How terrifying is Haunting of Hill House? What else can I watch? Run out of good TV shows!

DH and I have run out of good TV shows to watch. You name it, we’ve watched it (we have two disabled kids and don’t have much of a social life so TV is it 😂)

Vaguely considering this since everyone tells me how awesome it is, but I am a wimp and don’t want to be traumatised.

We watched Bly Manor which obviously wasn’t very scary.... but some bits did actually scare me (I’m not good with mirrors!).

If it’s liable to make me wet myself, what else would you suggest which is perhaps less widely seen but is great?

We have Netflix and Prime, and I’m sure we could find things which aren’t on there too...

Our favourite series include The Shield, Better Call Saul, Fargo, Barry, documentaries like The Jinx, Making A Murderer etc...

Vaguely considering The Leftovers which we haven’t seen yet, and possibly Succession.

Any other suggestions?

I found it creepy, disturbing, and really sad rather than scary

BrianWankum · 05/11/2020 17:17

Succession is brilliant, watch it.
The West Wing is now on All4 if you have haven't seen it yet.
I feel like I'm running out too!
Currently watching/recently watched Teachers, Glow, Cobra Kai!

SinkGirl · 05/11/2020 17:17

That’s good to know - I guess so much depends on your own idea of what’s scary too. I’m often fine when I watch things but it’s another story when I have to get up for the loo in the night 😂

Haunting at blye manor
American horror story (very long set of series. )

SinkGirl · 05/11/2020 17:18

Thanks for the recommendation on Succession, will do!

Rest I’ve seen, except for Cobra Kai which I couldn’t get through - I realise most people love it though!

Seen them! Although actually there may be a series of AHS we haven’t seen, but I haven’t really enjoyed one since about series 4 😬

I wouldn't say it terrifying, there's a few jump scares but for me the real horror was how heartbreaking it all was in the end.

H1978 · 05/11/2020 17:48

Not seen it myself but the alienist on Netflix is supposed to be good

Juanbablo · 05/11/2020 18:19

It's scarier than Bly, sad too. But a very good show.

Warmworm · 05/11/2020 18:22

Ozark, Dead to me, Schitts Creek

mosscarpet · 05/11/2020 18:24

I found it comparable to Bly in terms of scariness. I really enjoyed both Bly and hill house

SinkGirl · 05/11/2020 18:56

Hmm, maybe I will try it. See if I can hack it 😬

Love Ozark and Dead To Me was fun. Can’t get through Schitt’s Creek though, maybe I need to try again as I know it’s widely loved - I should probably give it more of a chance.

It’s scary but really good, much better than Bly Manor imo.

Santa Clarita Diet is hilarious and surprisingly heart warming, some body horror but mostly played for laughs. Working Moms is also really funny

Saucery · 05/11/2020 19:35

Have you seen Sneaky Pete? Loved it!

Trailing1 · 05/11/2020 19:42

The Handmaid's Tale on Amazon Prime, there are three series. It's a bit of a psychological mind fuck but it's so bloody good.
That said it may not be your cup of tea, it can be a wee bit slow in places. Anyway, I hope you find something to watch x

I absolutely loved haunting of hill house no recommend it.

I am an absolute wuss and don’t really watch scary things but I watched this on my own and enjoyed it.

I did scream maybe once or twice but it’s a good story line.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 05/11/2020 20:36

I watched the first episode and then wanted to cry when I needed a wee in the night. Haven’t gone back to it (but I scare easy and have an overactive imagination!).

Currently watching Dark on Netflix, it’s subtitled but so gripping from the get go. Also loved The OA and Sinner.

We did watch all of Schitts Creek but I really don’t get the hype. Think I laughed out loud twice!

SinkGirl · 05/11/2020 21:11

Okay, one episode down and not terrified, but I expect it will get worse!

Have seen all of these - I loved season 1 of Sneaky Pete so much but couldn’t get into S2 so will have to go back to it.
