Le Creuset pot is very old, gone a bit rusty, and now badly scratched the hob - what affordable replacement can I buy?

Absolutely love my big le Creuset pot, especially this time of year with stews.

It’s gone a bit rusty in places and I used it yesterday and this morning notice it’s left dreadful scratches on my hob 😭

So I think it’s time to replace

However this was a much wished for present and I cannot afford to replace with another le Creuset pot.

Can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative?

Sainsbury's

I've had a few Sainsbury's cast iron pots. They are cheap, but the enamel chips very easily. I was looking at Procook the other day. Their pans look good and are priced somewhere between Le Creuset and Sainsbury's. I've bought other stuff from them which has been good quality, so I'm thinking of giving them a go.

Sainsburys are awful quality. Mine lasted 2 years.
I've used my lecreuset almost every day for the last 15 years. I thought the guarantee excluded wear and tear though?

I bought this shallow casserole dish from John Lewis and I absolutely love it. It's much cheaper than LC equivalent and has lifetime guarantee.

Grooticle · 06/11/2020 10:24

They offer a lifetime guarantee, so they should replace it.

Onedropbeat · 06/11/2020 10:40

@Grooticle that would be amazing. But it’s vintage, probably from the late 70’s

I can’t imagine them honouring a guarantee on something that old

It’s the biggest size F they did and I’ve just looked at how much they are new. £290! 😱

I’m not even too sure why it is rusty. It’s just around the rim.

I’ve always taken good care of it but it’s just aged

It's a lifetime guarantee.

Grooticle · 06/11/2020 10:44

Give it a try! They say you need proof of purchase (which of course you won’t have) but their customer service team is pretty helpful, if you phone and explain it was a gift they may replace it or give you a voucher towards replacement. They do say the guarantee applies for the whole lifetime of the original owner so being from the 70s should be fine.

Onedropbeat · 06/11/2020 11:11

good plan.
Not too sure they’ll be open with lockdown but it’s worth a try

I have an ancient LeCreuset, a several-year-old Sainsburys and a newish Procook. They are all good in my view. I'm not sure Sainsburys do the very big ones though.

Mrbay · 06/11/2020 11:29

If they don't replace, ProCook have the same. I brought my friend one and she now uses her ProCook over her Le Creuset.

Onedropbeat · 06/11/2020 11:29

This is what it looks like. Doesn’t look the best Grin

I got mine replaced under the guarantee I linked you to.

adagio · 06/11/2020 14:13

I would try the guarantee first (you gave nothing to lose!) then if that fails, maybe try doing it up?

My le Creuset has a flat base, yours looks ribbed so not sure how to fix that. I’ve used scrubby scouters in my flat one.

For the rusty rim I’ve used Brillo pad in the past, then lightly oiled and it recovered fine.

For the inside enamel le creuset do a cleaner which is like a posh ajax cream cleaner that brings it up a treat.

copperoliver · 06/11/2020 15:05

Contact them about the guarantee and if that doesn't work I wouldn't replace it with anything other than le creuset you won't get the quality from anything else and they won't last as long. I've had mine over 20 years and still going strong. X

copperoliver · 06/11/2020 15:07

Also if they don't replace it. They will repair it. X

I shall report back
