Does anyone sponsor a child?

I remember my grandparents doing this when I was young and think it is a way I can give practical help. Does anyone sponsor a child? Is one charity better than another? I want to give a girl a start in life but don't know where to start - any ideas?
Thanks

I've sponsored a child in Uganda through SOS children's villages for ten years, at the time I looked into a lot of the different charities and I liked the ethos of this one best.

I used to sponsor a child with Plan. It was lovely in some ways but I stopped because I didn't agree with the spending priorities- they were doing a campaign to provide all kids with birth certificates which is a good cause, but the same kids were dying because they didn't have access to clean drinking water so I wanted my money to be used for biggest priorities first. I've looked into others over the years but tbh a lot seem very religious and with their own agendas

Yes I sponsor two children with Plan, did a third but she turned 18 and apparently that's it?!
Got regular updates and photos and what have you. I would recommend it.

We a two primary school children through International Needs which is a Christian organisation which we know well. My daughter started sponsoring a child through another charity but then lost her job so we now have three. I think gets might be Unisef or something similar.

I have sponsored two children over the last 18 years and before that my parents did.
I sponsor through Compassion. In 2005, I went out to the Philippine’s and visited two Compassion schools and they were both amazing. One was this bright beacon on a rubbish dump in Manilla and the other was in a village in the middle of nowhere. They gave sponsored children real opportunities (and daily food) that they would not have got otherwise.
