I want to be TERRIFIED! What should I watch, read or listen to?

Long time lover of the horrible and scary, but nothing much is hitting the spot any more, and all the so called horror films I've seen or books I've read recently have been complete yawn fests.

Can you recommend a film, programme, book, podcast or YouTube thing to keep me awake at night?

Thanks!🦇🧟

I found House of Leaves a very unsettling book indeed. It’s quite ... dense ... and not always an easy read but it is just so creepy and horrible and gets in your head. I wish they’d make a film - it could be brilliant.

Duvetstay · 27/10/2020 20:00

Dark water - the Japanese one

MysweetAudrina · 27/10/2020 20:01

The News?

FancyPuffin · 27/10/2020 20:02

If you haven’t already tried him, I’d highly recommend Adam Nevill. Go with either Apartment 16, The Ritual or House of Small Shadows. I can’t promise terror but I found them very unsettling.

The News?
Damn you beat me to it
AliceAforethought · 27/10/2020 20:10

Thanks all. Some good suggestions.
However, I did fancy some horror as it would be an improvement on the news!

I've heard of House of Leaves before, it sounds quite interesting and original.
And unsettling is good, so I'll try out some Adam Nevill Smile

It Follows?

The Road?

starsinyourpies · 27/10/2020 20:21

Station Eleven would be a pretty terrifying read right now.

hopefulhalf · 27/10/2020 20:22

Contagion

midsomermurderess · 27/10/2020 20:23

Turn of the Screw. Bloody terrifying. The Others scared the bejesus out of me.

redskittleorangeskittle · 27/10/2020 20:25

I’m currently loving the Haunting of Hill house book. It’s quite different from the TV series so far.

Lonelynow · 27/10/2020 20:27

Not a book but I really enjoy some of the stuff on the reddit Nosleep or paranormal subs. I have spent far too many hours on there recently 😂.

velourvoyageur · 27/10/2020 20:28

Hush (Netflix) - too hardcore for me, though I did see it through via a cushion

pastandpresent · 27/10/2020 20:31

Conspiracy theories. How many normal people are sucked into it scares the shit out of me.

Plussizejumpsuit · 27/10/2020 20:32

The orphanage. I think it's a Spanish language film. I have never seen anything this scary before.

Meowza74 · 27/10/2020 20:34

Do you have Shudder? It's a horror movie platform, like Netflix but all horror.

There's some good stuff on there, some decent old school horror and also some new experimental/low budget stuff.

Meowza74 · 27/10/2020 20:36

I also recently found this good fun www.amazon.co.uk/Last-Days-Jack-Sparks-unpredictable/dp/0356506851

Moonmelodies · 27/10/2020 20:43

ISIS or Mexican drug cartel videos?

BatonRouge · 27/10/2020 20:43

David Lynch's Eraserhead - I can't even begin to understand it. Atmospheric, surrealist horror at its finest.

Smudgefell · 27/10/2020 20:46

The Outsider series, based on the Stephen King book. I don’t know why but I found it so unsettling and it still scares me now to think about it!!!

JustGetThroughTheDay · 27/10/2020 20:47

Jeff Wayne's war of the worlds always frightens me. Think it's cause I heard it as a child but the music makes me shiver.

happylittlechick · 27/10/2020 20:51

The threads on here where people share their creepy stories. I always find myself reading it late at night and scaring myself.

Clawdy · 27/10/2020 20:52

MR James ghost stories. All these years later, they are still terrifying, and the images never leave your head.

dayswithaY · 27/10/2020 21:33

Lets Not Meet podcast, some are a bit obvious but they are all true stories and you can get some really creepy ones. Ranker website has loads of true scary stories from undertakers and hospital staff bit similar to Reddit.

RosieLemonade · 27/10/2020 21:35
