How far into puberty did you DS have his growth spurt?

DS is 12. He first showed signs of puberty when he was 8.5yrs (BO and a bit of public hair). I checked with our gp as it seemed very early to me but he reassured me it was within the range of normal.

He's still the same height as his peers and following the 50th centile. I thought he might of hit a growth spurt by now. My concern comes from reading that precocious puberty can prevent children from reaching their full height potential. I know he didn't have precocious puberty but I'm still concerned.

He's obviously not finished puberty yet. Please no comments that its weird for me to be this involved in my sons development. I wouldn't have concerns if it wasn't for his early start. Many thanks.

DS has started needing deodorant, voice changing, and has hit a growth spurt in the last 6 months since turning 14. He has grown the same amount in 6 months as he did in the previous year. He was 25th percentile for height at 14.

Puberty at 13/14 - no matter how much lynx Africa he sprayed or showers he reluctantly took he generally smelled like old kebab meat Confused. Noticed the same peculiar smell on both of my nephews as they went through early puberty for about 6 months

Growth spurt year 11 to 5ft 10 and then again in year 13 to 6ft 1

I have never followed percentiles. Never understood them but DS was 12 in July. His voice has broken and he’s talker than me, just so 5’7 ish. He must wear deodorant and shower every day otherwise he starts to smell. He has had a few red bumps on his face but just last week had his first full on spot. No idea if that’s in keeping with his age and puberty or not.

My ds is 14 and going through it. Getting facial hair and sprouting so he is now taller than dh who is 5'10". He has that teen foosty smell and I have to air his bedroom in the morning

My DS is 12 and his voice is so deep. A small tash plus the odd spot and now dry skin. He is a bit bigger than his peers.

I asked him the other night who the girl was on his FaceTime as i could hear a voice whilst he was playing FIFA on the PS.

It was his friend, not a girl.🤭 it seems he’s ahead on the voice bit.

This has been a silly question hasn't it! There's obviously no set 'rules' but do people think j should speak to our gp again. I dont know if I'm being ridiculous or not, DH thinks I am.

DS has pubic/armpit hair, BO and a few little spots so far.

No I wouldn't speak to your gp yet. Puberty takes a few years

kowari · 08/11/2020 18:48

I think it's no signs by 14 when you should be concerned.

If he's only 12 hes unlikely to be at full height.

I have similar worries to you!
My DS is 10. Like yours, he started showing signs at around 8.5 years old - I only knew because he asked me point blank why he seemed to be growing hair down there. Then a few months later he came to me asking if there was anything he could do about his armpits smelling - although I will say they weren’t that bad, just a little bit whiffy after PE. Then there’s other ‘boy’ issues he has, which again, he just point blank asks me about!

He started to get the odd spot around the time he turned 10. He is already taller than anyone else in his class, but still only 5 feet tall. He has size 6 feet though!
So I’m figuring he still has a lot of growing to do, but like you I am concerned he won’t reach the height he would have if puberty had started later.

So I haven’t much useful to add, other than to say that we’re in a similar boat and I understand.

Thanks everyone. I've just done some more googling and I think DS has had premature adrenarch rather than precocious puberty.

I think for any of you with similar concerns there's no harm contacting your gp. Thats what I did although his reassurances obviously fell on deaf ears!
