Do I want a kindle fire ....?

Looking at the kindle fires and just not sure if that is the right option or if I should go for a different tablet with the kindle app.

Am looking for something that would enable a dyslexic teenager to view graphic novels but also to access books using text to speech, was thinking about signing up for kindle unlimited which is why I started looking into the fires

Budget is not unlimited and will not stretch anywhere near ipads

Can anyone offer a suggestion or anything to definitely avoid please?

I have an old Android mini tablet that's just a bit bigger than a standard kindle and while it is a few years old, it still works fine. I use it for looking at kindle cookbooks and catch up TV. I would have thought something like this would be more useful/flexible than a kindle fire. Something like:

The Fire is a bit limited - it's built down to a price, and it's hard to get Google Play on it. If you're entirely within Amazon's Kindle-and-Comixology ecosystem it'll be okay though.

You would be better off with a two year old 10" Samsung than a new Fire for the same price though. Better hardware, more flexible.

Fair enough, you have pretty much confirmed what I was thinking when I was reading up - will stop being seduced by the price tag :) thanks

I love my Kindle Fire HD! It's about 4 years old but I watch Netflix and iPlayer on it, plus YouTube, Google the hell out of it every night, got a huge stash of books on it. I'd be lost without it.

HillaryWhitney · 04/11/2020 17:05

No they are slow and shit.

If you want to browse the internet buy an iPad. If you want to read books buy a Kindle paperwhite.

dayswithaY · 04/11/2020 17:42

OP said her budget won't stretch to an iPad.

HillaryWhitney · 04/11/2020 22:15

Oh sorry

Love my fire, use it for kindle, internet, netflix, BBC sounds. Bought one for parents. Worth getting in black Friday sale as they normally half the price on them.

NannyR · 04/11/2020 22:31

I like my kindle fire (not sure which one it is, it's one of the bigger ones). I use it for internet browsing, shopping, youtube, netflix, Pinterest, email etc, it works great for what I need it for. I don't like reading ebooks on it though - I much prefer the screen on my paperwhite for books.

lostinlego · 04/11/2020 22:39

I have a dyslexic teenager too who loves his kindle fire I think he has the 10inch one now but has had a smaller one in the past. He uses it for comics, books, audible Netflix, you tube and browsing the web. He's never had a problem with it being slow or not having the Google store, there are plenty of aps on the Amazon store.

TheBitterBoy · 04/11/2020 22:56

Love my kindle fire. I got chrome and the Google play store on it, its very easy to do. I don't find it slow, use it for watching TV, Internet, reading, it's great value.

BettaSplenden · 04/11/2020 22:57

I have a kindle fire and love it. Lots of options for changing colours etc to make reading easier. Plenty of storage space for books etc. I also use it for watching prime, I player and Netflix. Internet is quicker then my phone. There is the odd game etc that isn't on kindle but for reading it's great. Of it was purely just for reading the paperwhite is meant to be the best ereader in thier range.

AldiAisleofCrap · 04/11/2020 23:01

Kindle fires are much better than they used to be.

AldiAisleofCrap · 04/11/2020 23:01

@AbsolCatly wait till Black Friday though.

@dayswithaY

OP said her budget won't stretch to an iPad.
There's a lot of choice inbetween a kindle fire (£50) and an iPad (£300+?).

Picking a kindle sized device will probably be cheaper than a full sized iPad. If the OP is able to spend £100-150 on an android tablet, she's probably going to get something much better than a kindle fire.
