What happens if Biden is unwell?

PurplePIG1 · 04/11/2020 23:32

I feel very sorry for Biden and no idea why the Democrats couldn't find someone more suitable. He called Trump 'George', mistook his granddaughter for his sadly deceased son and seemed very forgetful when Obama introduced him.

I'm not sure his health is up to being president, some people suggest possible alzheimers. What happens if he has to stand down in a few weeks for health reasons? Another election?

Poor man Sad

It's pretty low to misconstrue the words of a father about his dead child and that child's school child.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/11/2020 00:34

Sorry the school in that sentence was auto suggestion.

user1471565182 · 05/11/2020 00:36

People deliberately leaving out the fact he was talking to an interviewer called george and the footage was edited to make it seem like he wasnt there

user1471565182 · 05/11/2020 00:37

Anyway like I said on another thread I suspect Harris will stand for his 2nd term instead

Allington · 05/11/2020 00:44

Same as what would happen if Trump was unwell during his term, the VP would stand in.

Inkpaperstars · 05/11/2020 00:54

The Biden verbal slip ups have been taken out of context. On top of which he has always been gaffe prone, going back decades.

Media manipulation counts for a lot...JFK had a cultivated image of health that could not have been further from the truth. During one congressional campaign before he even ran for President he was stretchered while out of sight during the campaign and at one point I believe the last rites were administered. He was a young president seen to embody youth and vibrancy who only got through each day on a cocktail of drugs.

There was a large field of candidates in the democratic primary including many younger candidates and including Kamala Harris, but for whatever reason they could not break through and Biden won the nomination.

But yes, in answer to your question it is the VP.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 05/11/2020 00:57

No, he didn't mistake Trump for Bush - that was dishonest video editing by Trump's campaign. See, eg www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/10/26/no-biden-did-not-confuse-george-w-bush-donald-trump/

Haven't checked out the other allegations but wouldn't be astonished that they came from the same dishonest source.

Very, very disingenuous.

I would save the "poor man" for the one without an apparent soul. Who is not of sound mind. And who is only four years younger than Biden, anyway.

JamieLeeCurtains · 05/11/2020 01:00

The harsh reality is, in the USA in 2020, it's extremely likely that Biden was the only person who could beat Trump.

It's not right; and it's not ok.

Yelloripe · 05/11/2020 01:00

Under the 25th amendment the president can be removed from office if not deemed fit. Nancy Pelosi has introduced legislation to put in place a bipartisan committee to assess the President's ability to carry out his duties.

Yelloripe · 05/11/2020 01:01

Sorry forgot to add. The vice president will then step into office

SheepandCow · 05/11/2020 01:01

If the VP takes over, I assume a new VP is chosen?

GlowingOrb · 05/11/2020 01:02

The Vice President’s role is very limited: being leader of the senate and breaking rare ties. The Vice President is really just the president in waiting. He or she stays apprised of current business and is ready to step in at a moment’s notice. When Kennedy was killed, Johnson was sworn in on the plane back from Texas.

GlowingOrb · 05/11/2020 01:03

If the vice-president becomes president, the new president chooses a successor.

SheepandCow · 05/11/2020 01:04

So if something happened to both the President and the VP, Pelosi takes over?

Ivysaur · 05/11/2020 01:08

Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/11/2020 01:10

It's miserably depressing that the only way the US can have a woman president is by default. Really shocking actually.

Perhaps Kim Kardashian should run instead of Kanye West in 2024?
Yelloripe · 05/11/2020 01:22

SheepandCow yes exactly that, The speaker of the house would step in a President

Giantguineapig · 05/11/2020 01:46

Trump is almost the same age, and appears far more unhealthy.

user1471565182 · 05/11/2020 01:51

Inkspapers have you seen 1945 and the Wheelchair President (awful title I know) it was a really fascinating documentary about FDR's illness.

MouseholeCat · 05/11/2020 01:56

OP you need to interrogate your sources because you're eating up right-wing disinformation.

I live in the US. I'd have preferred a younger and more liberal candidate, but ultimately Biden won the primaries decisively. He won 51% of around 38 million votes cast in the Democratic primaries.

If you watched him in the live debates and town halls you can see that he is sharp and extremely capable. I have no doubt that he will be a highly capable President.

Aside from that, there is clear protocol for handling a President being unfit for office and Kamala Harris is extraordinarily capable.

I don't think I have seen that one, I will look it up..thank you!
ArcheryAnnie · 05/11/2020 02:29

Biden has had a stammer his whole life, which, if you are ignorant about how that can manifest, you could confuse with being forgetful, because speech may not always go smoothly.

I'd rather have a president who has largely overcome a stammer than one who is a lazy, megalomaniac, narcissist liar.

shamalidacdak · 05/11/2020 02:33

We get KAMALA! Yes finally. A Black woman in charge.
