Where to make upgrades

As a result of a recent promotion, and paying off a loan, I suddenly have a lot more disposable income.

Most of it will go into savings, but I realise I haven’t upgraded a lot of my belongings since I bought my first home, fifteen years ago!! Most of it is fairly cheap. I also notice that my friends have much nIcer things, and most have lots of stuff from wedding gifts etc.

I just replaced my cutlery and crockery, but what else is worth pushing the boat out a little for? What little luxuries or better quality homeware have you felt is worth it?

My pots and pans are pretty cheap, but seem to do the job okay. Maybe a new mattress? Again mine is a cheap one, bought 15 years ago.

I realise this is a stupid thread, but I live alone, in Lockdown and Have too much time on my hands - finish work at 7pm, go to bed at 10pm , nothing in between😊😊😊

Yes to a new mattress, and some nice bedding to go with it.

Ideasplease322 · 05/11/2020 20:01

Oh nice bedding! I like plain white, I suppose I could go for a good thread count - does this make a difference?

I’d get a lovely posh mattress, a big bed if you want one/ have the space and nice bedding.

A comfy new sofa
Some outside seating for summer?

TheSpottedZebra · 05/11/2020 20:05

Yes to bed. Think how much time you spend there -make it perfect!

What do you like to do?
What niggles do you have?

RandomMess · 05/11/2020 20:06

Pots and pans - buy a few nice ones in the sizes you use the most.

Nice bedding - Egyptian high count thread with satin finish, you'll never go back!

Buy some home furnishing/accessories that you truly love whether a throw or a lamp.

You spend 1/3 of your life in bed (unless you have small DCGrin) it should be wonderful and comfy and a bit luxurious if you can.

Trut · 05/11/2020 20:06

Congrats on your promotion💐 I agree, a good mattress and good pillows are essential

vinoandbrie · 05/11/2020 20:06

White Company bed linen and mattress topper. Definitely a new mattress as you say. New towels?

Ideasplease322 · 05/11/2020 20:15

Towels are a great idea.

Also outdoor furniture for next spring.

I will take a look at the white company now.

I probably need to gradually upgrade most things😊. It’s just hard to know what brands are with the extra money.

I think many many things are better if you spend more money. But each of us have different priorities so whatever annoys you most at the moment is the thing you should upgrade first. But only if you've found something to replace it that you love.

But sensibly you should probably do basic infrastructure stuff first like check the roof, electrics, boiler, drains, etc.

Good bed, amazing pillows, I’ve got a Hungarian goose down on which cost more than I like to admit but it’s amazing! If I could I would get a matching duvet too. I’m also all white on bedding, thread count, but also details like texture. Do you need/want a new bed frame? Rugs for bedroom?
Personally I’d start with one room at a time:

bedroom if you don’t want to decorate what about bedside table/lamp/lampshade/mirror.

bathroom new towels, shower curtain?, bath mat, upgrade soap (I love REN shower gel)

kitchen mugs? Tea caddy? Tea towels? Draining board? Chopping board? Good kitchen knives?

living room sofa? cushions, rug, artwork, throws, lighting? Plants, flowers (could you get a flower delivery)?, candles? Coffee table?

Could you get get some new lovely Xmas decorations?

I love this sort of thing, please post pics of ideas if you want? What’s you current style? What do you want you home to look like?
