So a lot of people have voted for trump even though "everyone" claims to hate him
Millions vote for the torys although "everyone" claims to hate them

So purely hypothetical, if tomorrow morning a National paper published how you voted in every election, would it cause you embarrassment/ trouble

I know some people jn my family would hate how I have voted in some elections but I could back up my stance.

Obviously this is not about any vote/election in particular.

OP posts:
StylishMummy · 04/11/2020 10:37

I voted Tory and Leave - I'm happy with my choices but clearly most of Mumsnet would see me hung/drawn/quartered Grin

QueenBlueberries · 04/11/2020 10:42

I have been voted tactically for years, meaning that I have voted for different parties at different times to vote against a party. So I'm a swinger. Not embarrassing, but a bit erratic.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/11/2020 10:43

Nope.

I wouldn't be at all embarrassed. I'll tell anyone that asks anyway, but given such a high amount of tension these days, it's not something I instigate conversations about, but I enjoy the conversation when others instigate it.

I lived overseas for a few years and when I started voting I voted for the equivalent of the Lib Dem's & was really involved in the youth section - it's a wonder my parents didn't disown me 🤣

Not embarrassed in the least.

MummyOfZog · 04/11/2020 10:47

I wouldn't be embarrassed in the slightest. I don't feel too precious about it, and I've certainly never kept it a secret if anyone has asked which way I voted. I don't have a die-hard affiliation with any party and so I'm a bit of a floating voter, and will (and have) voted for all 3 of the main parties at different points in my life as I find how I lean on certain policies has ultimately differed as I grew up, had kids etc.

BearSoFair · 04/11/2020 10:47

No, pretty much everyone knows my views already! There might be some surprise that I've voted Lib Dem a couple of times and not always Labour, but it wouldn't cause me any embarrassment or difficulties explaining why.

QueenBlueberries · 04/11/2020 10:49

However, coming back to OP, Trump didn't win the popular vote in the last elections. Hillary Clinton won by 2.8 million votes. It will be even more evident in this election I think, so although clearly many millions of people vote for Trump, his opponent has and will win the popular vote.

Miriel · 04/11/2020 10:51

Not embarrassment, possibly trouble. My family and friends know that I voted Leave and have variously voted Lib Dem/Tory/spoilt ballot.

My colleagues don't, and I avoid talking about politics at work because I know their views are very different to mine. Some would be accepting of political difference, I'm sure, but the loud 'woke' group might make my life difficult.

SocialBees · 04/11/2020 10:53

I’m a floating voter - I’ve voted for all three of the main political parties in the last four elections! I’m not embarrassed by that (I think it’s better than sticking to one party no matter what, and I can justify each of my decisions at the time) but I guess some people might be surprised by it.

ANoTail · 04/11/2020 10:54

I have voted labour apart from when it was Blair, who I was fairly sure would take the party to the right, so I voted Green instead.
In short, I've never voted for anyone whose ever won.

mindutopia · 04/11/2020 10:56

Nope, I've always voted how I wanted to and quite progressively and everyone who knows me absolutely knows that. Same with dh. I think it's weird that people are weird about what and who they support politically. That said, I think the past few years have made it clear that there are quite a lot of closet racists and xenophobes amongst us, so maybe I'm a minority. Hmm

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 04/11/2020 11:01

There would be zero suprises round here.

unmarkedbythat · 04/11/2020 11:06

No, I am not a shy voter. Everyone who knows me knows my politics. I am proud of my voting choices otherwise I wouldn't be making them, who the fuck votes for something they're embarrassed to admit to voting for? I lived for years in an area that consistently elects Tories and was heavily Leave voting, my politics were deeply unpopular and I was never for a moment ashamed, embarrassed or afraid to be open about my beliefs and votes.

MrMeeseekscando · 04/11/2020 11:13

Not at all.
I'd probably face vitriol and blocking from some friends, but that says a lot more about them than it does me.
The ones that truly matter value my opinion

museumum · 04/11/2020 11:23

Nobody would be surprised at the general leaning of my votes but some might wonder about my exact choices at various points - I often vote tactically depending on the vote and constituency because sometimes i'd rather vote against a certain party than for a particular one.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/11/2020 11:26

No, I wouldn't worry but no one around me would be surprised by my choices. I've always talked honestly about what I think.

OohKittens · 04/11/2020 11:29

No because I'm an active labour member and have knocked on pretty much every door in this town wearing a labour top or raincoat.

timeforanewstart · 04/11/2020 11:32

No because who I vote for is up to me and I am not a judgmental twat who is critical of how others vote , that is also their right to vote how they see fit .
So many in here couldn't answer without having a dig at how someone else votes

MummytoCSJH · 04/11/2020 11:35

No. I have been very open about my politics since even before I was of age to vote and my record would back back me up.

timeforanewstart · 04/11/2020 11:36

Also i don't get the people who say they will vote for a certain party for life , and stick with them regardless

quietpersonattheback · 04/11/2020 11:38

Perhaps. It is hard to say. Certainly without knowing my reasons.

I did lose friendships after the referendum in 2016 which is a shame, although I suppose they were acquaintances rather than friends.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/11/2020 11:47

StylishMummy snap- I’ve never lied about my vote, even if everyone in my finance office was confused come brexit - I make my choices based on my opinions

unmarkedbythat · 04/11/2020 11:49

God, I am tired of this sort of thing.

Your post is mostly a dig at people who have expressed an opinion on this thread, but you aren't a judgemental twat because...?

Everyone can vote however they please and everyone can express an opinion on how people vote.
