Kitchen

The kitchen in our house is tiny but we have a sizeable dining room. Due to the way the rooms fall it's not worth knocking through as we would end up with a really odd shaped room.

We really need to extend the house but builders in our area are ££££ at the moment that we just don't have.

I've attached a plan of our dining room (note where the door is inconveniently placed - can't be moved because of the stairs).

If we moved the kitchen into this space will we have enough room for a big 8 seater table (big family!!!) as well as sufficient worktop space. Has anyone got a similar sized space that could give me some inspiration? I fear the room is a bit narrow....

We have a separate utility so don't need washing machine but could do with a massive fridge because everything is squished in at the mo.......

I'd do it. I'd go for a larger kitchen/diner every time. We knocked through our kitchen and dining room and it's made the world of difference to family life. Instead of only using that space for a couple of hours a day, we have 2 family rooms.

It looks like a decent space. I would use string to mark out the worktops and table to see if the space works. If you have a utility you could have a galley style kitchen along the right hand wall? 5m is a long wall, that's 8 x 60cm base units and however many you want in the wall around the windows.

I sort of had my heart set on an island d but I don't think we have the space to do that and get in 900mm fridge, dishwasher, sink and ovens. There are 7 of us so I need somewhere to put everything!! Good plan though - I hadn't thought about putting units all along the right hand wall. I don't like wall units very much so would probably not put those on.

I think the table has to go at the end of the room adjacent to the big window.

Is the door put to the hallway? If so you could consider removing it to make the space more open.

You could try downloading something like the Ikea kitchen planner and having a play - you can put units down so you can see how they take up the space.

I'd probably start by putting a u shaped kitchen in the bottom half, possibly with a small peninsular at one side and the table across the top, 4 people at each side with their backs against the top wall, but I'm a bit rubbish at imaging how much space this would take up, so whether or not it would work well.

What are your plans for your old kitchen space? If it's small, could it work as 'overflow storage' so you keep things there that you don't use so much and extra food stocks if you keep those? Perhaps also a second fridge and/or freezer, so you can have a standard 600 mm width fridge freezer in your new kitchen diner, but extra space elsewhere?

I think it could work if you use your old kitchen as a utility. Washer, Dryer and big fridge/freezer in there but it is still pushing it.

I am in a small new build and there is only me living there. My area is similar to yours - 3.7m x 8m but mine is my lounge as well.

My kitchen, at one end, is 3.7m x 3m and has an island but if I were doing it again, I would have a peninsula rather than an island. Fulfill the same purpose but you get more storage and work space. It is ideal for me but would be very small to accommodate a large family. For you, something that size would only leave you a couple of metres for a large table which would be pretty squashed.

We have a separate utility. I'm going to turn the existing kitchen into a small playroom and a massive storage cupboard for all the stuff we have no where to put!!

I'm thinking there is t enough room for an island or peninsula in reality. I think we might be able to have a long bank down the right hand wall (no wall units though) and a floor to ceiling bank along the top wall. It's not really what I want though.
