Dreams of hidden/extra rooms

It's been one of my most persistent recurring dreams to be living in a house and then suddenly discovering or remembering that it has extra rooms or wings. Does anyone else have this?

Oh god I always had this dream as a child. I still have it as a grown up although very infrequently, probably only once or twice in the last ten years. It usually starts in my (late) grandmothers house although it doesn’t always look how her house looked if that makes sense. I find a secret staircase behind a door and then all these new rooms and corridors. I keep going up and up and walk first through normal quite grand rooms with a red carpet, then through rooms where all the furniture is under white dust sheets, then I am finally really high up and there is no carpet. It’s dark and dusty. I have to squeeze through really small doorways and the staircases become steep and twisting. Sometimes I can see through to what’s happening on lower floors.

BirdsDoIt · 29/10/2020 22:13

I get this and it’s usually a lovely dream - exciting to find new rooms and figure out what to do with them. Like @Bumblebee413 and @Bvop I’m disappointed to wake up!

PajamasnoDramas · 29/10/2020 22:13

A recurring theme here also, I almost feel disappointed when I wake as the rooms are always nice and in my dream I’m always delighted to find some extra space. I never find anything interesting in them though even though they are furnished.

Yes I find it exciting too.

Moreira · 29/10/2020 22:14

Yes, I have this dream on a recurrent basis. In the dreams I find another bit to the house which despite having lived in the house for years I never knew it was there. It’s always a massive extra bit of the house which has been unused for years and needs renovating and I always wake up before the renovation project is underway.

woodhill · 29/10/2020 22:15

Yes I've had that dream before, it isn't always my home possibly my childhood house or another imaginary one

SummerHeatwave · 29/10/2020 22:20

Yes, me too! Love this dream, so exciting to find the extra rooms and see the possibilities there and plan how to use the extra space. Sometimes I have to crawl through a small or hidden opening to access the extra rooms, sometimes I need to reach up high to access a ladder or similar, sometimes there's even extra garden too. Usually there's furniture already in these rooms, sometimes plants too or a musical instrument (I don't play). This dream gives me a really peaceful happy feeling and a sense of escaping from the everyday.... as well as sense of wonder and disbelief that I've not found these rooms before! 🤣

LolalovesLondon · 29/10/2020 22:21

Yes!!
I dream of the same layout too.
I can even picture the street and garden.

A place entirely made up as I have never been anywhere like it ever!

In my dream I only live in 2 of the rooms and moved in thinking that was it!
In my dream I explore the new rooms.
I can picture each hidden/unused room/ bathroom as well as how they are furnished.

All of the unused/ hidden/ locked away rooms are in a really bad state of repair.
One of them is huge and there is a massive basement the size of the footprint of the house.

MissMarplesGlove · 29/10/2020 22:22

Y Es it’s a recurring dream for me. There’s one house that is so familiar to me in my dreams and my memory of the dream, that I can’t believe I’ve never been there but it’s also scary ....

NilesandDaphne · 29/10/2020 22:23

Yes I have this dream a lot! I have to choose which room I want Confused and for one reason or another they are all unsuitable. It normally goes hand in hand with my dream of inaccessible toilets, filthy, overflowing, overlooked Blush how strange I sound Grin

lingle · 29/10/2020 22:25

Black:
Welcome to life in a Victorian maisonette in a big building.
My neighbour and I did discover an actual room -with wallpaper -above me and below her.

LuxuryWoman2020 · 29/10/2020 22:27

Yes! I find it fascinating. Its common dream and I have it fairly regularly

BitchyHen · 29/10/2020 22:27

Yes I get this too. Last time I had this dream the hidden room was stacked up with loads of old chairs.
Apparently the house represents the self, so the hidden room is hidden depths/aspects of the self. Not sure what the chairs mean though - a cluttered mind maybe?

NeverEnoughCats · 29/10/2020 22:27

Yep, had it last night. I dreamed that my partner and I moved in to an old house with a massive inglenook fireplace. There was an old stove at the back, but a new one at the front. There were two doors, one either side of the stoves. The right hand one was just an empty, and slightly creepy room with brick walls. The one to the left contained a well. I remember thinking that we’d have to block that off because of his youngest.

We’re just sorting out him and his kids moving in to my house. The flue from the wood burning stove in the living room runs through the wardrobe in the bedroom that his youngest will have. We talked about blocking it off yesterday, which is where I guess the dream came from.

LolalovesLondon · 29/10/2020 22:27

Just googled it!

To dream of discovering new rooms is often a symbol of realising new aspects of your own personality. ... Even if the rooms you discover are old and neglected, it still is a positive sign that there are aspects of yourself you may have forgotten about, but still exist as very real parts of who you are.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 29/10/2020 22:28

Love having dreams like these. I have them quite often too. One of the most memorable was going down into our cellar (which is dark, damp and full of spiders irl) and finding a luxurious swimming pool and underground train station down there, it was very exciting!

Shizzlestix · 29/10/2020 22:30

Id love to wake up and find that the bathroom was lots bigger. I’m jealous of my mum’s, which is huge, but carpeted and contains a bidet! 🤮

transformandriseup · 29/10/2020 22:32

Yes I have had this with every house I have lived in.

However ... it very nearly came true the other day when we found a door in our house which had been hidden behind old wallpaper for many decades.

Sadly it was just a cupboard.

Chosennone · 29/10/2020 22:32

Yes!
Quite often. In my old house , which was too small, I was over the moon to discover a secret hallway and extra bedrooms!
In this house it's usually a huge cellar/ warehouse and quite creepy

Aquarius1 · 29/10/2020 22:32

Glad I found this thread - I go through phases of having have this dream too- it always starts in my late grandmother’s old house and sometimes it’s a bit spooky; other times it’s like finding treasure. Grateful to read about the positive aspects of what it could mean.

oldnormalplease · 29/10/2020 22:34

I have these sort of dreams in the past and always enjoy them. Would happily have them every night. The 'new' rooms in my house are always unfurnished. Or I'm looking round a new house and choosing which bedroom will be mine!

I also have dreams sometimes where I discover a new area of my town and there's loads of great shops etc there.

Conversely, whenever I dream I'm looking for a loo, they are always filthy, no paper, locks don't work etc. Hmm

Pikachubaby · 29/10/2020 22:40

Ooooh! Is this a thing?

I dream this all the time

Often it’s dusty bedrooms at a hidden level, sometimes with people in them I had forgotten about

Last night it was 3 bedrooms, one had an old man and his career in it and I thought :” shit I have forgotten about them for years!” Woke up stressed

It’s always rooms I do not want

Sometimes it’s an extra kitchen behind my real kitchen full of forgotten rotting food

It’s a recurring stress dream I hate

VenusClapTrap · 29/10/2020 22:41

No, but I did find one in real life. We’d been in this house for a couple of months when it dawned on me that what I thought was just an extra outside door between the utility room and the downstairs loo couldn’t actually be one, because there wasn’t one on the outside. It was a big larder.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 29/10/2020 22:42

I get this. The houses in question are either real or imaginary houses belonging to real members of family and the rooms are always really bizarre or downright scary. I think the dreams relate to buried trauma/abandonment issues.

DappledThings · 29/10/2020 22:45

Yes, used to all the time but not for ages. Always full of the previous owner's stuff that for some reason I can't throw away. And with really bad cracks or holes in the ceiling etc.

Quite often the new room have loads of beds in, like a hostel dormitory room.
