Can I ask a monumentally stupid question about breakfast?

IWantToGoDancing · 25/10/2020 19:27

I've never eaten breakfast. My mum gave up about 14 and since then I've not eaten until about midday.

Anyway, I'm trying to change my habits because I'm a bit underweight.

I just can't fathom the logistics of actually making something to eat and cleaning it all up.

I get up at 6.30 and leave at 7.30. How long does it all take you? What do you have?

Ideally something low in calories because I couldn't be doing with toast.

I am a fan of a mug of soup for breakfast also.... I have a thick pea soup with ham that I make and often eat for breakfast. My colleagues think I am mad, but I do not like sweet breakfast type foods.

Each to her own but 🤢

I take yogurt and strawberries to work in a Tupperware pot that has a separate compartment for some granola or museli. I eat at about 10-10.30. I work from home mostly now so sometimes I do something bit more interesting like avocado on toast or bacon sandwich

Itmaybeus · 25/10/2020 20:18

Fruit salad,
Pieces of fruit, (dd not a big fan of breakfast likes pineapple),
Porridge,
Toast beans/scrambled eggs,
Toast,
A crumpet,
Brioche,
Cereal,
Muffin,
Croissant.

Flahavans high quality irish porridge. weight 40g,put in bowl with 150ml of mik. Ping in microwave for 80 seconds, remove, add a swirl of real honey and enjoy. Total prep time, 3 mins tops ?

20bloodypumpkins · 25/10/2020 20:18

Avocado on toast. Healthy, filling, delicious

Boatonthehorizon · 25/10/2020 20:20

Cereal, weetabix, coco pops, cheerios, krave. People are very mean about sweet cereals but then eat cake and biscuits. I live sweet cereals.
I spent most of my life genetically underweight so always have full fat milk (blue top).
Also toast and Nutella or marmite. Also fruit.
Sometimes porridge but it's too much hard work, it burns really quickly unless I stir continuously.

Sometimes toast ham and cheese like on the continent.
Rarely scrambled eggs.

H3LPm3 · 25/10/2020 20:20

Have a keto breakfast if you don't want the carbs.

Sliced Avocado, eggs (takes 2 mins) and maybe smoked salmon?

Or easier option, banana and peanut butter. Maybe carry some nuts if you're not allergic for a mid morning snack.

I dont think there is anything wrong with not eating breakfast, you're basically doing the 18-6 fast. As long as you eat well in the 6 hours, all is good. And drink lots of water.

all food is breakfast food.

Ive had noodles for breakfast and rice dishes etc

Cereal and bread companies don't want you to know that though :P

TheArchFear · 25/10/2020 20:21

Of course you eat breakfast. It's the first food of the day. The meal that breaks your fast. The clue is in the name.

Unless you have never eaten any food and weigh minus ten stone, you have eaten breakfast.

DParse · 25/10/2020 20:21

I'd also suggest one Shredded Wheat as a possibility. That's what I used to have when the DC were small and I was setting an example about breakfast.

H3LPm3 · 25/10/2020 20:21

Oh seen a previous post about no peanut butter - sunflower seed butter? Basically just sunflower seeds mashed to a pulp!!!

Muffinhead12 · 25/10/2020 20:22

I used to be like that and have rarely ever eaten breakfast, I have recently started making the effort though. I take porridge pots to work with me which I eat just before I start.

IWantToGoDancing · 25/10/2020 20:22

Oh you see, yoghurt is very different in my mind to bread Grin I've always struggled with eating, whether you want to call that an ed or not...

@IWantToGoDancing

If I put on weight too fast I'll only upset myself. I'm not good with bread.

I really think I could do yoghurt though!

Have you ever talked to anyone about your attitude to food and weight? Some of what you say - being underweight but wanting something low calorie, not wanting to put weight on fast, being 'not good with bread', the vague distate about the palaver of making and cleaning food - all sound incredibly like me and my friends when we were in denial about our eating disorders.

It may be that this is way off the mark and that's great. If you do have some type disordered eating, whether or not you might meet official criteria for one disorder or another, breakfast is a good thing to do, but you need and deserve more support from a qualified person. GPs can help, waiting lists can be long but even seeing a proper dietitian can help a lot and is affordable for many people privately if needed (and one who is a specialist in disordered eating, definitely not a nutritionist who is not properly qualified and in many cases will push faddy diets that can make things worse). There is a lot of support out there if you do happen to need it.

I don’t eat breakfast, never had as my stomach can’t take anything 7ntil I have been up an hour or so. I take breakfast to work, normally cereal and a yoghurt and a piece of fruit and eat it there

gospelsinger · 25/10/2020 20:24

What's overnight oats? I'm intrigued

Disfordarkchocolate · 25/10/2020 20:25

Make some savoury muffins and freeze, take one out to defrost the night before. Eat and enjoy.

Yogurt with granola or with fruit. A different colour fruit each day for variety or make a compote.

Shredded wheat, lovely and filling and extra nice with hot milk.

TwilightSkies · 25/10/2020 20:25

Ideally something low in calories because I couldn't be doing with toast.

What do you mean by this?
You say you are underweight and then that you want a low-cal breakfast.
What’s wrong with toast?

Do you have issues with food?

OverTheRubicon · 25/10/2020 20:26

Ah I see we just crossed posts. Yes, if you've always struggled with eating, restrict food groups and are underweight, then I think you should talk to your GP about resources available to support you.

I've been in a similar position and was incredibly resistant to seeing it as an issue - after all, we live in a culture that reveres eating 'clean' and being underweight - but it truly isn't good for your body or yourself. My life is not perfect now, but it feels so much better, I have space in my mind and heart for so much more.

MitziK · 25/10/2020 20:26

Instant pot of porridge when you get into work? You can get vegan ones, ones with added fruit and seeds, chocolate flavoured ones, golden syrup flavoured ones and even some plain ones. Boil kettle, open pot, pour in water to the line, cover and eat about five minutes later.

Or you can get ready made pots of yoghurt bircher. They even come with a plastic spoon. Open and eat.

You could buy five and take them into work on the first day, leaving the other ones in the fridge or your desk/locker, so you've always got something there.

I really find food in the mornings difficult (and at lunchtime) despite being a fat bastard, but if I don't eat all day, I get woozy, so I have those on standby.

Teateaandmoretea · 25/10/2020 20:27

@00100001 totally agree. I couldn’t stomach any of that with my morning cuppa personally. As I said each to her own Grin

Thelnebriati · 25/10/2020 20:27

I can't eat breakfast so sometimes have a cup of soup.

gospelsinger You soak porridge oats in the fridge overnight, they're lovely and creamy in the morning.

mynameiscalypso · 25/10/2020 20:30

I agree with PP that you should probably seek some professional help - a lot of the (well meaning) advice on this thread is not at all suitable for someone with disordered eating habits. You're doing a very sensible thing by trying to introduce three meals and three snacks a day - that is the model guidelines for recovery from disordered eating. For what it's worth, I ate yoghurt and muesli almost every day when I was in recovery from my eating disorder.

vizlsapup · 25/10/2020 20:33

30 seconds every day!

Frozen bags of banana, mango, blueberries, scoop of porridge oats, a few extras like yoghurt, nuts, peanut butter, add almond milk and whizz in the blender and drink.

Easy to take on the go. If you have more time exactly the same ingredients can be made into porridge.

When I was commuting I used to make overnight oats and take them with me.

Also, this is terrible chefing BUT two eggs stirred with a fork and microwaved for 1 minute makes a fluffy omelette.
