Do you still have dvds and cds?

We do, we have loads. But I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time we used any of them (with the exception of Christmas films and cds which we use every year) It will have been YEARS ago. Yet I can’t get rid of them!! Help!

To those asking what you do if a film isn’t on Netflix etc, there will always be somewhere to buy it online! However i hate films, dh can normally find what he wants on sky or Amazon prime if not on Netflix and the dc aren’t fussed either way.

BackforGood · 07/11/2020 13:20

I do, and I use them.
DH was mocking me the other day when I uncovered and was playing a bit of a blast from the past - telling me I could get everything on Spotify now, but my point is, this group / that CD weren't on my radar - I was looking along the CD holder and thought 'Wow, blast from the past, not heard them in ages'. Can't do that on Spotify, Alexa, or looking on You Tube - you have to know who it is you are looking to play, to ask for it.

BackforGood · 07/11/2020 13:21

Plus, I need them for the car.

SillyCow6 · 07/11/2020 13:31

We have loads of dvds and cds we use. Cds mostly in the car but also when Im cleaning I'll throw an album on and dont have to keep flicking away from the suggested similar artists that actually I cant stand.
Dh and I watch dvds in the bedroom in the evening quitea lot when tv is shite and the kids have a stack of dvds in their play room that they can play whenever they like and we dont need to pay for a chromecast or new subscription for it.

If we bought all new smart tvs etc then I suppose we might move away from them more but I resent having to pay for a subscription for advert free music. I love working through an album in the right order and singing the first few bars in the gap between songs on an album.
I also hate the idea of paying for something and never owning it - I know we do it with other things but if I add up all the different subscriptions Id need to watch the variety of films we like then we'd be paying an extra 20-30e per month for them all

SillyCow6 · 07/11/2020 13:32

@BackforGood exactly. And I find quite a lot of films Im looking for arent on any of the streaming sites we already have anyway

EvilPea · 07/11/2020 13:42

Yes I still have them and the collection seems to be annoyingly growing!! I don’t have Netflix or Spotify though. I just can’t get on board with this renting life monthly life we are moving too (can’t afford it either!!)

Says me in my rented house Grin

TheSandman · 07/11/2020 13:47

Not everything is on Netflix. Most of our collection isn't.

I hear you. I have a lot of foreign language (ie not in English) films which are nowhere to be seen on any streaming platform I have been on - though they may be in other countries.

But then I'm a total movie buff - I have about 1,500 DVDs (all alphabetised) and if you count in all the TV series and the kids' movies that'll take it up to a good 2000.

It's faster and easier to go pull a disc out and put in in a machine than looking for the thing you want on some platform. And then, when you find it not being sure which version of the film you have found. Original cinema release? extended DVD version? director's cut, etc. etc..

Streaming is useful and I have found stuff on there but for me discs are better.

ohdearmymistake · 07/11/2020 13:56

Yes we do, we still have videos and video player, lots of dvds and player, loads of cds with a player and all cars play them. We still have some of the original vinyls singles and LPs nothing to play them on though.

NoDarling · 07/11/2020 13:58

Yep, still have CDs and DVDs. We still use both too.

Also have video tapes and music cassettes. Our car only has a cassette player and radio so use cassettes daily. The video tapes still get watched too, by our youngest dc. Once they out grow them, they will be binned though!

Also have loads of records but they are just gathering dust in the cupboard.

It still shocks me that buying a new movie on demand can cost more then a dvd. Wtf is that all about? Oh yes you can buy it on demand for 2 days for £15.99 or go get the dvd for £8.99. bloody silliness.

TheSandman · 07/11/2020 14:25

Small record players like this: www.gadgetspeak.com/review/ALDI_Suitcase_LP_Player-870685.html turn up in Lidl and Aldi from time to time. This one even plays 78s ( I have a box of 78s - some really old jazz stuff).

It's funny how some formats caught on and other didn't. Personally I always hated cassettes - too tiny and rattly. Minidiscs were the same though useful in that you could reorder the playlist.

Betamax video was superior to VHS but failed and LaserDiscs were just too BIG and cumbersome - stopping to change the disc/s in the middle of the film like an LP? (Beautiful things though. I have a couple - nothing to play them on but they are just lovely things.)

'I I like to listen to a whole album by one artist'

I’m pretty sure Alexa plays full albums. And with the added bonus of being able to say ‘next’ to the song’s you don’t like....

LynetteScavo · 07/11/2020 14:27

I still have videos and a video player. I don't know when we last used them. Confused

The question wasn't "do you have Alexa?" though was it?
Spudlet · 07/11/2020 14:38

We don’t have any CDs but we do still have a few DVDs. Some are old favourites that we didn’t want to buy again, a couple of educational ones for DS, and some Studio Ghibli films - we just cancelled Netflix and that seems to be the only place you can get those films online. So I’ve been getting our favourites secondhand on eBay.

Our internet can be a bit unreliable for streaming (rural) so it’s good to have offline options too.

jambeforeclottedcream · 07/11/2020 15:14

Yes to both

But don't know if we actually own a CD player anymore

Have DVDs because our internet is patchy so if it conks out and there's nothing on tv then... also not all of my favourite movies are available to be streamed for free. And I cba to rent a movie for £££ on prime when I have it already on a dvd

Thismustbelove · 07/11/2020 15:19

Chicchicchicchiclana

The general gist of the thread is that cds are obsolete due to streaming surely?

SillyCow6 · 07/11/2020 15:25

@Thismustbelove I dont have, and dont want an alexa!!

BackInSeptember · 07/11/2020 15:49

‘I like to listen to a whole album by one artist’

I’m a bit confused by this comment. I’m sure I can listen to a full album on Deezer (presumably Spotify is the same).

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/11/2020 16:00

Fuck's sake this fucking place.

Q. do you still have any CDs?
A. yes
Side comment. well you're doing it wrong.

PhoebeSnow · 07/11/2020 16:11

Yes loads of dvds and cds, we play the cds in the car all the time

Things like The Snow Goose by Paul Galico are impossible to find now, and we enjoy them.

The lovely old children’s series that used to be shown on Sunday teatime, like The Box Of Delights, Tom’s Midnight Garden etc, and stuff like Bagpuss, and Mary Mungo and Midge, and The Singing , Ringing Tree which was the last Christmas gift I got from my late dad so wouldn’t be get rid of that.
I cant replace those easily and we still have a player, not everything I would like to watch is streamed.

PhoebeSnow · 07/11/2020 16:14

Still have loads of vinyl as well and a record player, glad I kept them because I like the artwork which isn’t the same on cds and some are signed.

WanderingMilly · 07/11/2020 16:20

I do. I don't stream anything, TV is Freeview only.
I love DVDs for documentaries, I have a DVD player, it's excellent quality but small enough to take to bed....I play a DVD when I can't sleep at night.
I still have a CD player and lots of favourite music on CDs. In fact, so does my car......it was new last February but came with an integral CD player so I was delighted I could still play my usual music!

PhoebeSnow · 07/11/2020 16:23

I’ve even got some audio and old comedy radio shows on tape. My CD player has radio, CD and a cassette player and it still works well.

Cahu58 · 07/11/2020 17:22

Still have CD's but rarely use them and gave away all the DVD's on Facebook marketplace...

happymummy12345 · 07/11/2020 17:23

Yes
