A video has emerged today on a nature site with three dead hedgehogs. All suspected to have died from eating poisoned slugs. Sad

Slugs are a big part of the hogs diet especially with coming up to hibernation.

I know you keen gardeners want to keep you plants slug free but it’s best to look for more eco friendly ways such as salt lines, eggshell lines and even beer traps.

Hedgehogs are endangered as it is.
Let’s not poison the ones we do have

I agree with you. Those horrible things were supposed to be banned but I believe the ban was overturned. Awful things which cause the poisoning of a lot of animals higher up the food chain.
We use some wool stuff around plants as the slugs and snails don't like the feel of it. It's not perfect but it does reduce the damage.

Oh that's so sad Sad I didn't know about slug pellets!

We don't use anything, instead we have a wildlife pond and bird feeders and the hedgehogs and frogs take care of the slugs. I haven't seen a single slug this year. Thrushes take care of the snails, again I haven't seen any.

Saw our first hedgehogs in years this year including the first ever one in our very urban area. I think the lack of cars helped. They are lovely wee things. I used to make mini cloches for seedlings from cut down bottles and that helped reduce losses.

I agree totally but I'm struggling with them getting into my garage and the house at this time of year.

Anyone else got this issue ?

purringpaws · 02/11/2020 10:10

Ps. Garage is an issue because it's where my washing machine is. They crawl into the baskets... need I say more 🤮

Rory786 · 02/11/2020 10:11

@purringpaws

I do

PrayingandHoping · 02/11/2020 10:14

I do. I bought pet/child safe granules that repel them rather than kill them and (touch wood!) haven't seen one inside yet!! They come into my kitchen 🤢
