So a lot of people have voted for trump even though "everyone" claims to hate him
Millions vote for the torys although "everyone" claims to hate them

So purely hypothetical, if tomorrow morning a National paper published how you voted in every election, would it cause you embarrassment/ trouble

I know some people jn my family would hate how I have voted in some elections but I could back up my stance.

Obviously this is not about any vote/election in particular.

I wouldn't be worried. I always vote Labour. except the time I was conned into thinking Scameron would be good for disabled people.

Plussizejumpsuit · 04/11/2020 09:39

No it wouldn't. Although I did begrudgingly vote for Labour in the last election. not a tory! I normally vote Green but felt I needed to make my vote count. Only other vote in a bit ashamed of is lib dem in 2002 or 3 local elections. But it was quite a tory rural area and he had good policies and it was before the coalition shiz.

TillyTheTiger · 04/11/2020 09:39

Nope, I've voted Lib Democrats in all elections except the last two when I tactically voted Labour in the hope of keeping out the Conservative candidate. I would consider voting Green if they ever stood a candidate in my area. I voted Remain in the Brexit referendum. I'd make all the same decisions again.

@Stripyhoglets1

No I wouldn't be embarrassed but I've never enabled this tory shit show!
Yeah this.

But as op says somone voted for the fuckers! Angry

BishopBrennansArse · 04/11/2020 09:42

Nope. Apart from the PR referendum. Was a bit young and didn't understand it properly.

AcornAutumn · 04/11/2020 09:42

I don’t remember this.

I’m definitely getting old 😂

TiersTiersTiers · 04/11/2020 09:43

Happy with my voting history

CeibaTree · 04/11/2020 09:46

No, I wouldn't - I've never voted Tory/BNP/Brexit Party etc in a GE so my conscious is clear 😂 Although I think I did put Boris down as my second choice for the mayoral elections all that time ago, so that could be a bit awkward I guess. But that was when he was going through his bumbling clown phase, not his current Brexiteering puppet of Dominic Cummings phase.

RunningFromInsanity · 04/11/2020 09:46

Nope. I’ve voted for many different parties depending on the election.
I I’ve voted for Green Party on the past, I voted to leave the EU, I voted for UKIP as a protest when my Brexit vote was threatened. I voted for Tories this time for the same reason, to ensure Brexit. Yet I vote Labour in my local elections.

All my votes were researched and although I don’t tend to discuss politics, I can and will defend them if necessary.

downwithallthesenamechanges · 04/11/2020 09:50

You only have to walk past me on the street to know who I vote for (I have a "don't blame me, I voted labour" mask) Grin and I've always voted that way so I doubt anyone would even bother to look at my voting history!

Baaaahhhhh · 04/11/2020 09:52

I've gone to the polling booth where general and council elections are on at the same time and voted for two seperate parties

Yes, totally. I think local and national politics are entirely different.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 04/11/2020 09:53

I wouldnt feel embarrassment at all, I live in a Tory stronghold and am very vocal that I do not follow the local grain. My thinking is the more I am open and honest with my political beliefs the more people may just understand my stance and actually THINK about their vote

Freshprincess · 04/11/2020 09:53

1 or 2 greens in my idealistic youth and labour in national elections. Council elections I’ve gone for Lib Dem a couple of times.
Don’t care who knows.

DinosaurOfFire · 04/11/2020 09:54

I wouldn't be ashamed

I have voted for a wide variety of parties, including Tories years ago, and would be happy to explain my views and why I voted that way.

However, we have anonymous voting for a reason. We currently have no lasting consequences of admitting who we vote for, but if I could lose my job or my home over my voting record as people did in the past? Then that would, naturally, influence many people's votes.

Dillo10 · 04/11/2020 09:55

You've identified the problem - "everyone seems to hate them" - to use Trump as an example, we literally never hear from the majority of the population of the US on their political views. And even if someone dislikes Trump, they will still vote for him if they feel he will protect their financial and business interests.

Baaaahhhhh · 04/11/2020 09:55

You see, I think it is really odd to vote for the same party year, after year, after year. Regardless of colour, they change policies, why don't people vote for policies rather than parties?

maureenfrombarnsley · 04/11/2020 09:59

Conservative voter, I'm not at all embarrassed. I make up my own mind at the polls, as everyone should feel free to do in a democracy.

TheRuleofStix · 04/11/2020 10:03

Voted for a mixture over the years. Never Tory and never would - their policies will never reflect my values.

SusannaSpider · 04/11/2020 10:07

I'd only be embarrassed by my lack of loyalty to any one party🙈. I have voted Conservative once in my life - John Major. Also fairly sure I have voted Libdem. My heart is with the Greens, they normally have my vote, but I tactically voted Labour this time, despite not liking Corbyn.

CeramicGuineaPig · 04/11/2020 10:10

No. If someone isn’t aware of how I vote they don’t know me very well.

Satsuma2 · 04/11/2020 10:11

I'm not embarrassed about how I have voted. I vote for policies, for issues. I don't understand people who vote the same every time, just because. One party I would never vote for is Labour having had inside experience, what a load of shysters. And no that does not make me a diehard Tory.

TigerBrite · 04/11/2020 10:13

In my experience the poor are very keen on socialism because they think money will be taken off rich people and given to them. So they voted Labour. I didn’t because I have a little bit of money and I want to keep it. People who don’t realise I have that money probably think I voted Labour alongside them. I don’t want them to know that I’m slightly better off and voted Conservative.

CeramicGuineaPig · 04/11/2020 10:14

@Baaaahhhhh

I find it odder to vote on the basis of policies, in general. Obviously there would be exceptions, and with Brexit policies had to consider whether I would support Lib Dems rather than Labour. As you say, parties can and do change their policies, and often will do this between saying what their policies are and getting elected. If I voted for a party because it said it was going to do xyz and then it didn’t I would be pretty pissed off. But if you vote for a party based on its overall ideology you have a pretty good idea of which policies it is going to do its best to enact and which were simply “please elect us”
whatayear20 · 04/11/2020 10:34

I'm very much a floating voter as well, but I have Close friends who are die hard labour supporters. One actually said to me once that he could not be friends with anyone that voted Tory. It just really surprised me

oldwhyno · 04/11/2020 10:37

Mmmm, I think I may have voted Lib Dem once. Blush
