Nutella sandwich
Bar of dairy milk
Pot of joy
2 custard creams
Cheese string.

Dd asked me if she could have a big chocolate bar in her lunch box. I said no so she declared that Chloe gets all of the above.

I didn't believe her at first but when dd said at the school gates ' my mum doesn't believe you get a whole chocolate bar for lunch'
Chloe nodded and showed me the contents. Her mum stood smiling and nodding and I felt embarrassed.

I didn't really know what to say so just laughed and said goodbye to dd then walked off.

Would you feed your dc that?

i would just tell my daughter if her mummy wants to feed her to much sugar thats their house but in our house we eat normal food.I only feed chocolate once a week on Friday's with the sandwich and fruit

6PeopleInAPubSafeHomeUnsafe · 19/10/2020 08:16

It depends. If the child is SEN and that's all they'll eat sod it. Better fed than not.

NT child who will eat other food, bit odd. It's an expensive box of sugar. But overall not my circus not my monkeys.

WanderingMilly · 19/10/2020 08:16

Well, it's unhealthy and yes, I agree that people have no idea what constitutes a healthy lunch these days.

On the other hand, presumably the child liked her lunch and ate it. What's more, I absolutely hate all the "lunch box police" thing even when it's schools doing it, and even more so when it's other parents. So really, not your business....

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/10/2020 08:17

@midnightstar66

Also remember that when you are relying on food banks there is chocolate spread and custard creams aplenty but little in the way of pepper sticks and fruit
What about the chocolate yoghurt though? It’s a pot of joy, Cadbury’s and very expensive. So for me this isn’t a food bank issue.

My dd is in secondary now. She would have loved this but no way would I have allowed her to take sugar plus more sugar. Or the Nutella.

I would report the lunch because of the sandwich. It is possible to buy nut free chocolate spread.

Please do not say this unless you want dd repeating it to chloe and chloe telling mum 🙄

Sirzy · 19/10/2020 08:18

I would wonder if there is a bigger dietary related issue going on here which your not privy to.

I have seen some odd lunch box combinations for children with additional needs when it’s what’s needed to get them eating. Ds only takes an apple and a packet of crisps because he won’t eat anything else at lunchtime

clpsmum · 19/10/2020 08:19

Why is it your business???

pastandpresent · 19/10/2020 08:20

This is a joke, right? Your school is nut free school and you know that yet send in Nuttella. Some children have big chocolate bar for lunch, when healthy eating is promoted in most schools.

MagpieSong · 19/10/2020 08:21

When I was a child, most people got a sandwich, crisps, chocolate and maybe a piece of fruit or cucumber. I got crisps on some Fridays, but the rest if the time healthy lunches. That lunch would have been more usual then. Most people had disco crisps and pop chocolate bars with pop stars on or a Kit Kat. I’d have had pasta salad or a healthy sandwich, fruit and sometimes a cereal bar (low sugar).

Now I tend to see healthy lunches and schools don’t allow unhealthy stuff in my area, I’d never feed dc super unhealthy stuff at lunch time, but a homemade cake with veg in would be fine as a pan occasional thing. Usually it’s a couple of items from a list similar to this: a sandwich, couscous salad, pasta salad, fruit, breadsticks and cream cheese, cheese, veg, Pita bread, Falafel, hummus and crudités etc. I do add a note to the lunchbox or make food like a rocket wrap, a ‘monster face’ sandwich etc. It’s all healthy, but they think it’s fun!

Cuppaand2biscuits · 19/10/2020 08:22

I work in school at lunchtime and I can assure you there is absolutely no time at all for checking the contents of children's lunch boxes. Especially now we are managing all the staggered times due to covid and bubbles.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 19/10/2020 08:23

A pot of joy is a wonderful thing - but the layers of joy are even better!! They are by Cadbury's to the pp that asked- found with the yogurts and individual desserts

CoronaBollox · 19/10/2020 08:24

I could do with a pot of joy right about now. Also I could not give a shiny shit what other people put in their kids lunchbox.

It is a crap lunch, yes. But if that is all she will eat, it’s better than her going hungry.

Thismummyruns · 19/10/2020 08:27

Our school recently reminded us about snack boxes and what is expected.

They'd have a field day with that lunchbox.

jakor · 19/10/2020 08:27

This lunchbox judging is completely barmy

Agree & whilst it's not what I would chose the sole purpose of this thread is too judge.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/10/2020 08:28

Ds only takes an apple and a packet of crisps because he won’t eat anything else at lunchtime.

I used to send DD in with a healthy lunchbox and she would eat only one item like a Babybel (on the school watch!). She would end up eating the rest of it en route home (and usually be in a foul mood coming out of school because she was so hungry). Once I decided not to send her in with a sandwich (as it would be nicer to give her a fresh one at home-time than one that had been in her lunchbox, uneaten, for a good seven to eight hours) - and the only time I didn't put one in, I got a letter from school suggesting that I wasn't feeding her adequately. Needless to say I was fuming.

There are probably more children out there who won't eat a healthy lunch than one might believe? Is it more important that a child eats enough or refuses to eat the right type of food?

Pinkyxx · 19/10/2020 08:28

I wouldn't give my child a lunchbox with those contents myself. That said, I know it's a pretty common approach from what my daughter said when in primary school. DD thought it was very unfair Grin The school may have a policy about what should go in but they aren't going to police lunch boxes...

Surprised about the nut spread as I thought most schools were nut free and I feel sorry for any child fed by that way but otherwise none of my business what others feed their children.

Sargass0 · 19/10/2020 08:30

Poor kid. Custard creams are rank.

jessstan1 · 19/10/2020 08:30

What is a pot of Joy?

Nutella is unhealthy, I can't imagine how anyone would have that for lunch - maybe on toast for breakfast if you like chocolate and nuts. I think lunch sandwich filling should mainly be savoury and she did have a bar of chocolate so didn't need it with her bread too.

However if that is all a child will eat in a packed lunch, it's better than starving.

People are flipping nosy about packed lunches these days.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 19/10/2020 08:31

I've seen far worse in primary schools.

Yesterdays chips in congealed gravy.
Can of coke/energy drink.

Slice of toast with thick layer of margarine and sugar. No drink.

Cold McDonald's Happymeal is also popular.

HelloDulling · 19/10/2020 08:32

@Sargass0

They really are. Stale the day you buy them.
Pollynextdoor · 19/10/2020 08:32

Nutella is yummy. I often have it for lunch😋😋

ImSleepingBeauty · 19/10/2020 08:33

I would report the Nutella in a heart beat.

The rest I’d leave up to the school to address if they felt it was necessary.

For context I think my DC’s lunch is not very healthy but she eats it and I’m more concerned about her eating and not being hungry then whether it’s healthy but sits untouched all day.

Indoctro · 19/10/2020 08:40

I grew up on jammy pieces and cans of coke

Age 40 , no fillings no health conditions.

Didn't do me any harm Wink
