Im going for mash, but what sort of vegetables. Im completely uninspired and want it to taste super tasty. If only because I'm not convinced the pie will be any good! Roasted carrots? Cabbage maybe?

Oh, I’d do a mixed leaf salad myself.

Any combo of Roasted carrots, swede, parsnip
Cabbage
Chilli and garlic green beans (basically a chopped chilli and two cloves of garlic fried in a bit of olive oil then add a knob of butter and the beans)

CassandraCross · 29/10/2020 14:36

Mash with roasted carrots and cabbage sounds lovely just add gravy.

Plump82 · 29/10/2020 14:42

Ooh lots of suggestions. I love the sound of the chilli and garlic beans and if i dont make that for the pie ill definitely do it for another meal. Spiced red cabbage also sounds right up my street.

I forgot the English name but in Germany you mash potatoes with carrots, maybe a tiny sautéed shallot, add cream, nutmeg and parsley. It a country dish called Möhren Untereind’. You could add turnips/swede/any root really.

MsInsomniac · 29/10/2020 21:37

Chips, gravy and mushy peas

Pomegranatemolasses · 29/10/2020 21:38

Roast green beans in olive oil, salt and pepper. When they're done (shrivelled and crispy and a little brown in places) grate over lots of Parmesan and toss in crushed garlic. Utterly divine.

in Scotland there is clapshot and rumbledethumps ....both a mashed veg concoction, might be carrots, might be neep.

Ireland have champ and colcannon.

shinynewapple2020 · 29/10/2020 21:42

I'd have mash potato, broccoli and green beans with red bistro gravy which is veggie / vegan .

I prefer pies which are based around vegetables rather than pretend meats . Higgidy do a nice one with mushrooms in and I've had a mushroom one in the past from Lidl.

Plump82 · 30/10/2020 11:06

These suggestions all sound delicious.

I do usually prefer pies filled with veg but my husband bought these fake steak ones so feel i should use them!

Red cabbage with apple and balsamic vinegar, asparagus, butternut squash with sage butter. All flavoursome.

Roasted carrots and steamed tenderstem broccoli if you want simple

speakout · 30/10/2020 11:29

Just serve as you would normally serve a pie with beef- so mash or chips, veg or beans maybe some extra gravy on top.

iklboogeymum · 30/10/2020 11:40

A mixed leaf salad with pie & mash? Not for me thanks.

Exactly!!

Gravy has no place being near salad.

If it was another type of savoury pie maybe containg cheese or veg or other non gravy stuff a salad would be fine- but who eats salad with gravy?
