Particularly liked this but am disturbed as fuck:

Just to disturb you further, screen grab of the current most recently posted in Archive of Our Own "Hobbit: All media types." You ain't seen nothing yet Wink. (User names inked out to protect the innocent ).

Where is the "bwa ha ha" emoji?

(Sam and Frodo I always read as platonic, but Legolas and Gimli in the books? I mean, there's comradely affection, then there's defying the gods and building a boat to take your beloved to the forbidden realm with you... I know Tolkien wouldn't have overtly written it that way given his religious beliefs, but man, that's some Freudian subtext going on there.)

Incidentally, always fancied Ian Holm, despite being 40+ years his junior. RIP.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/10/2020 20:33

PS never, ever fancied Martin Freeman.......

HotPenguin · 20/10/2020 20:38

Wasn't he considered a bit Tookish? The other hobbits were wary of his strange ways.

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 20/10/2020 20:47

The other hobbits thought he was a bit odd didn’t they? It’s interesting to wonder if Tolkien didn’t unconsciously write him as a gay character. There certainly was a type of oxbridge professor who was probably gay, unmarried, a little odd and out of step with modern (for the time) society. Ghost story writer MR James was one of those. Tolkien could well have based bilbo, especially the older Bilbo, loosely on this type of man. He would certainly have known a few.

gurteee · 20/10/2020 20:51

He was a free spirit with a thirst for adventure.

Youandmealwaysandforever · 20/10/2020 20:53

He preferred food to sex CakeGrin

Sceptre86 · 20/10/2020 20:59

I always imagined that the other hobbies thought him odd. I also thought he was meant to be with Thorin but couldn't trust him around the ring so accepted that he would just love him from afar.

Kiwi is the one who questions Taurriel about searching his trousers as he 'Could have anything hidden there' She just looks at and replies 'or nothing' and walks away

WeddingGrump · 20/10/2020 21:14

Both Bilbo and Frodo were on their way to becoming Gollum, weren't they? I thought that was the 'in text' answer, and example of what would happen. Anyone who owns the ring becomes obsessed with it. It becomes their precious and they have no interest in any other relationship.

Wishingforanotherlife · 20/10/2020 21:16

I think it was because he was a bit odd, according to other hobbits anyway. He was different and I think probably based on a bookish, gay professor type who couldn't really do much about it at the time so went off on fabulous adventures instead. Retired to live with the elves because they were woke and right on and tolerated homosexuality.

But The Hobbit films are so disappointing - why did they have to mess with a perfectly good book and stretch it into three films (and I've yet to see the last one because I just about died of boredom watching the first two). I too watched the entire LOTR during lockdown and it's all deep meaningful stares at one another or into the distance. I am so glad I read the books before the films and have experiences the utter joy of being lost in them with my imagination running riot. I was about 18 when I read them and finished them in a fortnight of reading whenever I could - train to work, tea breaks, into the wee small hours in bed. I remember with The Return of the King, being about half way through and thinking 'oh great, I've still got all these pages left to read' when it finished and the rest was appendices. Boy did I feel let down.

daisychain1620 · 20/10/2020 21:22

I think it's because he was too focused on traveling and adventures to settle down.
I adore The Hobbit and LOTR, still have my childhood battered books
