WW2 dress up

DS has WW2 day at school tomorrow and is supposed to dress up.

Though there's stuff on Amazon Prime with same-day delivery, I don't want to buy a costume just for this. We've already paid £7 for the day to go ahead. And I hate the waste and consumerism of buying fake costumes for things like this.

Any ideas how I could create any kind of WW2 costume out of mix-and-match accessories that are likely to be found somewhere in our house?

He doesn't own a vest of any kind, and in terms of trousers, has school trousers, jeans, and joggers...

Do you have a hand knitted jumper, or if not, can you get to a charity shop to see if you can find one? He could be an evacuee - jumper, school trousers, school shoes and socks.

Print an evacuee label off the internet and pin to the front of the jumper.

Cover a small cardboard box with brown paper and print a gas mask label from the internet. Use string for a strap to put over his shoulder.

We did this for DD1 some years ago and she looked surprisingly good!

Get some cardboard and make a cardboard gas mask box bag and a cardboard label for him like an evacuee.

Wear school trousers and a shirt and jumper.

Wet, gel and part hair to the side.

Oh god I hate this kind of thing ,have you got a box you could put round his neck for gas mask, any shorts ,long socks or old school trousers you don't mind cutting down? My son's school once decided to have a sixties day to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school with a couple of days notice Hmm

Thinking back to when mine were doing this, they wore shorts and long socks and school shoes, a checked shirt (charity shop) with a v neck sweater and no tie.

Could you make a gas mask box out of cardboard and string for the strap?

If he has any long shorts in a boring colour (brown/grey/black) wear them (or cut down a worn out pair of school trousers).
Long knee high socks (maybe from your DH pulled up)

Make a gas mask box from a cardboard box (persil tablets?) and wrap in brown paper, string round it.

Luggage label with his name on it.

My ds has got this next month. I refuse to buy anything as it never gets worn again and is such a waste. He is going to wear grey school shorts, grey socks and black school shoes, shirt and tie, then some sort of dark jumper and a flat cap!

brilliotic · 20/10/2020 10:23

Ooookay, I think I can work with this!

  • Old worn out school trousers, cut off to make shorts (his regular shorts are bright red)
-DP's Welly Socks
  • Cardboard box gas mask box, evacuee label
  • Trip to charity shops to find either checked shirt or knitted jumper

Thanks! He wanted to be a soldier but that definitely would have required me buying a costume.
