I smell soap OR I smell of soap- I can’t tell which!

My sense of smell has gone completely batty! For the past 4-5 days I have smelled soap all the time. I can smell other scents if they are about but if there is nothing in particular to be smelled, I smell soap! It seems to be most strongly coming from my skin- I.e. what is normal showering with my usual shower gel is for some reason overpowering to me now. I tried just sticking on deodorant today but I still smell soap.

I keep getting my husband to sniff me and he can’t smell any soap.

Driving me bonkers. Anyone had anything similar before and did it go away as quickly as it appeared?

JetBlackSteed · 26/10/2020 21:38

I’m 52 and have an IUD so no chance I’m pregnant! I did wonder about COVID but I’m fairly certain I had it back in March and at that time was properly ill and completely lost both my sense of smell and taste (came back after a couple of weeks). No other COVID symptoms just now either.

Same shower gel and hand wash - I just smelled my knee and it stinks of soap too so is either my imagination or my shower gel which I used for years.

I had a sudden thought that maybe it was my clothes, but they don’t smell of soap!

New washing powder or softener? Shampoo? Hairspray?

heartshapedfaces · 27/10/2020 01:57

you can get Covid twice

DougRossIsTheBoss · 27/10/2020 02:23

Heard something on the radio about this recently. When you lose your smell and taste due to Covid it can sometimes come back very odd and different. The program said it was due to only some receptors recovering and not all of them. Makes sense to me. They seemed to think it was probably temporary and that all could come back in time.

tectonicplates · 27/10/2020 02:37

Did you start a new bottle of shower gel recently? Any chance they've changed their ingredients?

AlmaBaldwin · 27/10/2020 02:42

Do you have anyone other than your husband willing to smell your knee... Grin

There have been a fair few “will a MNer come and be our wedding witness” threads.

Get HQ to change your title to “Please can MNers come and smell my knees?” Smile

I'd get a covid19 test if I were you.

AngelaScandal · 27/10/2020 03:52

Worth a medical opinion as some medical conditions can be indicated by a change in smell

bebarkered · 27/10/2020 04:21

YES! My sense of smell has changed beyond belief. And, it's driving me insane. I'm having a really bad menopause so I can only put it down to that x

lightlypoached · 27/10/2020 05:06

I smelt weird when I was going through menopause, not of soap though. It wasn't very nice but it went with time.

It was sort of a sour fragrance. My DD could smell it on me too.

It's bloody hormones no doubt.

Bumping my own zombie thread to say that the smell of soap eventually vanished as quickly as it appeared but I read this article the other day and now suspect it was a long COVID symptom!

I've had long Covid and smelling weird stuff is a recognised symptom. With me it was burning meat. Like someone having a BBQ outside your room. Very odd!
