What the hell happened?

Got a lovely new bottle of Jo Malone Red Roses for my birthday (have had 2 bottles previously, and have used the new bottle..all fine)..put some on for work..at work got this really horrible smell..had a sniff and bloody hell it was me..it had gone really disgustingly sour smelling on my skin. I was totally mortified and had to get some wipes and scrub it off as best as I could..but was really paranoid the rest of my shift.

What on earth happened?

Could someone have been suckered into voting a fake by mistake?

Did you maybe rub hand sanitiser on it?

Deffo not pregnant..wouldn't think it a fake..came in proper Jo Malone bag etc, and have worn it from that bottle before and it was fine..no body lotion or hand sanitiser just Dove deodorant..but honestly it smelled BAD. I was ashamed!

If I have had covid I have been totally asymptomatic..and surely wouldn't smell it?

This happened to me with my bottle of Red Roses but I'd had it a while and left it in direct light which is apparently a no no.
I wonder if the shop had been storing it incorrectly somehow?

It could be. It's a bloody big bottle too. I've put some more on (I'm at home) and will see if it does it again.

I find jo malone tricky. I had the vanilla one and it smelt like vicks vapour rub on me. Though if you’ve had it before that shouldn’t really happen surely?

I have had two small bottles before, and they were fine. This is a new big bottle. I did read a review on Frgarantica where someone thought it smelt like cats piss on them, and their partner had confirmed..so I have always been wary wearing it..and it did smell extremely bad tonight. Shockingly so.

Can you take it back? I’ve only bought a couple of things online from Jo Malone* - is their customer service any good?

It's gone off. If it was a gift the person giving it may have had it for a long time or stored it incorrectly.

All perfume does go off eventually or if stored in too much light

Spray it in your home, on a tissue or something. If it smells ok, then it is YOU turning it!!!

I can't wear perfume on my skin, every perfume smells sour, little bit like stale vomit. I even had blood tests when in my 20s to see if anything showed up, nothing did show up. the doctor then told me lots can't wear perfume on skin, so I wear it on my clothes, have done for years now. Now as I'm much older I now can't wear scented body moisturiser I get a damp smell. So it is definitely to do with changes in skin, sweating/heat from your body that changes perfume scents when we put them on, and as your skin changes yearly we start discovering things we could wear before we can't now.

I do think it was me turning it, but why? That's what I don't understand.. Nothing different to any of the other times I wore it. Def not a regift...and unlikely to have been taken out of the box to be honest.

I'm another person who can't wear perfume directly on skin - when I do, after an hour it gives a musty damp smell and its just bloody horrible.

It might be the chemicals and fats etc on your skin thats causing the 'off' smell

Perhaps they have reformulated the product. I must confess, I have stopped buying JM fragrances completely. I have started purchasing Guerlain Aqua Allegoria products now. (Better sillage and quality).

Had you eaten anything smelly that would come through your pores, garlic, spices etc that may have reacted?
