Help me to decide whether to go to A&E in the morning

Briefly...have now had period for 20 days straight. Seems to be getting heavier as the days go by...bright red, no clots, not like normal period blood, used 9 pads in a 10 hour shift on Monday.

Am 43. Quick history of recent menstrual issues as follows:

  • Age 36 - periods become thin, pale pink, last three or four days.
  • Age 38-42 - periods disappear entirely.
  • Sept 2019 - periods return, light and pale pink again, last three or four days.
  • Last four months - considerable discomfort and bloating around ovulation in left ovary with masses of egg white mucus being produced over a two week period. Over the last six weeks ovulation appears to fail, no egg white mucus produced, appears to try again, huge bloating, constant need to urinate, once again fails to produce ewm, period comes.

20 days later, it's still going. Over the last five days, tenderness again in left ovary area...uncomfortable to press on lower abdomen. Strong need to urinate every half hour. Dehydrated. Fast heart rate. Nausea. Dizzy on standing. Sleeping 12 hours a day when not working.

Triaged by emergency clinic over the phone as no gp appointments left. Recommends A&E. Would have to get bus, 12 mile journey, really can't be arsed. Fell asleep sitting up at the dining table whilst considering this - that was 11am, woke up at 2pm. Went back to bed for a few hours (day off today and tomorrow.)

What are the chances of this period stopping soon? We are a tier 3 area and whilst I'm not bothered about the virus itself per se, I really don't want to rock up at A&E whimpering that "me periods mekking me reyt gippy sicky like" in the middle of a sodding pandemic.

Can any lurking medics or people with similar experiences advise?

My thanks in advance.

PS: family history of early menopause (40's)

Yes I am trying to drink plenty but my lips and mouth are always dry. I am craving salty stuff for some reason. I have just weighed myself and have lost 3kg in three weeks...not trying to.

There is no one here other than my cat but she's an excellent nurse so no worries there! Am going to sleep now, will get up early and see what's happening. Thanks to all for advice.

Sounds pretty serious to me, especially if blood is different to usual period blood.

Get on Facebook and ask someone local for a lift. People are happy to help these days.

cautiouscovidity · 04/11/2020 20:41

Bleeding after so long without periods wouldn't usually be considered menstruation and should be investigated as a matter of urgency. Yes, go to A&E or persuade your GP to make an urgent referral to a gynaecologist.

Well Ok
But please don't be a martyr about this. It really does sound like a properly serious problem and I think you must see some kind of Dr face to face tomorrow latest and get your obs checked at a minimum.

Cailleach · 04/11/2020 20:47

Thanks Doug, do appreciate your help. It's bloody awful timing is all, what with lockdown etc...what a year. Oh also I have aching pains down the back of my left leg since the internal tenderness started a few days ago, I forgot that bit.

Right I very definitely am going to sleep now, nn all and thanks

God, OP! I hope it's not cancer. Not wanting to scare you unnecessarily but you really need medical attention ASAP.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 04/11/2020 20:49

I would definitely go to a and e. With the pain and all the bleeding they'll need to scan you and a GP cant do that. To me you sound properly unwell.

Meanameicallmyself20 · 04/11/2020 20:50

Hey I would definitely go to A&E with this- heavy bleeding like this for a long time is serious. Not wanting to scare you but I had a haemorrhage (due to Mc) and my blood pressure dropped really really low (70/50) and I had IV fluids... was close to a transfusion too... please go you sound really unwell. Take care xxx

BlackeyedSusan · 04/11/2020 20:54

sod going to bed, go to a and e. lots of blood loss is serious.

wintertime6 · 04/11/2020 20:55

It sounds like you were menopausal as you didn't have a period for over a year. So this would be classed as post menopausal bleeding and would be a red flag referral to be seen within 2 weeks. I don't think A&E will do much for you unless you need urgent treatment for pain/blood loss.

You need to call your GP first thing and get referred.

Plussizejumpsuit · 04/11/2020 20:55

Ooh that sounds heavy so I would seek medical attention soon. But why would you go to A&E rather than get a s as me day GP appointment? Even if they're just doing telephone consultations they can see you if needed later in the day most places. As I imagine it would be needed in your case.

AriettyHomily · 04/11/2020 20:56

If you can wait until the morning it is neither an accident or emergency. Walk in clinic or urgent care?

titchy · 04/11/2020 20:58

Heavy bleeding, ovarian pain, nerve pain (compression?), tachy, exhaustion. Honestly get to A and E tonight Sad

AuntieStella · 04/11/2020 21:01

Your emergency phone triage system has told you to go to A&E

So sodding well go.

And make sure you tell them your full symptomology - you have a number of symptoms covering a several important body systems. This isn't solely a period issue as you describe it at present

RUOKHon · 04/11/2020 21:01

Yes I think you should go to A&E. especially since you have been told to by medical professionals. Can’t you jump in an Uber?

justasking111 · 04/11/2020 21:01

You have ignored advice from emergency services. You have ignored advice from a doctor above. I really do not know why you asked for advice to be honest. I suspect you are very ill.

Marshyellow · 04/11/2020 21:03

So many red flags, get yourself to A&E OP. I would usually say GP as they can refer on, but if you're having the tenderness in your leg etc you need to be seen asap, and then if you need further appointments etc they might recommend going via GP.

JJsDinerWaffles · 04/11/2020 21:04

@Pickypolly

Investigating via GP referral to Gynae specialists, probably as a fast track. Op needs investigations so the route for this is GP.

Our local A&E have a post on face book currently asking people to only go if life threatening injury is present due to “unprecedented pressures”.
What can A&E do ?
Op will be waiting to be seen probably on a corridor for hours and hours to be told to go to her GP..
It doesn’t sound like OP has sought her GP s advice at all during a quite long history of gynae issues. Now wants to go to A&E. this isn’t appropriate.

She doesn’t ‘want to’ go to A and E - she’s been advised to!
MindyStClaire · 04/11/2020 21:04

OP I never ever post on these threads, but please don't go to sleep, go to A&E.

tenlittlecygnets · 04/11/2020 21:05

You should seek medical attention for any unusual bleeding, and if you had no periods for five years, why are you bleeding now? Not normal, and needs urgent investigation. Hugs.

SunbathingDragon · 04/11/2020 21:06

If you are planning on waiting until the morning, then just call your GP surgery first thing for an emergency appointment instead.

Theredjellybean · 04/11/2020 21:06

It sounds nasty but is neither an accident or emergency.
You'll get maybe a blood test for anaemia is you're lucky.
However what you absolutely Do need is your own gp to refer you on the two weeks wait rule to gynae.
Please call them back tmr first thing and say that under NICE guidelines you neec an urgent 2 WEEK Wait referral.
If your periods stopped for four yrs (I presume you did not have anorexia) you went through early menopause. Your gp should have tested for this.
You now have post menaupasal bleeding and other symptoms that could indicate something serious.
Whatever you may read in papers etc.. The nhs is working and your gp needs to be sorting this out urgently.
You may need to get tough with the. But they will be the way to get referred to gynae.
Remember the thing to say is " I have poet menaupasal vaginal bleeding and that according to NICE is an automatic criteria for a two week referral to gynaecology"

SonjaMorgan · 04/11/2020 21:07

I had heavy bleeding for 4 months and intense pain, on and off, in the area of my ovary. A&E did a blood test that came back clear and sent me home. I had to wait for a referral through my GP.

All that being said I would go. Can you get a lift?

Theredjellybean · 04/11/2020 21:07

post... Not poet

Incrediblytired · 04/11/2020 21:07

You need to hassle your gp - threaten to go to a&e and they’ll magic an appointment
