How many food cupboards do you have in your kitchen?

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 10/11/2020 15:30

We have a fairly big kitchen. However most of the cupboards are taken up with pots, pans, crockery, etc. We only have three cupboards plus our fridge, for food. We then have more in the utility room for 'stock' so we don't have to go out every couple of days. Half of one cupboard is taken up by different types of teas and drink-making stuff. The 'main' cupboard is always a nightmare because stuff is crammed there and you need to be careful not to let anything fall out when you move something. It's maddening. How does everyone else organise their kitchen storage? There are two of us here three nights a week - the rest of the time it is just one person. Posting because of a mix of frustration and curiosity.

Not enough.Angry One large corner cupboard for dry goods. One small cupboard for herbs and spices and another same size for teas and coffee.
Oils and vinegars live on a shelf and cereals and biscuit tin on the counter. I also have a spaghetti jar and big tubs of pasta on the counter.
I have a kind of pantry under the stairs where I keep unopened packets of things like pasta, and also potatoes/onions. And snacks. Tins are kept under the base cupboards or in the lean to (closed off side return)
I bloody hate having food scattered around everywhere and especially hate it being on the countertops and would love to have plenty of cupboards to store everything neatly.
I'd love a proper big kitchen with space to sit. We were planning an extension but then Covid hit and DP has been on furlough for most of the year. Maybe next year....

Oh and a separate baking cupboard. Which is a 600mm wide wall one.

WitchOfTheWest · 10/11/2020 18:02

We have one floor to ceiling larder cupboard which is prob just short of a meter wide. Top left is recipe book though and top right is spirits. Bottom right is also used for storing cat food sachets. We have a half cupboard full of herbs/spices/condiments. And another half cupboard for cereal and pop.

Not enough! Three standard width cupboards (two/three shelves deep) for dry goods and some tins (the three shelf one also holds 1.5 shelves of baking tins, etc). We have some food on the side (eg onions, tea/coffee) and quite a bit under the stairs - especially cans, cat food and the one extra of lots of basics. I wish we had a larder! Or a cellar...

TroysMammy · 10/11/2020 18:07

One cupboard for tins, flours, sugars, yeast and baking things.
One for cereal, tea, coffee & squash.
One for lentils, packet desserts, noodles, dried peas etc, oils, stock cubes, salt.
Shelf on shelving unit for pasta, rices & cous cous in kilner jars.
Herb & spice cupboard.
Shelves in utility room for dried fruit, seeds, condiments, more herbs and spices, vinegars and sugars for preserving and lots of other things, too much to mention without coming across as a hoarder/prepper/fearful for a zombie apocalypse Grin

Fischliweiss · 10/11/2020 18:08

We have a pantry. It's an under stairs cupboard in the kitchen we added shelves to as the space wasn't useful otherwise. We also have two wheeled trolleys for a veg rack and extras. I don't know how I'd manage now with just cupboards. In any future house a pantry or room for a pantry cupboard would be a priority.

Our house is a Victorian terrace 2 bed, not big and fancy by any means but the pantry is one of those things that makes it feel nice!

HerRoyalNotness · 10/11/2020 18:12

We have a pantry built into the corner between the oven/cupboards and fridge space. Even when we lived in the U.K. we took out the built in fridge and turned that into a food pantry, as we had room for a freestanding fridge

WitchOfTheWest · 10/11/2020 18:13

@passthemustard jealous of that cupboard!! We wanted one but would have had to forego the only heat source in a large kitchen/utility!

AlwaysLatte · 10/11/2020 18:15

It's funny because I only emptied and cleaned them out yesterday.
Cupboard 1: tins and jars only - I keep stocks topped all the time so 4x tins each of the things ha we use the most - chickpeas, chopped tomatoes, Passata, different types of beans, baked beans, mackerel, anchovy, evaporated milk (husband 🤮), ready made past sauces for quick meals. Etc
Cupboard 2: squash, bread making stuff
Cupboard 3: sauces, spreads, packet mixes (taco kits etc)
Cupboard 4: cereals, cake making ingredients
Cupboard 5: tea, coffee and hot chocolate
Oh just remembered a 6th one: Blush treat stuff: savoury biscuits, popcorn, cakes, packed lunch things and biscuits when I remember to make them.
Then shelving for the flour and dry stuff and spices. It ought to be enough but it still isn't! It's all super organised but I'm going wrong somewhere.

Chasingsquirrels · 10/11/2020 18:18

Me, 18yo & 14yo. Plus the bloke I'm seekng a couple of days a week.

Wall cupboards

  1. Tins, jars, passata, sandwich spread, pasta, rice, noodles etc.
  2. Spices, salt, gravy, condiments, baking things - sugar, flour, icing sugar, oats, sultanas, cocoa etc.
  3. Cereals, biscuit tin, cereal bars, Pringles etc (this is a corner cupboard).
  4. Honey, chocolate spread, tea & coffee. Bread, crumpets, naans, mince pies (this is only half the cupboard, the rest is mugs).

Base cupboards

  1. Box with various crisps in (half the cupboard).
  2. Potatoes, onions, pull out metal drawer with some spares (probably about 1/3 of the cupboard).

Plus in another cupboard 2 of those plastic cereal dispenser boxes with plain & bread flour in as I brought 16kg bags. The rest of the bag is in a wheeled plastic box at the back of the under the stairs cupboard.

Then have 2 wall & 2 base cupboards in the garage with extra supplies - tins, cereal, soft drinks etc.

@passthemustard I'm Very envious of your turning shelves...

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 10/11/2020 18:32

@passthemustard

I've got a big larder corner cupboard with 5 turnable shelves. And a smaller cupboard next to it which I keep cereals and squash in. (Basically anything too tall for the shelves.) Then we have a tall larder fridge and an under counter freezer. There's 6 of us here.
What brilliant use of space!

None

We have a walk in pantry that stores all the food, freezer, microwave, kitchen appliances.

I have pan drawers, cleaning cupboard and tea/coffee cupboard in the kitchen

When we extended this was too if the list!

itbemay1 · 10/11/2020 18:47

I have a big larder cupboard with 4 shelves, drinks and heavy stuff on bottom, next one up is for spices, packets , flour etc, then bread and veg, then tins. We don't have a lot of tins. That's it

Zoflorabore · 10/11/2020 19:19

Yes of course. It may not be perfect but it suits me!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 10/11/2020 19:23

I have a tiny kitchen, with only 2 x 1m base cupboards (one has the sink above it) , 2 x 1m wall cupboards and 1 x 50cm wall cupboard. They are filled with the cups, bowls, tins etc.

Thankfully I then have a pantry which houses a tall fridge and has shelves in it too. Not as much space as I'd like, but far better than nothing. The food in it would fill 2 wall cupboards if we had them.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 10/11/2020 19:29

I have 7 double cupboards in my kitchen, only 2 (doubles) for food storage.

Twobrews · 10/11/2020 19:43

One full double cupboard for all my baking ingredients, one full double cupboard for dried goods, 6ft larder fridge, one single cupboard for spices, vinegars, etc. No freezer to speak of (it's outside in a barn so I don't really bother!) Old fashioned kitchen, with units on 3 sides. Also got sideboards and dressers and built in cupboards for all my baking tins and paraphernalia in the dining room. It's a very old house with loads of other issues - damp etc but its great for storage.
3 of us. We tend to shop most days, DH picks stuff up after work, he likes to have a new meal every night!

Store spaghetti in a tall plastic container, stands upright in the bottom cupboard. I like to go through the cupboards and fridge regularly because DH likes buying groceries but won't check what's already in. So I regularly find 4 half empty jars of sundried tomatoes etc. 3 boxes of teabags.

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 11/11/2020 13:38

@ExclamationPerfume

We keep rice, spaghetti and pasta in these jars on the worktop.
I don't mind those jars but I hate cleaning so I try to have as little as possible outside cupboards :-/

Goodness. Do you have a massive kitchen/house? I'm very jealous!

I like the idea of using baskets. I'll get myself some!

2 adults and DS aged 2 here...

1 single top cupboard for tins, pasta, spices etc.
1 single bottom cupboard for crisps, biscuits, dried food, snacks for DS etc.

That's it. We shop for what we want each week based on a meal plan so we don't need masses of food sitting in the cupboards.

The other cupboards in my kitchen are filled with;
Single top cupboards - 1 for glasses, 1 for cups.
Single bottom cupboards - 1 for plates, 1 for pans/pots, 1 for cat food & litter, 1 for candles & arts/craft supplies for DS.
Full length cupboard - mop, cleaning supplies, washing powder & vases.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 11/11/2020 14:04

only 2 in the kitchen but they are mostly herbs, spices and bottles like soy sauce, vinegars etc. I do however have a full selection of jars on the dresser containing things like rice, flour, breakfast cereals and I have a huge walk in pantry that I use for all tins, packets, spare items. I plan ahead and get everything out before I start cooking.

Itsagrandoldteam · 11/11/2020 14:09

I've just been and counted them, I've got 22 cupboards and 14 drawers. Most of them are filled with crap.

We store food in 4 of the large cupboards and treats in a smaller one.

We have a pretty big kitchen, but the lay out is not great, clearly designed by a man.
