My (old) tv sporadically switches itself on and off

It’s not a smart tv and, no, it’s not switching itself on / off at a set time each day, or on sleep.

Is there a quick fix or is it time to get a new tv (it was purchased back in 2008)?

This is not a ‘woo’ thread!

Time to buy a new tv.

It's a poltergeist fire waiting to happen. Just get a new TV already.

BertieBotts · 23/10/2020 07:29

Sounds like a dry connection and yes, probably a fire risk. A connection somewhere in the TV has worked loose so it will be sparking to make the connection.

If you're handy with a soldering iron you could probably have a look and fix it.

Ours did this. First time we upgraded the software somehow (it is a smart TV) and second time we got a new cable. If it starts doing it again we will get a new one.

To be fair a TV from 2008 has lasted OK! Time for a new one.

Maybe your neighbours have a random light switch and they keep pressing it to work out what it does 😁

Sounds like it's time to buy a new one, sorry OP.

Thanks, all - I suspect you may be right. I will unplug

I had one that used to turn itself off. Much older than yours.
I used to bang the top of it to get it to come on again.

This is a woo thread! My tv randomly started that too - literally last weekend. I can't remember when I bought it, probably after 2005 and before 2009!!!!!!!

I a, unplugging at night and experimenting with removing remote out of living room and using an alternative remote

TVs really aren't built to last 12 years. Get a new one
