Food foibles & mealtime mannerisms

Just for fun I wanted to know what weird habits other people have when it comes to eating.

For starters:

crisps - I cannot put my hand inside the packet and will always tip them into a bowl before eating. Grosses me out having crumby crisp debris on my hand!

Kitkats - HAVE to be eaten by nibbling the outside chocolate first then layer by layer eating the wafer. If you don't eat them like that then you're just odd.

Go on then, what's yours? Grin

I also have to put crisps in a bowl or on the plate with my sandwiches. I make DH out his in a bowl because I can’t hear the TV when he jams his hands in the packet and rustles around repeatedly for 12 minutes a time to fish out one crisps

When you have a curry or some liquidish dish with rice, they need to be separate half and half on the same plate and i just take some of the rice with some of the wet. DP drives me mad in that he mixes everything up so there id no longer white rice everything tastes of the sauce. It also looks so unappetising.

When eating snickers, I eat it layer by layer so chocolate first, then the nougat part as the stiff nuts in caramel layer is the stiffness that keeps it from collapsing.

I would put tabasco or sriracha on salted crisps. I don't know if that's weird.

I'm a masher! I love mashing and mixing all my food together before eating. I only ever do it if I'm eating alone though.

My weirdest thing is that I struggle to eat unbranded food that's not from my usual supermarket. It makes me feel a bit sick. It's fine if it's something new that I've never tried before but something like lettuce or chicken and I struggle. We wanted to switch supermarkets and I had to do a transition period where I was buying from both until the new one felt normal.

Toast must be cut diagonally, not straight across.

While DP is chewing he touches everything on his plate with the tip of the fork tines. For some reason it makes me want to hurt him.

I do both of those.

DH eats his food in turn. So all his carrots, then his potatoes , then his meat for example. It doesn't affect me, but I find him strange.

Haha, my husband does this - and it's always the meat last.

He's also very guilty of being that annoyingly loud crisp packet rustler....

and, he cuts bread from top to bottom down the middle, not horizontally like everyone else.

Gravy has to be in a separate bowl on the side so it doesn't make crispy bits eg potatoes soggy.

mrswhiplington · 02/11/2020 10:36

I like to cut my food up into small pieces before I start eating any of it. It makes everything cool down quicker.

fatherfintanstack · 02/11/2020 10:50

I really hate toast or sandwiches cut on the diagonal, it oddly feels undignified! I have no idea why!

OneofPansPeople · 02/11/2020 10:55

Maltesers, one in each cheek, suck off chocolate and then crunch .

RumJerrySailorRum · 02/11/2020 11:36

Sandwiches made from a loaf of bread must always be cut into triangles.....ditto toast, cheese on toast etc

There are actually very few foods I won't eat, BUT if they are not prepared/sliced etc a certain way I just can't bring myself to eat them e.g. onions.....big chunks of them puts me right off, I like them thinly sliced. I love Gammon, but only sliced off a joint, not those pre sliced joints you get when you go for a meal.

Drinks have to be from the right kind of glass.
Cutlery has to match.
Finger food has to be 'clean' if I can't adequately wipe my fingers on a napkin afterwards I will either ignore the food or ask for a (matching) knife and fork.

I never eat meat directly off the bone 🤮
