Because after spending so long fannying boringly about with 'the one ring to rule them all' or whatever it's called, he couldn't stand the thought of wearing a wedding ring.

I used to know a silversmith who at one point, around the times the LOTR films were being released, was always being asked to make replicas of the One Ring to use as wedding rings. I mean, surely no one, even if they only saw bits of the films and skipped the novels, could think that having an inherently evil, all-consuming ring of power to be married with was anything other than fairly ominous..?
