Great family films/TV to watch with DD (age 9)

We have a weekly movie night as a family, and rapidly running out of ideas that would be suitable to watch together, together with TV show ideas.
DD still loves to watch children’s TV and films by herself, but has quite a sophisticated/mature selection of films and TV shows she’s loved when watching stuff as a family. Does anyone have any recommendations, both of TV shows or films? I’ll list some of the stuff we’ve already watched to give an idea (maybe this is useful for others who may be struggling for ideas too):

TV

GBBO
Race Across The World - would love more series like this!
Absurd Planet
Michael Palin - Around The World In 80 Days
Crystal Maze
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Horrible Histories
Faking It
Glee
The Floor Is Lava

FILMS

All Jurassic Park
All Jumanji
All of The Hunger Games
Moulin Rouge
Labyrinth
Grease
Hugo
We Bought A Zoo
My Neighbour Totoro
Spirited Away
Up
Honey, I Shrunk The Kids
Back to the Future
Gremlins
Eurovision
High School Musical
Life of Pi
Parent Trap
Sound of Music
Groundhog Day
Sleep Over
Night at the Museum
Enola Holmes

Cobra Kai , you will enjoy it as well !

Findahouse21 · 27/10/2020 09:47

TV - my daughter is a little younger (6) but has really enjoyed watching junior masterchef USA and the Australian version of masterchef as they are formatted differently ntky to the UK version and arr more exciting to watch I think. Obviously just make sure the adult version is the beeped out one!!

You might want to start by watching Karate Kid first ( the original) for a bit of background

I'd try some more old-school musicals if she likes The Sound of Music. Maybe Singing in the Rain, Funny Face, any old dance films with Ginger Rogers? I loved old films when I was a kid Smile

Greatest Showman?
My son in 9 and loves the simpsons movie
Do you think she might be a bit young for Pitch Perfect?

Hobbes8 · 27/10/2020 09:55

If you have Disney plus there’s lots of tweenie movies on there. My daughter is younger but she loves The Descendants, which is a musical about the teenage children of Disney villains. I think there’s a sequel or two.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Will def check out Masterchef, as she’s really into cooking.

Ah, yes she has seen Greatest Showman and Descendants, loved them!
And Incredibles, forgot about that too.
And Bend it Like Beckham.

@Hobbes8 and @Dontforgetyourbrolly
I’ll check those out, thanks.

Regarding swearing and stuff, we’re quite relaxed about it, and DD is very blasé.

Good idea re the old movies @FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18I loved old movies as a child too.

Dd also likes mamma Mia, although she's young enough that the sex references go right over her head so you might not be happy for your dd.

tigerbear · 27/10/2020 10:44

@Findahouse21 ah, this is an old favourite aswell. DD watches both that and Mamma Mia 2 on repeat.
Sorry, I realised that I’ve left out loads of stuff we’ve watched out of the original list. 😬
