How does your primary aged boy have his hair cut?

DS has fine, straight hair. See pic. Needs cutting today. He always had a ‘straight back and sides’ before lockdown but now he likes it longer. 2 ‘cowlicks’ at the front and a very high hairline doesn’t help. Any suggestions? Thanks

OP why have you let his hair get like this? He looks so unkempt. Poor boy

PracticingPerson · 24/10/2020 09:06

Until about age 9 that was how my youngest looked after a haircut, because I did it myself. Then when he got into sports he just had what I think of as a normal basic short haircut, shaped round his ears and into the nape of the neck. Since lockdown he's gone back to your photo!!

I think he looks lovely, this poster is very rude!
InTheLongGrass · 24/10/2020 09:09

Short back and sides here too.
DS1 went through a phase of having it longer on top, but discovered that meant brushing it, so went back to short hair!
What fabulous hair!

Eh?! Most of the boys in DS's class have hair like that!

Unicorners · 24/10/2020 09:10

I have a girl, but most of the boys where we stay seem to have it short at the back and up the sides with a slightly longer bit on top. It looks quite practical and tidy.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/10/2020 09:11

Mind you I favour a short back and sides "little boy" cut to avoid nits. Don't care if it's tacky.

parrotonmyshoulder · 24/10/2020 09:12

He was in the shower! Unkempt?! Weird comment!
Thanks for the other posts. He wouldn’t like anything that required time or more than 1 second of combing. Probably just send him with DH to the barbers and have his old haircut!

Mine has a number 4 all over. It started when he had nits so we could treat it more easily, now he calls it his 'go faster' haircut. Seems to be the fashion on his school so he's happy. Easy to do at home and low maintenance I'm enjoying it while it lasts and he gets into the phase of wanting it longer

@MB90 why did your parents bring you up to be so vile? You sound like a dick.

Foxinthechickencoop · 24/10/2020 09:17

I think his hair is lovely. I’m showing my age but I don’t like it when little boys have very short hair. I appreciate the bits issue though.
In key stage one I’d say about half the boys had long hair like this, then some short back and sides and a very few with that shaved look.
Then by key stage 2 they seem to have side partings with a floppy fringe and short sides.
By end of primary a mix of very long surfer type hair (about half again), some short back and sides and then again a few ‘trendy‘ styles.

LST · 24/10/2020 09:17

My DS has long hair now. He doesn't want it cut. His brother has had his cut 3 times I think. He has his short (like really short) back and sides

parrotonmyshoulder · 24/10/2020 09:20

I’m surprised they haven’t posted about the manky bit of grout they can see on the tiles behind his (just about to be washed) head!
He’s afraid of the shaver and has been banned from one local barbers for screaming (he was only about 4!). Another memorable haircut was when DSIL thought it would be cute for him to have it cut with the groom and his entourage on the morning of her wedding. You could hear him screaming from the other end of town!

Gorgeous hair. Like his current cut tbh! But I guess it must get in his eyes. DH goes at our two boys with the clippers - we bribe heavily to stay still for the time it takes to get even enough all over. It looks great on DS1 but DS2, whose hair is finer like your son, doesn’t come off well - unless we do super super short (in which case he looks awesome imo) but he doesn’t have the patience for that. But for now the clippers are functional and prevent barbershop visits and barbershop meltdowns. When DS2 is old enough to care I’ll take him for proper cuts again.

nomdeplume2019 · 24/10/2020 09:29

I love the colour of his hair
A good hairdresser will style it right for his face and head shape
I hope he no longer screams

middleager · 24/10/2020 09:32

I like his hair OP. My two always had longer fine hair, but then we just went for short back and sides as it was easier to maintain.

Back to cutting it myself but have just invested in clippers. I like longer hair on males but mine like it short now.

SoupDragon · 24/10/2020 09:32

I've just flicked through the photos on my phone and my DSs had hair not dissimilar to that really. A bit shorter with more shape maybe - I used to take them to the hairdressers and let them choose for themselves. Most of the time they looked like they'd been dragged through a hedge backwards - perfectly acceptable for a primary aged boy.

MrsWhites · 24/10/2020 09:37

What an absolute dick comment! Gender stereotyping at its finest!

OP if your DS likes it longer then I would suggest a hairdresser rather than a barber. For what it’s worth I think his hair is beautiful!

musicalfrog · 24/10/2020 09:42

If he likes it long then just a trim to keep the ends healthy I reckon .

What comment?

Frazzled2207 · 24/10/2020 09:43

I love his hair. My son is 7 and neither me nor him know what to do with it. He has a number 4 back and sides and a bit longer on top- it looks fine and is definitely practical but I’m sure it could look better. Perhaps I need a better barber. He just asks him and me what we want and we haven a clue.

Quisto · 24/10/2020 09:44

My son used to go crazy at the barbers , he whacked some poor lady in the head whilst flailing around. He got over it after a year or so ( and was better with mummy not daddy Grin)This is a number 3 back and sides with length left on top , blended with scissors. He has fine hair too. Deep breath OP, there are child friendly barbers out there.

SimonJT · 24/10/2020 09:52

He hasn’t had it cut yet (Kesh), so its quite long and usually kept in a half plait cloth bun for school.

He has however been asking for it to be cut, I have been stalling and explaining why he hasn’t had his hair cut, but I’ve lost the battle and hes having a hair cut on Monday. My barber is coming to the house to do it, would getting someone come to do your sons make it less stressful for him?
