DS would like PlayStation 4. Any tips on what to buy? Clueless!

Ds, 10, doesn't have a console yet, he plays minecraft on the family laptop.

He'd love a PS4.

We've had advice from a relative to get an XBox series S deal with online games rather than PS4.

Neither of us are gamers....seriously no idea what to buy.

Should we start with the console, two controls and a fifa game which is an Amazon bundle?

He's not into footie - would prefer a racing game or minecraft type.

We have one family tv in the lounge -!!
Any tips gratefully received.

A switch is probably better for that age as it can be played on the TV or handheld. It has more suitable games for children.

There is a new playstation out soon but it's incredibly expensive. Has he given any indication of what games he wants and why he prefers the PS4?

gerbo · 25/10/2020 16:23

I think all his friends have PS4s...they seem to beyond the Switch - he's year six. I feel like this is an investment for his teen years.

He loves minecraft and super are so wanted racing games?

We've genuinely no idea. Friends have said there seems a 50/50 split between Xbox and PlayStation ownership.....

That should say- they seem to be beyond the Switch.

If all his friends have playstations then definitely get him that type of game console but bear in mind a new PlayStation is out next month PS5. Are you wanting him to be able to use a headset and talk to his friends whilst gaming? Fortnite is the one game my son and his friends mostly play.

Bare*

Also, you'll need to pay extra to use PlayStation online which will allow him to join in with playing with friends. It does give free games each month as well.

Make sure it's a PS4 Pro to play 4k games, but that doesn't means you can play 4k discs.

These days there's not much between PS and Xbox, it comes down to personal choice, which one has the exclusive games you like and what your friends use.

Thanks all. Lots to think about...

Anyone have good experiences of buying a 'refurbished' second hand console?

If you are looking for an investment into the teen years (such as playing online with friends) you should consider skipping the PS4 and go to the PS5.

While people will still play PS4 for the next year I imagine, most will migrate to the next generation as that is where the new games will be released. If his friends upgrade their consoles, he wouldn't be able to play online with them if they are going for new games.

Although cost is a massive factor... Plus the fact the PS5 is pretty much impossible to get hold of.

If you don't mind a console you will probably upgrade in a year or two (max), pick up a secondhand console. With the new console coming out a lot of people will be selling theirs off.

Bunnymumy · 25/10/2020 17:11

I bought a wii u second hand from music magpie. Worked good.

Normally I'd say hold off on xbox/ps4 till the teen years but I do think the switch is a bit 'young' for some ten year olds. And if all his friends have a ps4...

Only thing is, as pps said, the new versions are coming out soon. They will cost a fortune for a while though tbh.

I'd go for it. But not with fifa if he doesnt like footy.
I'd see the difference second hand but you might find there isnt much and you'd be better off just buying new.

CatFaceCats · 25/10/2020 17:15

Definitely a PS4 if that’s what he has asked for - completely different to a switch so please don’t get that! I’d got for a refurb PS4 for now - then perhaps he could upgrade to the PS5 for his bday/Xmas next year if he is playing a lot and getting good use of it :)

NoRoomInBed · 25/10/2020 17:23

Just a thought if your so inclined the ps5 is just about to come out does more than a ps4 but it costs almost double.

gamerchick · 25/10/2020 17:28

He's asked for a playstation, why would you then get an Xbox? His friends have playatations so get him what he's asked for. They're totally different machines.

You don't need to bother with the 5, I wait a year or so before upgrading a console and the PS4 will he supported for longer than you think.

Please don't get him a switch, I've no idea why people love the switch so much on here. It's really weird Grin

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 25/10/2020 17:28

The prices for PS4 should drop quite a bit once ps5 comes out. Especially around black Friday. And most ps4 games will be playable on ps5 if he upgrades eventually.

toomuchtoworryabout · 25/10/2020 17:31

The PS5 is due out in a few weeks. PlayStation will gradually fade out the PS4 games so if you are investing in a console for his teen years it will be a waste of money getting a PS4.
The PS5 is a lot more expensive but there is no point in spending money on a PS4 because realistically he won’t be able to get any new games in a year or so.

gamerchick · 25/10/2020 17:42

You don't need to get a 5 (if you can find one) and it's unlikely the price will come down much either. It'll be a main machine roughly for 2 years after the launch of the 5. There are absolutely no plans to retire it.

There's no rush to get the new machine. I never buy a console on launch.

PaddyF0dder · 25/10/2020 17:44

I wouldn’t get the PS4. The PS5 is about to come out. It simply makes sense to buy the new one, rather than one that will be obsolete in a year or two.

gamerchick · 25/10/2020 17:51

Maybe those suggesting the 5 could help the OP find one in that case.

Oblomov20 · 25/10/2020 18:08

It depends. My Ds's all their mates play x box. So that's what we've bought.

But in their football team, the boys who all go to the other local school, all play PS4.

Buy what all his mates play.
And no. I don't think 10 is too young. At all.
