Has anyone here actually read Eat Pray Love?

It sounds like such vacuous, privileged shite, but it has some good reviews, more than I would've expected. But I know it's ridiculous to slate a book I've never even read. I almost want to read it to see how bad it is.

I started listening to the audio book. I gave up. She annoyed me (but not as much as Cheryl Strayed who wrote Wild)

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 04/11/2020 14:14

I really like the book! Have read it a few times.

One Day is really awful though

m0therofdragons · 04/11/2020 14:15

I watched the film and it was self indulgent shite. She’s a vile vacuous character who only cares about herself. I absolutely hated it and I’ll watch most things.

TenCornMaidens · 04/11/2020 14:26

I read it years ago and thought it was great. The film was APPALLING.

MarisPiper92 · 04/11/2020 14:29

I first read it while revising for Finals, and was also quite unwell at the time; it felt like a breath of fresh air and was my absolute favourite thing for a few days.

Re-reading in less stressful times did show it to be pretty self-indulgent (though as a PP said, she's quite a decent writer).

Harmarsuperstar · 04/11/2020 14:36

I read it years ago. Enjoyed it really, but its hardly great literature. I remember a bit about her eating the intestines of newborn lambs in Rome, which is apparently a delicacy Confused and the bit about her meditating for hours and having revelations.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 04/11/2020 21:50

Yes. I've read it more than once. First time I was heading to Rome which helps.

HotChoc10 · 04/11/2020 21:52

Also hated it, sorry. I remember reading the preface where she said she'd secured the book deal before she'd even set out on the trip which immediately seemed insincere.

CinnamonSweet73 · 04/11/2020 21:53

I tried but couldn't finish it!!

Deadringer · 04/11/2020 21:56

Self indulgent shite sums it up pretty well.

Purpleice · 04/11/2020 22:01

I hated it. So self-indulgent. Why not just get a divorce and have a spa weekend like a normal person? I couldn’t get through the film

OneKeyAtATime · 04/11/2020 22:03

It s such a shallow, poorly written book. That s a no from me.

Lis4Laughter · 04/11/2020 22:03

Read it years ago and really liked it. Would feel very grumpy and impatient with it now.

Lindor · 04/11/2020 22:04

Started it , but soon gave up. Very rare that I give up on a book.
Boring drivel

Justmuddlingalong · 04/11/2020 22:06

It was absolutely shite. And is on top of the "things I can use if toilet paper becomes scarce again" pile.

Neolara · 04/11/2020 22:06

I haven't read it, but I did read City of Girls by the same author which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Runningdownthathill · 04/11/2020 22:07

I loved the book but the film is awful.

MargotMoon · 04/11/2020 22:10

It's not the sort of thing I'd usually give the time of day but I read it after a friend enthused about it and found to my surprise I loved it. I completely get why there is so much loathing for it though!

Bellabelles · 04/11/2020 22:16

I really enjoyed it but read just after publication when it felt fresh. However it’s very much of it’s time and I imagine it’s aged badly. Film is one of the most boring films I have ever seen.

Agree with pp about Victoria Hislop books - dire!

IrenetheQuaint · 04/11/2020 22:21

I quite enjoyed it though it is a very light read - I read it on a long flight when I didn't have enough concentration for anything more serious. The sequel Committed, however, is seriously barrel-scraping.

Totally agree with the One Day hate!

Notcontent · 04/11/2020 22:43

I really enjoyed the first half or so of the book - but then it got too self indulgent for me...

HoneyToday · 04/11/2020 22:50

I listened to the audiobook during a very stressful time when I couldn’t sleep. It was so light and soothing that I kept having to go back a few chapters the next night as I’d eventually relax and fall asleep.

Taytocrisps · 04/11/2020 22:51

I enjoyed it - she's a good writer. I particularly enjoyed the Italy and Indonesia sections. The India section wasn't really my cup of tea but then again, I've never travelled to India or tried yoga. 'Committed' was rubbish. I read an interview a few years later and was surprised to hear that her marriage to the Brazilian guy was over. I read 'City of Girls' and only realized when I'd finished reading it that it's by the same author. It's a very different book.

Deadringer · 04/11/2020 23:05

I have just remembered, i was on a forum a few years ago and people were raving about 'Eat Pray Love', when i said i thought it was crap i was told i just didn't get it, and 'it probably went over my head'. HmmGrin

SimplyRadishing · 04/11/2020 23:12

Utter drivel.
Don't waste your time
