Has anyone here actually read Eat Pray Love?

It sounds like such vacuous, privileged shite, but it has some good reviews, more than I would've expected. But I know it's ridiculous to slate a book I've never even read. I almost want to read it to see how bad it is.

OP posts:
Anoisagusaris · 04/11/2020 12:45

Read it years ago, I enjoyed it.

ShirleyPhallus · 04/11/2020 12:46

It is utterly shite. Not as shite as the film, but shite.

Not as shite as One Day mind. That is the worst book I’ve ever had the misfortune of putting in my eyes. Truly truly crap.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 04/11/2020 12:46

I enjoyed the book - it’s fairly well written and she describes the countries beautifully.

The movie is beyond shite.

MinnieMountain · 04/11/2020 12:46

If you’ve got a Kindle you can download a free sample. I did and found it to be self-indulgent tosh.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/11/2020 12:46

I enjoyed the book but hated the movie.

RunningKatie · 04/11/2020 12:47

I hated it. Thought it was
self-indulgent drivel Smile
I suspect it's a marmite book, I know other people who found it inspiring!

unmarkedbythat · 04/11/2020 12:50

No, I don't engage in that form of deliberate self harm any more. Life is too short to waste reading bullshit.

jennywhitehorses · 04/11/2020 12:50

She went to stay in an ashram in India. She was spending most of her time with and getting advice from a man from Texas. He was just a visitor to the ashram like her. Why would you go all the way to India then take all this new age rubbish from someone from Texas?

HavfrueDenizKisi · 04/11/2020 12:58

@ShirleyPhallus

God yes! One Day was terrible. Cannot understand the love that book and subsequent shite film gets so much love.

Attempted to read it OP but gave up early. Ditto film.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 04/11/2020 12:58

That was a little garbled but you get my point!!

Blueshmoo · 04/11/2020 13:01

Agree with all the negative reviews above, utter drivel. Then I recently read 'the signature of all things' which I loved and couldn't believe it was the same author!!!

citycitycity · 04/11/2020 13:09

It’s not my type of book at all, but I loved it. I also really like her book in writing.

Take it at face value though - it’s very self indulgent. If you do a bit of reading about the author and the relationships she ends and starts in the book you’ll see how vacuous it all is but it’s a good example of how we all see ourselves. She is the hero of her own story, even if the rest of us can look at her and think she’s a bit of a shit.

TroubleInSnowland · 04/11/2020 13:09

I bought it because everyone raves about it and I hated it. I spent my whole time thinking I’d get to the good bit soon and I never did. I’ll read anything but this was such a struggle.

Palavah · 04/11/2020 13:32

It's not awful but then I read it in Thailand before it got famous (yah, yah).

What was immensely irritating is the way she spouted all this shit about herself and finding herself etc and she was songle for about 5 minutes, and so much of her storytelling was about her relationship status/how men viewed her. I wanted to tell her to chill out and spend a year by herself.

Anoisagusaris · 04/11/2020 13:33

I didn’t find it inspiring, just a harmless enough read.

Anoisagusaris · 04/11/2020 13:34

She was a pain in the hole though 😆

PegasusReturns · 04/11/2020 13:35

Self indulgent drivel - the follow up I suspect was even worse

AgentProvocateur · 04/11/2020 13:37

@Blueshmoo I also loved The Signature of All Things and was stunned to see it was the same author.

I see your One Day, and I raise the stakes by giving you any book by Victoria Hysop!

Nikori · 04/11/2020 13:37

I enjoyed it, but I’ve travelled a lot and can see the cynicism in everything. What I mean is that I could relate to the book but didn’t take it too seriously. I thought it was a fun read.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 04/11/2020 13:38

I really liked it.

One Day though; boring and annoying all in one go.

MysweetAudrina · 04/11/2020 13:41

I enjoyed it.

Strugglingtodomybest · 04/11/2020 13:42

I thought I'd hate it but I enjoyed it. Hated the film.

MummaBear4321 · 04/11/2020 13:45

Yes. It was terrible.

However I loved the movie. It actually had a big impact on my life. After watching it, i convinced a friend of mine to book a trip with me to italy. We were both 22, miserable and working in retail. We booked a flight to venice for 3 days later.

I married him 4 years later 😄

oigetoffmycheese · 04/11/2020 14:06

It was not my cup of tea. Self indulgent really. After that book I realised I needed to be more discerning about the books I read, as I have less time now I am a parent.

Mind you it took me well over a decade to work that out. Probably because it was only then that I was able to read a book without falling asleep after one page BlushConfused
