Has anyone here actually read Eat Pray Love?

It sounds like such vacuous, privileged shite, but it has some good reviews, more than I would've expected. But I know it's ridiculous to slate a book I've never even read. I almost want to read it to see how bad it is.

I hated One Day too.

@Taytocrisps

I enjoyed it - she's a good writer. I particularly enjoyed the Italy and Indonesia sections. The India section wasn't really my cup of tea but then again, I've never travelled to India or tried yoga. 'Committed' was rubbish. I read an interview a few years later and was surprised to hear that her marriage to the Brazilian guy was over. I read 'City of Girls' and only realized when I'd finished reading it that it's by the same author. It's a very different book.
I wasn't at all surprised that it didn't last. She seems to flit from one thing to another. I read that after the Brazilian guy, she had a relationship with a woman who died of cancer. She then moved in with the woman's ex partner or something like that, but they split up. Not judging, but that seems to be very much her personality. Maybe mine too, a little bit.

It was self indulgent and shallow, and for a book about finding herself she had very little insight - but it was very much of the time and you could see why it struck a chord. The Italy section was better because it was less condescending and culturally tone deaf.

Yes. Definitely vacuous but quite enjoyed it.

She suffers from a delusion particular to a specific tiny minority of privileged Americans, that the rest of the world is a cutesy theme park of picturesque foreigners designed to enable American quests for self-knowledge. Though I think the scene right at the beginning where she imagines the voice of God repeatedly giving her permission to explore how fabulous she is (complete with handy book deal!) took the biscuit for me.

I started it.

A desperately unpleasant self-indulgent whiney main character.

Like I say, I started it.

GERTgert06 · 05/11/2020 12:10

I've started it 3 times. Perhaps, when I'm desperate for reading material I might get beyond the first couple of chapters.

Loved the book and triggered me to read others that helped shape me.

My exh told me I should read it, so I haven't!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
