I stole somebody else's baby

Name changed as outing.

This was yesterday. In supermarket with DD 3 year old DS and 14 week DD. DH had the pushchair & I had the trolley. We were in a bit of a rush so DH said he'd go get a few bits and we'd meet in the middle. Off he goes and takes the pushchair with him. DS stayed with me. Had a quick look at the baby clothes for DD. Left trolley at end of aisle. Wandered up another couple of aisles then turned round and automatically put my hands on the pushchair that was there. Started walking off and DS pipes up "that's not my sister" I looked down and realised DD was now wearing boys clothes and had aged by about 6 months. I panicked and returned baby to the aisle I stole him from. Thankfully I'd only got to the end of the aisle and turned to go into the next aisle before DS said something. The other mum never even noticed!

A woman once attempted to walk out of h&m with my ds1 when he was a baby. Luckily I did realise and ran after her shouting 'give me back my baby!' until she realised her mistake Grin. I did see the funny side once the initial panic had gone!

I also once lost ds2 when he was a baby. I was lying on the bed having a rest and heard the baby crying but I was so sleep-deprived I just couldn't remember where I'd left him! I was in a total panic! Eventually I worked out that the crying baby sounds were coming from a neighbour's garden and ds2 had been sound asleep on my chest the entire time Blush.

I was once out running and saw my dad who lives nearby also out for a jog so I decided to hide behind a tree and leap out at him. It wasn't my dad.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/11/2020 16:42

I can't compete with OP, but did once pack the car for a fairly long trip, checking several times I'd included everything

Fortunately we'd only got about 5 miles before I realised the one thing not included was DS, left behind sitting in the kitchen in his car seat

Kynance cove car park 2012.
Both of our young teen boys went missing. DH heard a distant cry of "Dad" and spotted them arguing with 2 teachers who were trying to make them get on the school coach back to London.
TBF they look nothing like brothers.Grin

TheChosenTwo · 05/11/2020 16:47

@tmh88 very rarely do things make me properly belly laugh but that’s really made me laugh Grin

cucumbber · 05/11/2020 16:48

This is brilliant.

Not quite the same but my DFIL shouted at his two children, during a sports match, to "SIT DOWN!". Everyone in the while stand sat down straight away. He was an impressive man!

LifesNotEnidBlyton · 05/11/2020 16:51

That's really funny! At least your DS wasn't all Hm, a brother instead if a sister.... I'll keep schtum. Unless it was more OMG, I don't want two babies at home!.

Puppymummy20 · 05/11/2020 16:57

When I was about 12 I was sitting in the back of the car with my brother and my parents were in the front. We stopped at a motorway service station for some petrol and I slipped out to use the loo. As I came out and started walking back to the car it wasn’t there. I saw it in the distance start to disappear down the slip road, do an emergency stop, and reverse fast back up the slip road towards me (they’d got a fair way down). I’ve never let my dad forget it

Having been quite obsessed by the Take a Break threads recently, I really thought this was one of those shit headlines and actually, you hadn't stolen a baby but had stolen a baby (name or something...)

Some of these a so funny, especially the lady sitting in some randomer's car and the whole audience sitting down in the sports stadium!

Kljnmw3459 · 05/11/2020 17:01

That's quite funny OP, glad it wasn't anything more serious!

I had a lady try to steal my toddler once, or my toddler try to steal someone's mum. He was walking ahead of me and not paying attention and just grabbed a ladys hand thinking it was me. The lady wasn't paying attention either and thought it was her child. They walked happily together holding hands for a while until the lady finally noticed that it wasn't her child lol. I had a good laugh about it. She saw the funny side too.

guineapig1 · 05/11/2020 17:03

This thread made me giggle. I once grabbed someone else’s child similar as they came out of the big communal shower after swimming lessons and started to towel dry them. My glasses were a bit steamed up and the child was of a similar size and had the same kind of hair as my child. The other child’s parents thought it was hilarious!!

bananaskinsnomnom · 05/11/2020 17:03

This thread has made me laugh out loud! So funny.

I have been told a story about myself which I sort of remember but not really, me and family were at the the beach, I was either 2 or 3 and a mum called out for her child to sit down for the picnic - well the child had the same name as me so I went and sat down on their picnic mat and helped myself to a sandwich! My mum was mortified but apparently the family found it hilarious when I said it was my name too!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 05/11/2020 17:04

I hope you disinfected the pushchair handle before giving it back!

FFS, catch yourself on!

I hope that you did a thorough assessment to see if the new baby was preferable to your own, before going back .....

@IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere

My daughter as an older teenager was nearly "kidnapped" by a foreign language teacher on the London Underground. In fairness she looked very young for her age and there was a huge group of young teens with some very harassed staff who tried to hustle her on the train with the rest of their group. Her refusal to join them wasn't helped by looking very young for her age.
My late 20s DD is also young looking. She works as a tax consultant for a very big firm. She once arrived at a hotel to host a seminar for prospective summer interns. The reception staff did not believe she was running the event and insisted on looking for her name in the list of 18 year old delegates. Since they couldn’t find her (obv) they refused to let her in. Whilst she was rummaging for her bag looking for something to prove her employment status one of the in-house AV techs came up to ask ‘ Where do you want the projector set up Ms Cobweb?’ and the problem was solved.

She had tried to explain to reception that she was running the event, the room booking had her contact details etc but because she’s so baby faced they didn’t take her seriously!

I hope you disinfected the pushchair handle before giving it back!

I took this as a joke not a someone having a go

So did I!!.

fashu · 05/11/2020 17:07

Oh my gosh! i never ever leave my pushchair unattended. I have walked away but I've always been looking at it. Even if my DS isn't in it because nowadays they are so expensive, wouldn't be surprised if people just take unattended prams.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 05/11/2020 17:14

So did I, thus I replied with something also not serious Blush

Bikingbear · 05/11/2020 17:15

Some of these are hilarious!

Its really sweet when older siblings look out for the baby!

FurrySlipperBoots · 05/11/2020 17:16

@LittleDoritt

Hahaha, I bet they thought twice before playing up in public again!

Sunnydaysstillhere · 05/11/2020 17:21

Didn't steal him but once made a little boy crying telling him off for whining for a toy in Woolies thinking it was ds!!
Blush

FrenchBoule · 05/11/2020 17:21

@LittleDoritt

I've never stolen someone else's child but I have roared "Will you pack it in!" to my two squabbling children, only to remember that mine were actually at home with their Dad and these, horrified little ones were strangers to me.
OMG,that made me howl 😂😂😂

Bet the parent was a bit confused as to why they were so quiet 😂😂😂

Mochudubh · 05/11/2020 17:26

I used to have a very maternal GSD who would try to pick up puppies if she met them and carry them home.

I got wise to it a and kept her out of range if I saw someone coming with a puppy but the first time she just casually picked up a pup by the scruff of the neck and carried on walking. Thankfully the owner was fine (so was the pup, she was a lovely gentle dog).

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 05/11/2020 17:26

We went to a super heroes themed birthday party when DS was 4. I saw a small superman on the bouncy castle with shoes on and proceeded to tell him to get off at once and how many times have I told you to take your shoes off

Spoiler: it wasnt ds
The other mum laughed thank God

ArabellaScott · 05/11/2020 17:33

I put my daughter in the back of the car once, right into the lap of a very shocked woman. It wasn't my car.

Littleseeds11 · 05/11/2020 17:35

This thread has made me smile!

It has taken me back to when ds2 was four days old and I bravely took him and ds1 then 3 to nct playgroup. I was so proud of myself. We had a lovely afternoon, ds2 slept on the playmats in the baby section being coo-ed over whilst I had tea and spent some much needed 1:1 time with ds1.

I put on ds1 coat and we left holding hands, I was thinking of how lovely the afternoon was when ds chipped up five minutes later "why have we left ds2 at playgroup?"

I hadn't realised I had left the baby and pram in the church hall. Oops!
