HELP!!! re Carers Allowance

52andblue · 20/10/2020 17:13

My ds gets DLA at a medium care rate and I claim Carers allowance.
It is due to end as he is now 16 and I'd have to apply for PIP.
This can take 4-6 months.
If he does not get awarded PIP then my Carers allowance will stop.
BUT.... my Daughter also gets DLA at the qualifying level for Carers (she actually gets the care at the high rate)
Would my Carers Award stop or could I transfer it to her (it was attached to his DLA as his was awarded first)

I don't know the answer, but the CAB should be able to help:

Yes your claim for ds would end and you would need to make a new claim as a carer for dd. Good luck with your PIP claim hopefully you won't need to make a new claim.

Wouldn't the new claim for dd just be automatic?
If she gets DLA at a qualifying level ?
You can only claim Carers for one child even if you have 10 that qualify. But if you have 2 and 1 stops why wouldn't it automatically move to the child who still qualifies (esp if at a higher level)?
I can't cope with this...

No it isn't automatic, you'd have to make a new application for dd.

EmbarrassedUser · 20/10/2020 17:35

The claims aren’t transferable.

hiredandsqueak · 20/10/2020 17:37

No it's not automatic you would need to make a new claim.

52andblue · 20/10/2020 17:49

But is it TECHNICALLY only a new claim ie paperwork wise but would be guaranteed to be granted for Dd as she qualifies ?

Yes if your circumstances are the same and your dd receives middle rate care or above then you would qualify for carers. You would claim from the day your son's claim ended so in effect you wouldn't lose any money.

ahhhhhh

that sounds less scary....

thank you @hiredandsqueak xxx

Yes, start a new claim for your DD when your claim for your DS ends. You can do it online and they will backdate it up to 3 months so even if it takes a bit for the award to be made you should not miss out financially.

MinnieJackson · 20/10/2020 18:22

You can make a new claim for your daughter and it will be backdated three months since your application

52andblue · 20/10/2020 18:27

Ah! @Bythepath

So, Ds' claim to DLA is ending.
I have to apply for PIP by 27th of this month (aargh)
they keep paying it whilst they decide re PIP (I think?)
So should I apply for Carers' for Dd NOW please???

If he is still getting the DLA, and you have just been told to apply in advance of the award ending then I would stay on CA for him for now. I would focus on getting the PIP claim started before the deadline. If he has stopped getting DLA and will be without any benefit while he applies for PIP I would apply for CA using your DD's DLA as the qualifying benefit.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, THAT IS VERY HELPFUL XXX
