Anyone (with a better imagination than I have) fancy solving this mystery?

My brain is fried by this, so I’ll just get straight to the point…

  1. On 22nd May, I purchased a pair of sandals from one of the pop-up ads on Facebook
  2. When they arrived, the sandals were really poor quality, nothing like the advert and they were too small for me (they’d actually sent a smaller size to which I’d ordered)
  3. After many, many emails back and forth, the seller (who it turned out was based in China) eventually accepted the return and, in June, I posted the sandals back to them
  4. On 2nd September, I received a refund for the sandals.
  5. End of story and lesson learned - don’t order crap stuff from FB pop-ups!
  6. Then today……..I receive a parcel, addressed to me, with a pair of the same sandals inside. Same colour, same style, but they’re definitely not the sandals I returned, they’re huge, about 4 sizes bigger than the ones I returned.
  7. But this is where it gets weird….the address label on the front of the parcel is in my handwriting. 100% it’s my handwriting, absolutely no doubt whatsoever. Addressed to me. With these same sandals inside.
  8. There’s a hand-written note in the package with the sandals, the note says that the sandals are too big, can a smaller size please be sent and gives the person’s name and full address for the smaller sized sandals to be sent. The note is written in a completely different hand-writing to the address label (the handwriting looks to be that of an elderly person, and the name given seems to indicate she’s an elderly lady, let’s call her Mavis).
  9. There’s nothing else in or on the bag, no other clues. The bag in which Mavis posted the sandals to me had been turned inside out and re-used, and the address on the original label had been cut out with scissors.
  10. The way my address is written on the outer bag is a bit different to the way I would write it…..I live above a shop, so I always write my address as shop name first, followed by door number/street name, town, city, postcode. However, this parcel is addressed door number/street name first, and then shop name, town, city, postcode. It also has “UK” at the end of the address, which I never write.
  11. But the address label is most definitely in my hand-writing. In my wildest imagination, I cannot for the life of me work out what’s happened here!
  12. How did Mavis, who lives in the north of England get my name and address (West Midlands) to return a pair of sandals, which were the same style and colour but a different size to a pair I returned to China more than 4 months ago?

Can anyone come up with an explanation, no matter how weird and wonderful? As it is, I feel like I've woken up in some kind of twilight zone!

That’s seriously weird. Please ring Mavis and let us all know.

Mavis is you in an alternate reality.

Do NOT call her, interdimensional calls are astronomically expensive.

Whatisapension · 30/10/2020 15:52

Was there a delivery note in the package that you ordered? Maybe the company put the wrong delivery note in Mavis’ parcel and she has assumed that it is the returns address.

SoupDragon · 30/10/2020 15:59

I would write to Mavis rather than phone her.

Hi, sorry for having disappeared.....we picked up a puppy on Thursday evening, and I'd forgotten how much hard work a puppy is!

So slight update; I carefully cut the main address label off the packaging (the one addressed to me and in my handwriting). The name/address is written on an A4 sheet of paper and folded over at the top of the paper is FROM:

Then I had a lightbulb moment - when I returned my size 4 sandals, I put this sheet of paper with my name and address on it into the parcel because there was no 'official' order paperwork with them. And the company had been so difficult about my returning them that I wanted to make sure they knew who the sandals were from so that i got my refund.I

So, somehow the note I sent back to China with my size 4 sandals has ended up being included in the parcel with Mavis's size 8 sandals. Mavis has then realised her sandals are too big and and sent them back to me to request a smaller size (because my note, which was in with her sandals, says "from...my name and address").

I thought maybe the Chinese company had reused the bag I returned my size 4 sandals in, and the note accidentally got left in the reused bag. But then I remembered that I returned the sandals in the same bag they came in, and i remember how much sellotape I had to use to secure the bag because it was ripped and very damaged. So it wouldn't have been in a reusable condition.

It's possible, but unlikely, that a conscious decision was made to send my "from" note in with Mavis's size 8 sandals as a final "two fingers" to me (we did have quite a battle before they agreed to accept the sandals back, and i had to pursue a PayPal case in the end). Like I said earlier, there was no invoice/delivery note sent with my sandals, so I assume my note would have been the only 'paperwork' in Mavis's parcel.

So I can kind of see how it happened, but I'm still puzzled as to why it happened.

How about - you put one of your little sent by stickers on the package when you returned the shoes.

Back in China, that sticker managed to find its way into Mavis’s package with her shoes. Maybe they reused your packaging when they sent it.

Mavis goes to return the shoes, finds your sticker and assumes that’s where the shoes came from.

Because the writing on the sticker is so small (presumably) and Mavis doesn’t have great eyesight, she gets her daughter to copy it on to the return package.

It is just an incredible coincidence that’s Mavis Jr has remarkably similar handwriting to you.

Perhaps Mavis is a version of yourself from the future?

ive been watching too much umbrella academy

EminyBOO · 01/11/2020 10:28

Well that was a disappointing cross post Grin

But glad mystery is solved.

motorcyclenumptiness · 01/11/2020 10:31

Mavis is controlling all of the hands with the power of her mind? Yep that'll be it.

SpookyNoise · 01/11/2020 11:57

What are you going to do with Mavis’s shoes?
