How does your primary aged boy have his hair cut?

DS has fine, straight hair. See pic. Needs cutting today. He always had a ‘straight back and sides’ before lockdown but now he likes it longer. 2 ‘cowlicks’ at the front and a very high hairline doesn’t help. Any suggestions? Thanks

To be fair to @MB90 I think it varies by area. Where we live it’s cool to have snowboarder, longer hair. In some areas it’s all shaved back and lines shaved into it. They probably think we look ‘scruffy’ Grin

My ds10 has very fine hair & he has a kind of 'swept across fringe' with shorter sides & back. Too short looks awful on him & too long looks scruffy. He's a 'tidy' looking boy.

My youngest ds -8yrs has totally different hair, thick with some curls/waves but is always hot & gets sweaty easily so his is kept fairly short.

ZombieOtter · 24/10/2020 10:13

We've had my eldest's cut very short on the back and sides, slightly longer on top. He has an unerring ability to look scruffy, so any longer and he just looks like an urchin!🙄😭

After teen pressure my ds 6 now has a mun. Omg wish I had done it years ago!!
Hair always looks immaculate and dd does the shaving with the hair clippers!!
And so far no bloody nits!!

yikesanotherbooboo · 24/10/2020 11:26

If he doesn't want the upkeep then 'little boy's cut' . I am a bit militant about young children with long hair , I think they shouldn't have to think about fashion or be tortured with brushing, clips and ties. Clearly if it comes from them it is different but early morning moaning sessions in the kitchen so that the parents can impose a fashionable or in vogue style on their child isn't fair imo.

hypochondriacseveywhere · 24/10/2020 11:27

Short back and sides here.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/10/2020 11:31

Mine has a number one round the back and sides and a bit longer on top. I'm really not keen on long hair on boys, although I'd let DS grow it if he asked but he's not bothered. I can't be bothered faffing with hair, mornings are a rush as it is so the shorter the better.

dannydyerismydad · 24/10/2020 11:32

DS was due a cut just before lockdown. It didn't happen and by the time hairdressers were open again he decided he liked it longer.

He has one of those long elastic bands to keep it out of his eyes.

He's a keen footballer and looks like a mini Beckham in his Real Madrid years.

When he's older I'm sure he'll sport a more sensible look. But right now he's a kid and he's happy to experiment with hair.

Echobelly · 24/10/2020 11:37

DS (9) has a standard short back and sides, varies a bit depending on which barber cuts it (last one did a very short slightly 'footballery' cut with really short back and sides and only slightly longer on top). I like longer hair on boys but think it looks best with thick curly or wavy hair, and DS' hair is fine and dead straight; plus he looks mega-cute with it short and neat, so I tend to keep it that way. He also seems to like it short and complains if he feels it's growing out.

parrotonmyshoulder · 24/10/2020 18:10

Didn’t need to have bothered posting! dH took him to the barbers who misunderstood ‘tidy it up but keep it as a longer style’ and has given him a butchered version of short back and sides with a badly cut fringe. Apparently he got down and ran away so it wasn’t properly finished. Looks awful! But it’ll grow I guess.

Still, doesn’t look ‘unkempt’ at least...!

RosaBaby2 · 24/10/2020 18:14

It didn't look unkempt anyway, what a knob that first poster is!

Fcuk38 · 24/10/2020 18:18

My boy has had no.2 all round back and sides and slightly longer on the top and fringe. It’s quite a good style as it takes a while to look like it’s needs doing again so perfect if he’s not keen on the barbers.

Dmtush · 24/10/2020 18:20

My 9 year old has shoulder length hair, it looks fabulous as it’s very straight and falls beautifully. Frankly he’s genetically predisposed to a lifetime of make pattern baldness so he’s making the most.

SpeedofaSloth · 24/10/2020 18:21

DS has a short back and sides but prefers it to be done with scissors rather than clipper. He looks smart.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/10/2020 18:38

DS (9) drifted into longer hair because I struggle to keep up with the rate it grows at and ASD/ sensory issues make regular cuts a right ballache. Add in mismatching cows licks, awkward crowns, wirey blonde streaks and a knobbly lopsided head and he looks a hell of a lot better with a neat shoulder length bob just above the threshold to have to tie up in school. Short hair just sprouts like a worn out toilet brush, whereas the weight of long hair pulls it down much more neatly and looks like a deliberately cool surfer look (not trendy in my area where boys must have very short hair and like football so that's him as an outsider anyway).

With ASD and sensory issues affecting his clothing choices and interests he's a natural outlier, so we're better playing it as and advantage and being the cool individual, than copying the crowd badly. He rocks it.

Having a son with long hair, who wears shorts in all weather all year and likes fluffy tops (despite pink zips) is an excellent, efficient way at getting intolerant narrow-minded arseholes to self-identify very quickly Wink

PS, we found a hairdresser that has a mini salon at her house that cuts out a lot of the auditory stress. However this year, it's been very easy to give him the occasional trim myself with hairdressing scissors. Much nicer than the Covid Crop that many boys had by May.

ShoesJerry · 24/10/2020 19:00

Too late, I know, but my DS has an awkward cowslick and double crown and I now take him to my hairdresser because all the barbers in town have given him terrible haircuts over the years (he's 11 now). Hairdressers are the way forward!

enjoyingscience · 24/10/2020 19:03

Oh no! It’ll grow back.

Both of mine (6 and 11) have long hair. The little one wants to look like Dave Grohl. Never going to happen, as he’s white blonde, but never mind.

We like the surfer/longer look.

And why the fuck shouldn’t a little boy (or girl for that matter) look a bit unkempt? Good sign they’re enjoying themselves.

ILoveFlumps · 24/10/2020 19:11

Short back and sides here too for DS6. He has thick hair, and a lot of it. We have to have it cut every 4 weeks or so. Started at the hairdressers when he was younger, but they didn’t ‘get’ boys styling and it looked awful. Now go to a Turkish Barbers and they’re spot on.

“OP why have you let his hair get like this? He looks so unkempt. Poor boy”

Poor boy?? Poor you - you sound like the most out of touch judgmental idiot.

HazeyJaneII · 24/10/2020 19:16

Wow! Someone was quick to be a dick!
DeathMetalMum · 24/10/2020 19:21

The boys in Dd's class - year 5 seem to have some sort of curly top and short back and sides. I think they've had perms on the top part only?!

parrotonmyshoulder · 24/10/2020 19:21

The photo I posted was from the middle of proper lockdown. He has had it cut since but was looking the same as that photo as he’d liked it longer. So if he did look ‘unkempt’, that was why! The rest of the photo shows him playing with an entire can of shaving foam before his shower. That day’s idea to get us through the day!

OP posts:
parrotonmyshoulder · 24/10/2020 19:22

Oh God, he’d never sit still for a perm!

HazeyJaneII · 24/10/2020 19:22

I have a feeling ds's hair causes a lot of pursed lips. He has it clippered short all over, it's a rush job due to his additional needs, and he has an unbelievably low hairline at the back, meaning it ends up with a rats tail.
