angry at the TV shouting when someone charges an extortionate amount to fling a bit of Frenchic Paint on a Gplan Chair and then they sell them on for hundreds. DH just laughs at me

I think last weeks that was on annoyed her, she made something and the profit was £95, took it to the owner who lived in a gorgeous place, obviously had money, he said he'd give the money to his wife, I thought he'd have given it to charity. Sarah said at the end "I wonder what SHE'LL spend it on", it seemed like she thought "spoilt bitch"

Crankley · 10/11/2020 18:49

I'm watching it at the moment. I only watch it when EJ or Jake or on, I don't like the female presenter much. Today he3 made an old fire iron into a lovely and functional stool, giving the previous owner just under £150 and she said she will donate to the local hospice. A few have said they are giving it to charity. I think the woman is going to make a dogs dinner of the table - we shall see.

Handhold · 10/11/2020 19:03

If the recipients of the cash were to give it to charity would make the whole thing more palatable. You could at least think something good had come of the whole sorry exercise!

Today Sarah took 2 chairs from a lady who said she had lost her husband a couple of months ago. No words from Sarah [ I'm sorry to hear that, sorry for your loss, for eg.]...just 'Can I have your chairs'.

I didn't like that and I'm right off her. I'm staggered at the immense amounts of money changing hands for chopping old stuff about. Some of the items are good, clever. Some are awful, really bad, rough and tatty.

ThistleWitch · 10/11/2020 19:06

Some of things are truly truly awful agreed

And how much they cost to do up as well, beggar's belief

DefinitelyPossiblyMaybe · 10/11/2020 19:18

Yeah most of the makeovers are dreadful. I like Jay Blades, but his stuff is always awful, and the woman who sticks wallpaper to everything (that would start to peel as soon as it got any use) - just rubbish. The metal workers are often good and that older chap who's the carpenter.

slipperywhensparticus · 10/11/2020 19:20

Its when they charge £875 to MAKE a product and sell it for £880 so they get a fiver

Pointless

Well I love the programme.

Love Norman the cabinet maker, Kev the artisan blacksmith and most of the upholsterers.
Dislike the monstrosities made by Rupert and am bored by the lighting guy.

The minimum that is handed back to the original owners seems to be about £50 - which, considering that their items would have been pulped at the tip, is £50 for nothing.

It is telling, though, that the vast majority of the refinished items are bought by chi-chi shops who, no doubt, append a "as seen on BBC's Money for Nothing" label to justify the selling price.
