Ventriloquist dolls - are you bothered by them ? Do you like them ??

I think they're ugly-creepy but fascinating nonetheless. In spite of there being umpteen different dolls they all seem to have the same leery look in common. My sister passionately hates them. I, on the other hand, used to be totally freaked out by shop mannequins or dummies, especially the female ones in BHS decades ago. Thankfully that sort of dummy is quite rare now but I used to have nightmares about them ☹. And I wasn't even born when the Autons smashed their way out of a shop window in Dr. Who!

Total freak out nightmares for weeks

delilabell · 23/10/2020 21:25

Hideous

Last night I had a weird dream involving a distant relative who dipped in and out of our family life. He looked like a cross between Paul O'Grady and Lord Charles!

I emphasise that odd leery expression. I don't know if it's the shifty eyes or oversize bottom lip.

We have one, not creepy at all. My youngest wants to learn ventriloquism so we bought a classic 1970s dummy for her.

Watching the film Dead of night put me off those dolls forever

Oldraver · 23/10/2020 22:59

They creep me out. Along with clowns, those seaside machines with 'heads' or dancing whatever in them.

I'm also not keen on mascots or people dressed as animals etc. They always head straight for me

OrtamLeevz · 23/10/2020 23:01

Some of them are all right, and I always liked Lord Charles. But I was rather put off by the film 'Magic' with Anthony Hopkins. I really wish I'd never watched that!

Clowns give me the creeps too.

caringcarer · 23/10/2020 23:26

I have never liked them. I hate their eyes.

kursaalflyer · 23/10/2020 23:28

I bought a vintage one for dd about 20 years ago as she wanted to learn ventriloquism. After a few weeks I asked her how she was getting on and she told me the doll scared her so much she'd hidden it in the bottom of the wardrobe! Over the years it's become a bigger thing than it should because no one will go in there and clear the wardrobe out. We're all scared of it! Grin

kursaalflyer · 23/10/2020 23:31

Shudder

BogRollBOGOF · 23/10/2020 23:47

Not a fan. My issues with human faces and expressions were not significantly problematic until 2020 Grin

I also hate people like John Redwood whose faces don't move properly with speech and expressions.
Also not a Botox/ fillers fan!

Dolls creep the bejesus out of me and always have done. The ventriloquist dummy in charge of Brexit preparations is particularly chilling.

Fats was the name of the doll in Magic. If you can bear to look at it closely enough, you'll see that its face is modelled on that of Anthony Hopkins, circa 1978.

Hell no they are freaky and devil like and should all be burned

If they're made of suitable plastic, they should be recycled rather than burned. Just imagine a green bin full of ventriloquist dollsWink.

I grew up in the days of Orville and Emu so don't mind the cute ventriloquist dolls but not so into the creepy ones that are supposed resemble people

WitchesSpelleas · 24/10/2020 11:39

I used to love Orville as a child.

Lemonpizza · 24/10/2020 11:39

Basil Brush was simply annoying as fuck. I was hairdresser as a child by Punch and Judy. Not sure if these count as actual ventriloquist though? Maybe not

Lemonpizza · 24/10/2020 11:40

Scared not hairdresser

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 24/10/2020 11:40

I found Slappy in Goosebumps scary the film is scary has clowns in to (but very entertaining)

The film Magic with Anthony Hopkins is disturbing

Yes I fear them I know what they are capable of

willowmelangell · 24/10/2020 11:42

Bleugh, horrid things. I blame Ken Dodd and his Diddy Men on my reaction to doll/dummy/puppet type things.
So creepy.
