From the wall of my holiday flat. A perfectly ordinary, pleasant picture of a lighthouse in the moonlight, with an apparent still life of fruit randomly plonked in the foreground.

WTF? Any art critic MNers help me out?

Does the /47 next to his signature mean the picture is a limited edition print of the original painting?

Fred Uhlman wrote Reunion, a short but amazing book. It’s one of 20 or so books that I won’t ever get rid of. It’s about a deep friendship between two boys, one Jewish and one not, in the pre war years in Germany. It is written from the point of view of one of them looking back on their friendship years later. Honestly, it’s a fantastic book, I love it so much.

47 is the year he painted it ..looks original with cracking and flaking oil paint, needs some preservation work to it .
Very typical mid century mid european (artist was German ) surrealist influences onto traditional themes .

Well I've learned loads. And using the links I think I've worked out what the random fruit are..

Is it worth anything?

Hi Op I quite like this painting quite easy on eye have never seen this particular painting, I like the mix of atmospheric ,with the image of fruit it looks surreal,striking that fruit is there like the ffruit should be elsewhere on a different picture.

So, I think it's St Agnes lighthouse, Isles of Scilly. And there's a beach on St Agnes called Beady Pool because a shipload of beads washed up from a 17th century shipwreck.

So the random fruit are possibly beads?

(I still thing it's a bit crap)

Could the fruit be actually there on a table in the foreground? Alfresco lunch with lighthouse?? It looks like wood strips underneath, but it’s so tiny on my phone.

Beads makes more sense than a large blue one on the left being fruit
