How many food cupboards do you have in your kitchen?

We have a fairly big kitchen. However most of the cupboards are taken up with pots, pans, crockery, etc. We only have three cupboards plus our fridge, for food. We then have more in the utility room for 'stock' so we don't have to go out every couple of days. Half of one cupboard is taken up by different types of teas and drink-making stuff. The 'main' cupboard is always a nightmare because stuff is crammed there and you need to be careful not to let anything fall out when you move something. It's maddening. How does everyone else organise their kitchen storage? There are two of us here three nights a week - the rest of the time it is just one person. Posting because of a mix of frustration and curiosity.

I’ve just realised we only have one cupboard just for food 😂. It really is a very very small kitchen.

thegcatsmother · 10/11/2020 16:08

A triple larder cupboard, with stuff on the top as well (the pasta, tea and baking boxes), and the baked bean stash lives up there too.

I have a tall upright freezer and a fridge freezer as well. Never knowingly undercatered...the booze lives elsewhere.

TheSweetestHalleluja · 10/11/2020 16:11

One double cupboard for food, which was fine for just the two of us. But now that we have 2 dc, we have added a sideboard which has two cupboards, four drawers and on the top I keep cereal and pasta in food storage containers.

Five cupboards and a veg drawer thing. Family of four.

We also have a larder, but it’s become a dumping ground for kids craft stuff that they never use, empty tins/crates that ‘might come in handy’ and stuff I need to get round to putting on Gum Tree like a Little Helper Fun Pod, which takes up a tonne of space and I really don’t know why I haven’t dealt with it before now 😩.

We're short on cupboard space in our kitchen (and the rest of the house) but we have to put up with it because it's a housing association house.

We have a single medicine cupboard, a cup and glass cupboard, a plates, bowls and appliances cupboard, one for pans and oven trays, a double corner cupboard for food packets and tins and a single one for sauces and baking stuff and then another for cereals. Then we have one for electrical bits and pieces and one for Tupperware. The last cupboard is taken up by the gas meter and has no space for anything else!

Out of 9 cupboards, only 3 (incl. the double corner one) are used for food. We seem to have lots of things out on the worktops and at the top of the cupboards too.

DanaScully53 · 10/11/2020 16:16

I've got 2 double cupboards and 2 single cupboards for food and drinks. I've got loads of herbs and spices so DP turned me a 3 tier spice rack which sits on worktop. I store my unopened packs of spaghetti in tennis ball tins (well washed). They dont break like my glass one which my IN use ones are in and stop them from getting smashed up. I could do with more space though. I buy white bread flour by the 16kg bag so this takes up loads of space then theres umpteen different flours......I need to stop bakingSmile

passthemustard · 10/11/2020 16:26

I've got a big larder corner cupboard with 5 turnable shelves. And a smaller cupboard next to it which I keep cereals and squash in. (Basically anything too tall for the shelves.) Then we have a tall larder fridge and an under counter freezer. There's 6 of us here.

Small flat, 2 people, tiny kitchen. 1 main food cupboard and some tiny cupboards.
1 (single size) main cupboard for most food items in packets and tins
1 slim cupboard for pasta/rice/dal etc
1 slim cupboard for herbs & spices
1 slim for teas and coffees
1 wide but shallow cupboard (contains extractor pipe) for junk food & biscuits etc, and spare oils and random stuff
Also have a tiny trolley outside the kitchen which contains some stuff, potatoes, onions, more rice and other junk.
Tons more stuff all over the counters.

I dream of a walk-in pantry worthy of Pinterest, or Nigella.

thegcatsmother · 10/11/2020 16:28

Forgot! I also have a triple veg rack and two drawers stuffed full of herbs and spices. I have a wine rack full of vinegars and vermouth for cooking, and I have a couple of long containers either side of the cooker that hold the soy sauce, Hendersons, Lea and Perrins, chilli sauce, and I have my large spice pots there with fennel seed, caraway seed, cumin seed etc there as well.

Larder unit -
shelf 1 cereals,
shelf 2 flours, rice, pasta and spaghetti
Shelf 3 seasoning gravy granules and lentils
Shelf 4 dried stuff I use less often

Large pull out drawer for biscuits crisps and chocolates

Another large pull out drawer for noodles, mash, dried fruits, nuts, and tins

Single shelf in cupboard for sugar, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, chocolate spread, and honey.

I have a pantry in the basement for extra tins, sauces, sugars, teabags and large bags of rice and chapatti flour. Another large larder unit in the basement for large drums of oil and more rice.

MrGorsky · 10/11/2020 16:39

One pantry cupboard with four shelves and a spice rack. There's also a small standing unit in there for baking stuff like icing.
We've got two under counter freezers and a larder fridge.

Roo1000 · 10/11/2020 16:42

8 cupboards for food, American fridge freezer plus two under worktop freezers in utility and under cabinet fridge. Plus cube storage units in utility for over spill. I must admit, I did go more mental than normal during lockdown and have used two cupboards in the utility that I wouldn’t have normally used. I often forget what I’ve got and have to do a recky every few weeks lol! Family of 4.

Prufrocks · 10/11/2020 16:43

Just one but it’s got delusions of pantry-ness.

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 10/11/2020 16:48

@Zoflorabore Any chance of a picture to show how you organise your doublecupboard? My thinking is that our shelves are too high so we're not using all the space. But maybe wall units usually only have X number of shelves so as not to become too heavy?

Just counted. 11 cupboards, three pull out corner ones.
One cupboard for soft drinks
One cupboard for baking goods and condiments
One cupboard for rarely used gadgets
One for crisps
One for pasta / rice / spices
One for tins / jars and Tupperware
One for tea, coffee and mugs
One for glasses
One for baking and pie dishes, lasagne trays etc
Eight drawers (cutlery, Sharp knives, implements, tea towels, chopping boards, napkins, odds and sods etc)
One cupboard for roasting trays, gravy boats
One cupboard for saucepans.
Fridge and freezer.

It's a surprisingly small kitchen, but I ADORE how many cupboards it has

birkenstocks4ever · 10/11/2020 17:09

Larder unit for majority food & drink
Narrow wall cupboard X2 - 1 for spices oils etc, one for crisps & snacks
2 large corner cupboards for crockery, cooking dishes etc
2 narrow bottom cupboards for baking trays, jugs, chopping boards
2 wall cupboards - one each for glasses and mugs
2 drawer units for cutlery and utensils, pans, tea towels, tin foil etc
Small kitchen for 4 but well organised. Spaghetti is stored upright in an IKEA utensil holder

CountFosco · 10/11/2020 17:15

There are 5 of us in the house and I was brought up in the back of beyond so always have to have enough food in the house to last about a month at least. Thankfully we have a big kitchen and a utility room.

We have 3 fridges and 2 freezers but that's mainly because the previous owners were a couple so just had under the counter built in fridges and freezers (so tiny!), they are all completely full. We also have two slim pull out spice drawers, a condiments cupboard, a gluten cupboard, a baking and rice cupboard (big one in the corner), a teas and coffees and snacks cupboard, a tins cupboard, another gluten cupboard with oatcakes and crackers but also jams and honey. So that's 6 cupboards for food plus the spices. Plus 2 big cupboards elsewhere for Brexit.

GuyFawkesDay · 10/11/2020 17:16

8 wall cupboards
1 food wardrobe
2 corner under counter cupboards
1 u Der sink double cupboard
2 wide sets of under counter drawers
Plus dishwasher, fridge freezer

lucysmam · 10/11/2020 17:27

2, but one is half a cupboard. The other half is cups and glasses. My kitchen's really poorly designed/laid out.

I do have a massive pantry though which is quite full.

thebuntingcat · 10/11/2020 17:48

Large pantry for unopened jars, tins, pasta, rice, flour, sugar, jam, UHT milk, mineral water, juice etc, plus pans, cleaning products and spare plates, kitchen gadgets etc

Spice cupboard with two shelves (I use a lot of spices)

Cupboard with shelf for tea, coffee, sugar cubes, stock cubes, salt, upper shelf for opened packets of pasta, rice, porridge oats

Cupboard for opened packets of flour, cornflour, dried fruit, nuts etc for baking

Cupboard for coffee pods and breakfast cereal

Corner cupboard for cooking oil, vinegars, cling film, freezer bags etc

Open shelves for spaghetti jar, lentils, chick peas, bulghur, dried beans

We are mostly two, but often six or more and don’t have any shops nearby. Fruit and Vegetables are bought twice a week and kept in vegetable rack (onions and potatoes) and fridge. Meat/ chicken bought fortnightly and kept in fridge/freezer and small freezer in kitchen. We could easily withstand a month-long siege, probably more. However many cupboards I have, I will fill. They are tidy though, and I operate a careful first in/first out system.

Mixedupworld · 10/11/2020 17:55

I have two on the walls. I'm a wheelchair user and can't actually get into them. One has excess food and crockery in, the other has excess cleaning supplies and my excess medication in.

Then I have a really tiny cupboard with bin bags, tea towels, cling film and kitchen foil in.

Then 3 standard cupboards. One has all food in it, one has my crockery, pots and pans in. The 3rd us under the sink and has cleaning supplies in.

My kitchen has 3x4 foot floor space in it.

AlwaysLatte · 10/11/2020 17:57

We don't have many for food either, we've got 16 cupboards in the kitchen and only 4 are used for food. There's so much bulky stuff - salad spinner, cake tins, cake boxes, food processor bits, gadgets like waffle maker and steak grill plus all the numerous pots and bowls and pans. And I edit it regularly - things not used, go. We do have quite a bit of shelving in the utility with 32 big and medium Kilner jars for things like flours, sugars, pulses etc though, and the spices are all on very narrow shelving along one wall. I'd love more food storage though! I had a pantry in my last house - miss that!

AlwaysLatte · 10/11/2020 17:58

Oh 5 for food if you count the tea/coffee cupboard. Still not enough!

betterwithouthim · 10/11/2020 17:58

Since I had my kitchen done it's great. Two 7ft ish 300mm wide larders and they hold everything except tea coffee hot chocolate etc which goes in a separate cupboard with the mugs and glasses. It's way better than I had before. Top shelf of pullout is high so I have a spaghetti jar up there.
