Dou mui. I am now dreaming of tender pea shoots steeped in garlic. Absolutely delicious. I am lucky to live on the west coast of Canada where we have an enormous number of immigrants and visitors from Southeast Asia. We also have a climate where greenhouse growing of things like peppers and tomatoes is economic. I am not sure, but I think pea shoots are grown that way in winter. We can get them but they are very expensive. We never have them except in season.

And now not at all because of Covid.

Another yummy thing is Ginger Beef. Very bad for you I am sure. Sweet and sour beef that is deep fried with a tangy sticky sauce. So good. It was, legend says, invented in Calgary, Alberta to suit Canadian palates. Works for me (in extreme moderation). It is sometimes listed as Calgary Ginger Beef on menus.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/10/2020 00:35

Salt and pepper tofu.

Just discovered salt and pepper chicken wings at my local chinese takeway - amazing!

Mariola212 · 29/10/2020 01:34

Love a Chinese curry!

Mariola212 · 29/10/2020 01:34

And the one with mince in lettuce leaf.

OtterInDisgrace · 29/10/2020 01:54

Salt and pepper chips.

Accept no substitute.

OtterInDisgrace · 29/10/2020 01:59

Still searching for an Old Skool pancake roll.

Spring rolls are not the same. It needs to be huge: the size of a burrito; with a pancakey batter, and made fresh on-site from leftovers. It also needs to spit grease all down your front when you bite into it.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/10/2020 02:04

I can't find proper spring rolls anywhere, just the silly little ones.

Zhx3 · 29/10/2020 02:10

From my local takeaway:

  • salt and pepper chicken wings or tofu
  • Singapore fried vermicelli
  • Beancurd with black bean sauce and green peppers

@Rae36

Salt and chilli chips. My absolute favourite. Have tried to recreate them myself at home but never got it right. I think it's the lashings of msg I probably missing
You can buy Aromat seasoning which has got a tonne of MSG in it and seriously improves nearly all food!

My favourite is king prawn with ginger and pineapple. I had Tom Yum soup the other day which was really good too.

EmbarrassedUser · 29/10/2020 10:10

We had a rather large Chinese on Monday between 4 of us and had:

Salt and pepper chicken
Salt and pepper chips
Curry sauce (a must have!)
Squid in chilli sauce (ordered accidentally, I was a bit meh but DH practically licked the box so wasn’t wasted!)
Sweet and sour chicken and pork balls
House special fried rice x 2
Egg fried rice
Singapore fried rice
Prawn roast
Prawn crackers

Was fab 😋😋

EmbarrassedUser · 29/10/2020 10:10

Oh and crispy chilli beef

Carpballs · 29/10/2020 10:16

Crispy shredded beef, chicken in yellow bean sauce, 1/4 crispy duck = heaven

amicissimma · 29/10/2020 11:15

Char siu pork.

sashh · 29/10/2020 11:17

The proper sweet and sour chicken, not the one with chicken balls in batter, it's much crispier and tastes much better.

Mixed starter or mixed dim sum.

sohypnotic · 29/10/2020 11:22

Shouldn't have read this thread...really want Chinese now! Our faves:
Beef in mushroom with oyster sauce
Crispy shredded chilli beef
Salt and pepper ribs
Crispy Seaweed
I'm also very partial to a good chicken satay skewer but sadly find them a bit hit and miss!

Thingsarel00kingup · 29/10/2020 12:40

Chicken satay skewers, from the Starters menu, but all to myself Blush
Lovely chicken breast (on skewers) with a peanutty-sweet chilli type sauce. Plus seaweed (which I think is probably shredded, deep fried cabbage?) just so crunchy, sweet and savoury.

sashh · 29/10/2020 13:03

The seaweed is cabbage, fried and MSG added

MrsBeltane · 29/10/2020 13:05

Chilli salt squid and some kind of noodles.

Ninkanink · 29/10/2020 13:06

Crispy chilli beef, Singapore noodles, Szechuan king prawns, salt and chilli squid or chicken.

Trousersareoverrated · 29/10/2020 13:08

Kung pao chicken, sweet and sour prawns Hong Kong style, chicken satay main.

I want a Chinese now. Thanks for that Halloween Hmm
