How much help do you have to give your DCs with homework?
Obviously help is needed learning tables and spellings and some projects, but quite often they come home with tasks and it is very obvious that they haven't been taught how to do whatever it is at school, and the expectation is that we have to teach them. Examples; "write a summary of the book you have just read". Dc has no concept of how to do this. Maths sheets that I can't do despite Maths A level where i have to sit and go through every single step. Is this normal? I thought homework was for reinforcing what has been done at school, not a means to get parents to teach topics that haven't been covered?

Dd (year 4) only gets times tables and spellings, so I just check them once complete for any corrections.

I leave my yr 4 child to it and pretty much always have. If he asks for help, I will and I always check it for corrections that need making. But I don’t sit with him and explain every step.

We didnt get proper homework in y3 or Y4. Just reading aloud, tables, spellings. I helped with all of that, obviously.

I think it is normal that you have to actively manage their homework, at that age, as there is no chance they will cope with it on their own. Stupid of the school to set so much and especially things not already securely learned in the classroom.
